  1. Re:You're asking who? on Ask Slashdot: Unity/Gnome 3/Win8/iOS — Do We Really Hate All New GUIs? · · Score: 1

I have to admit having the fundamental change that Unity brought was bringing the GUI directly to the hardware. While X servers are good and useful not everyone needs or even wants it and if the results are improved performance then why not at least give the chance? The problem is why is an alternative OS being held back so much simply because of it's UI? The OSS community is about letting the software evolve at what ever pace it wants but major WMs are all firmly based around systems that have never evolved period. There has to be some sort of commenting system where you can comment on the UI from inside the UI and contribute that to the community for analysis included with context of the comment as through as the user allows, i.e Time,Kernel,Software,HardSpecs, etc. This will really help the progress of the evolution and also make it almost impossible for entrenched OS vendors to compete with not only new GUI models but as well popular GUI models, they will just spring up so fast and catch like wildfire.

People just 'try' Linux derived GUIs right now probably have a bunch of ideas, have no way of communicating them, give up and pop the CD/USB_HDD out of the drive. If you were able to make annotations from inside the GUI/WM and send it off with recommendations and requests with no sign in required there would be a much more substantial gain in propagation IMHO.

Maybe if you are used to setting up development systems but as far as enterprise they are all different machines. You might have both an IIS server as well as an Apache server feeding off of a common database, you don't want a fault in one client to take down more than one system and the list goes on. If you only plan to have 3 clients you might not want to hire a specialist but for such a small VM but as long as you are taking nightly snapshots there is not too much that can go wrong that you can't fix with a basic knowledge of your hosting VM, maybe it's worth sending out your Sys Op out for a training session? It might not be right for every business but it does have it's purpose.

Your argument makes no sense as VI and Emacs also had 1.0 release. VI 1.0 will never evolve or mature on its own since it is a static entity. For anything to mature it would have to be changed which also affects its version number. So the current version of Windows would be significantly more mature than Windows 1.0 and Windows 1.0 was much more mature than it predecessors.

Then it is quite obvious you have never installed a fresh copy of Windows for that type of hardware. You aren't going to get far installing Vista / 7 on a PIII class system with 256MB RAM. XP can be toned down and use around 50MB at idle. XP takes a while to install and comes with very few drivers on the install disk compared to Vista/7 so most if not all of your drivers have to be installed manually via the manufacturers respective websites. Now even that is starting to get tricky because if you have one of those cheap Chinese NICs or WIFI the site is likely hocking cheap Viagra by now. Slipstreaming an install CD might be an option

But as far as "install the latest Microsoft Windows on it", well ya you probably could "install it" but would you want to work on that machine 8 hours a day every day? Not likely. A custom Debian image could be made easily and launched via TFTP that would give a basic WM and your apps for everyday. Having one central image makes it easier to checksum the files on remotes in case of a compromising attack while also providing alternate "clean room" images when doing diagnostics. 12 hours max notice of infections, central control, easily deployable and packages can be deployed locally at high speeds.

We do have to remember they are upgrading 'en masse' computers that were likely bought in bulk to begin with. I wouldn't be mean and make them use a Win7 install on a PIII or anything without a GB of RAM.

This looks like either economic or political suicide all balanced on the idea that the people will react the way the ISP/Politicians will want them to just by cutting a few off. Does this sound risky to anyone else? Makes no sense to me since most people can't even tell in many cases that they apparently are infringing. On top of that how long till a couple of board script kiddies start injecting this material into connections effectively shutting down a nations internet all at once?

Sure most people here will cringe when someone clicks on web game links because of how slow it will run or the ability to spread malware but we also know most of the millions will do it just the same.

What would really be cool is more easily attainable gaming. Hey most people will download virus laden software just in the hopes of being entertained for an afternoon how are we all supposed to hate on something that could eventually pan out for developers who wish to add 3D features to their websites?

Most IGPs today are capable of much more than they actually do on a daily basis, it might even be possible that if this catches on the GPU manufacturers will offer more hardware VM features that allows the OS to manage states more efficiently.

The cable companies will save boat loads of money since they no longer have to hire expensive sales staff and negotiators to watch out for the lowly consumer as well as their bottom line. Even if they charge slightly more for a unlimited 20Mb/s connection I could then easily get a VOIP account plus TV channels for far less than paying each one separately. Since it apparently costs these providers so much to maintain this infrastructure as evident from my $10+ monthly 'system access' charges for each service both of us should be happier at the end of the day.

From a 1984 perspective which was prevalent with Turing's time of WWII, AI was a scary and unexplored and the Turing Test is a large step forward to . I do believe script-able interactions will be something that is valuable for those that can afford to implement it but even rudimentary scripts would be able to fool the AI since it is only basing success on fooling you and not you fooling it. Most business would just have an AI system to operate with the other Turing Complete systems and it would just become an API based on the language it is written for. Most of this is a reflection of nature its self where something gets broken down into it's fundamental parts we are just an extension of this. We some how believe looking from the outside in that we are exempt of this but it is the furthest from the truth.
