I think that we take a lot of things for granted. This is the same guy who texted me four times, claiming that his email was broken. (a space between his moniker and @gmail.com)

When people go to ask jeeves, they feel like all they need to do is ask a question. (Literally). I think that by telling someone to google something, they think that there's more to it than there is.

I've demonstrated the awesome power of google to him. For whatever reason, he just doesn't feel confident using it. (hell, he has a hard time finding the intergrated search bar in Firefox).

The point is, he prefers to ask a seach engine a question in plain english. Google works fine for that, but in his mind, he's "supposed" to ask jeeves in plain english.

There's examples abound of things that aren't the best, but they "just work" for people. There's no major difference in using Firefox instead of IE, but people still use IE, despite the fact that it's inferior. It works for them.

  4. Great For Noobs... on Ask Jeeves Bought for $2 billion · · Score: 2, Insightful
My best friend just bought a PC. He has difficulty with computers in general (we're still working on importing songs to iTunes).

I continously tell him to "google" something when he has a question, but his seach engine skills need work. Yesterday his female roommate told him to "ask jeeves"...(what is baklava?). For whatever reason, Jeeves worked out for him, and he proceeded to get himself answers to all the questions he's had in a while.

I think because it encourages the user to literally ask a question, noobs feel more confident that they'll get the results they want. For them,it's easier to ask jeeves "What is baklava?" than to google "baklava definion".

Have you considered alternate methods of sale? For example, selling time to advertisers so that their ads can play while the album is downloaded for free? You could target demographics by the style of music/artist. I imagine that ads that could be viewed when the new 50Cent became available would have been a hot property.

You do realize that whatever price point you settle on, people are going to continue to pirate unless it's free?

I worked in a plasics factory for about five years before I got my current desk job. I had to use an inpact tool to seperate halves of molds (think the deals they use to remove wheels from racecars in the pits). I worked 48+hrs a week, and it tore my wrist up pretty good. A lot of vibration and repetitive motion. Using a mouse for more than an hour or two results in extreme pain and numbness. My "condition" wasn't caused from computing, but it definitely makes it harder for me to use computers now. I prefer to use my notebook for my "fun computing" because the touchpad requires less movement and only one finger. I don't know how many people's discomfort was caused by computing, but this could be a godsend for those of us with otherwise balky body parts.

Actually, DM did take an "X-Ecutioners" style approach to the album. I can't discern which songs from the White Album comprised the beats, aside from the mash-up of "What More Can I Say?". Admittedly, I'm not much of a Beatles/Rock fan, but I did buy the White Album to compare to DM's creation. Perhaps a hard-core Beatles fan would recognize the samples? Besides, this is a Wired award, not a Grammy. I think that the distribution method had more to do with the award than the album's artistic merit.

I realize that a lot of /.ers are not big fans of hip-hop. Still, JayZ/Rocafella never tried to stop DM from distributing the album (to my knowlege). It's a common practice for major-label hip-hop artists to release mixtapes and other free content to their fans. 50Cent made his name from mixtapes, and many others have realized that these free albums are great marketing tools. Yes, a lot of people here hate hip-hop, but they've got to respect the copyright holder's generosity...and the fact that they encourage some of their works to be freely distributed.

  12. Re:Flow... on What Makes a Good UI? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I agree wholeheartedly. Another thing to keep in mind is how you require users to enter data. My job has a proprietary database, and I can't select certain fields without clicking them with the mouse. I can't tab over and (arrow+down) through the choices on the lists. It's endlessly irritating to have the ability to type somewhat quickly, and continously have to remove your hands from the keyboard, grab the mouse, point, click down, click down, select. Frankly, it takes me right out of the "groove" I get myself in. So yes, the "flow" of the UI is most important.

  13. Re:Good idea on Accessories for Mac mini · · Score: 3, Interesting

Well, I bought myself an iPod for Christmas, and I've gottnen used to it "just working". I wonder how much of a better computing experience I can get with a mac, and have tried our grapic design dept's G5 to surf /. while they're at lunch...I think the real draw is knowing that all of your apps can work as well as iTunes. I've looked at getting a mini, but I think that for the money, I might be able to get something like a G3 tower on eBay for around $300. I'm more interested in a tower-style system since there'd be more room for larger drives. I've got too much music (200+GB) to be accomodated in a mini, and this would be an even lower-cost solution. The high quality of my iPod makes me comfortable purchasing a used mac. And no, an iPod on window isn't as easy to use as a mac. I've had i/o errors trying to connect my iPod, and few of my friends pcs have firewire ports, and if they do, they're the four pin connectors. I'm guessing that a mac would be much more accomodating to my ipod.

My best friend and I tried a Ubuntu install on both of our machines a few days ago. I tried the live cd on my notebook to no avail, (admittedly, it could be the crappy CDROM drive) and my friend tried to put a clean install on his AMD64 desktop. The install seemed to go ok, but it would start up the first time, and die before the desktop was finsihed loading. We thought that perhaps it didn't like one of his periphials(not his CDROM-Sony DRU14A), so we connected a standard keyboard and mouse. It still hung up. More than anything, I was really disappionted. It did look great, but it would be a lot cooler if it worked out of the package.

It's amazing how much dishonesty people will admit to their friends and family when they think they're on hold. Often, if I'm suspicious, I'll put someone on "hold" and then listen. Usually, they'll say something like "I think he's going to go for it!" or "yeah, found it in the garbage, but they're going to replace it". All I really want is to play in a "2k" world. I found that for all the improvements to Vice City, the fact that is was 80's themed really kind of ruined the experience. I know that they're doing the time period thing to make it less realisic (probly in effort to make it less offensive), but I liked the idea of GTA3 where it felt like I could just go on a kill-crazy rampage at the University there wasn't anything "funny" about it. I grew up in the 80's and hated the music then, hearing it years later just made me remember my proclivity for neon clothes during the time. I don't care about the guns, cars, physics as much-I just want a more serious theme.

I'd reccomend Tiger Woods 2004. I got my gf to try it this weekend, and we found that her brother and his wife play also. It's a great game on its own, ideal for newbies in general. There's no time limit, so they can take their time and not feel hurried. This way they can learn the controls, and they only need to concentrate on their turn. My gf is already talking trash about our showdown next weekend.

I don't think age has too much to do with an intrest in gaming. I'm only 25, but have enjoyed gaming over my entire life, as has my best friend who is 27. Most interesting, however, is my dad, who is 55. He's been playing games for as long as I can remember, and shows no signs of slowing down. I got him Socom2 for Xmas, and he was playing before the remaining presents were even opened. He only plays "realistic" games, and I've found my tastes going the same way as I get older. I'd reccomend something from the exemplary EA Sports franchise. They're realisic, and can make you a fan of a sport you were't interested in before you played the game. The replay value is a 10, since you can never really "beat" the game. Try Tiger Woods 2004... I have no intrest in golf, but it's truly spectatcular. The PS2 has the most adult-oreinted games. Find some time to rent a few, and be sure to give other genres a chance. If you're into games enough to read /.'s game section, there's something out there for you.
