Waving a mobile phone around isn't much of a test, wouldn't you agree? Every single electronic device available past and present would need to be waived around and a full analysis of the effects on the flight equipment would need to be completed. The task is a little more daunting than you let on to believe.

I donated my '84 Fiero with 378K miles on it. I had to replace the timing gears and cam at 210K but that was the majority of the work done (I don't want to talk about the headlight motors). I saw it driving down the road rattling like usual a few months later in a nearby town. I currently have an 87' Fiero with 295K miles and all it really needs right now is a transmission rebuild and another clutch. I also had a Nissan truck/SUV thing (Pathfinder, I think) for a few months that had 310K on it and ran great when I gave it to my brother.

It isn't abnormal for a car to run for 250-350K miles nowadays, or older days. Those Fieros were made 20 years ago and weren't exactly the height of technology. I'm looking forward to registering the 87 GT as a classic next year.

I meant you could plug the UPS into your power strip/switch and then the computer into the UPS. That way when you flip the switch on the power strip the UPS thinks the power is out and signals the PC to shutdown. It wouldn't have to be an expensive one, just big enough to keep the computer running while it completes shutdown. If you set the shutdown timer for more than a few seconds of no power you will still get the benefit of the UPS in those short power outages and brownouts.

I guess the determining factor to your question is how much power does the UPS use for it's monitoring and charging circuits when idle. If it is only a watt or two then I would consider it negligible compared to the amount of power you are saving by actually turning the machine off. 99% of the benefit (reduced power consumption), a UPS for quick power outages, and the added convenience of not manually shutting the machine down.

With a well defined interface it is no different than using a linked lib other than latency. I have taken part in more than a few multi-tier apps where there is a single function that actually does all the grunt work of moving data back and forth.

Using a powerful server to do most of the heavy lifting and using the client to merely render the output is a great way to produce a useful multiplatform application. I admit that HTML has a lot of shortcommings in the UI, but that isn't the fault of the data transfer mechanism.

When you downshift an automatic transmission it clearly increases the rotational speed of the engine. Many automatic cars now downshift, when the brake is applied and the throttle position sensor is at zero, for engine braking. I'm sure the detection of when to downshift is more complicated, but it gets to the point that a TC can perform work on the crankshaft. For even more efficiency the torque converter clutch can be engaged. This makes the torque converter little more than a large flywheel.
