I wonder what will happen when they clone someones pet (a cat maybe?), and although their cat looks the same, it has a completely different personality. A personality in fact that the owner doesn't like.
HEY! What about the Naked News thing they did in russia. That was pretty good wasn't it? Now they just have to make all the russian shows naked and with pretty people. (actually it would still be worth watching if they are fugly just for the humor value)
""Gimp was not written as a competitor to Photoshop." -mac[LAG]"
I don't suppose someone in the opensource community would consider creating a competitor to Photoshop (if GIMP isn't)?!? I want an opensource alternative to Photoshop dammit!!! If anything, I want an opensource program to go one up on Photoshop.
*sigh* I find it odd that the GIMP group doesn't want to compete or beat Photoshop. It seems most of the other open software groups DESIRE to replace or give alternative to their closed breatheren. Usually due to the desire to have MORE options and productivity, not less. The only big area in the open/linux group that hasn't competed is with Macromedia Dreamweaver (In various linux forums it was revealed a larger group of linux users just port over Dreamweaver and ignore any of the lesser options).
?Why doesn't GIMP want to reach for the stars as well?
Don't you mean GOOD EATS! *CHUCKLE* I wonder what AB could send up there in a tube?!? Hmmm, maybe I should send that in as a show idea...
I agree, they should make a few for civilian (NASA) use. Especially for restocking the ISS. Although I LOVE the name of this. Some one should run out and create a Heavy Alternative Band called DELTA 4 HEAVY!:p
I must say that I wish the windows version of the GIMP would change the save dialog box to the standard save box for windows. Its annoying to deal with that save box in windows. In linux it would probably rock, but...

Heck, I think they would be doing good to redo the menus.
Ive used the GIMP a few times and have done some cool stuff, but still I spent a couple of hours to find the basic function to draw a box, circle and an elipse. These are basic things in photoshop, paint, and every other program graphic program. I never did find them......not sure if it even has them. To me that is not a friendly or intuitive UI. On the other hand I was able to modify and combine two different photos to get a cool look, plus I was also able to create a watercolory image with half of the crap taken out (fixed), so I know GIMP has some power.
I don't think people want a Photoshop "Clone", but they want the GIMP to meet or preferably beat PS on everything it does. They want to be able to leave PS and not feel like they left their productivity behind. Or at least GIMP in combo with some other open source program.
When reading through this discussion you keep hearing people say, "oh it wont do this or that" and every person has something different to say. That is not a good sign, because it indicates that there is a lot of productivity left behind (and no other open source program to fill in, otherwise people would say "Gimp wouldn't do this, but I use X program in combo with GIMP and everything is fine"). Like someone said earlier "The GIMP team should sit down with the professional PS users who have tried the GIMP and write down everything they said about what GIMP needs to meet or beat PS".
As for the UI, we want a more friendly UI. HEY, I think it would be awesome for the UI to look nothing like the UI of PS. I just want it to be much more intuitive and smooth. It seems that the UI is a low priority for development by the GIMP team. Ive seen what opensource, or near open source (Opera is example. Not sure if opensource) can do when they want to. Ususally they can go one up on the industry leader if not be revolutionary on how they do things.
P.S. I have also heard that comic animators have problem with the GIMPs layers and not being able to make changes to layers all at once, or something like that. Something to consider. I suspect how everyone uses the GIMP for different things, they will have much different issues.

It would be really nice though if the GIMP would take the next step and compete with Photoshop on all fronts AND usability. I think it can be done, as we have seen with other open source software. Just gotta set it as a priority, and then get to the grind stone.
"Ask any artist, if he can only have two tools to do all his work: video, print, advertising, tv, dv, web... It will be Photoshop and After Effects, hands down." Hmmm, I haven't even heard of an artist using After Effects and have no idea what it does, so I would debate the reality of the second part of your statement (no offense). All the artists I talk to (usually web comics, and various print artists) usually use Photoshop and Macromedia Flash. The other stuff they seem to have used was also from Macromedia. I have even debated what would happen if Macromedia and Adobe either merged, or one or the other bought the other company. Kinda interesting to think of the improvements to interoperability (plus merging Fireworks with Photoshop).

WOW! That is stupidity in action. I must say that IBM selling this unit is in my opinion absolutely stupid. IBM is selling away its identity as a company. They are selling away their identity, REPUTATION, and oughtright POWER. You see, even if they went into producing quilting machines, they would always make big news because they created the PC and had a link to it. That was POWER, INFLUENCE, and REPUTATION with whatever this company did. They had a reputation of being computer leaders and inovators, even tho their PC unit was a back burner affair. Now they will not be associated with computer inovation or involvement, despite their main focus on service being hugely related to computing. Heck, they will now be associated with a boneheaded decision.
Now for the next year or so, everything they do will be looked at from down our noses as "how did they screw up this time?". After that we will probably start to forget who or what IBM was or stood for. Then they won't be able to capitalize in any way from their PC background. If they didn't want to produce PC's anymore, they should have just contracted out to say GIGABYTE or MSI and just slapped an IBM Thinkpad label on it. Basically unless they were taking a loss on this line (and a big one at that), the sale of this unit, name, and connection is a HUGE loss when you calculate all the intangible effects it produced. Heck, they even have a IBM Thinkpad following. A following that will have to decide if this China company will produce the same results.
This is a huge shame. Every time a company has done this they have lost their identity. Five years down the line they are just some company who has some interesting history on their ABOUT page. One that usually only peeks the curiosity of people reading through it, but garners no respect from it.
You know, a good task for a group of Solar-Powered Autonomous Underwater Vehicles would be for them to set out in a search pattern and map/photograph the sea floor in fishing areas (and others?) so that all the crap on the sea floor could be logged, and appropriate ships and/or underwater vehicles could be sent out to clean up (besides any science tasks that could also be completed at same time). I used to do commercial fishing, and we were ALWAYS picking up crap from past fishermen. Lines, nets, anchors, etc... Would be cool to have a way to clean up.

You know I use open source products and as a consumer love open source, but I have to wonder all things considered how this affects jobs in IT. I mean assuming you replaced a company with an open source group, wouldn't there be less paid people (if any) involved? True, I doubt I a direct crossover like that would happen. I just think it does probably affect the industry, and i could see a good discussion about how this affects things in addition to IT going overseas and the reduction of IT and everything else.

I would say opera is easier than that. Right click link and open in background is three down. It takes me like half a second and I keep chugging along without interuption. This is great for say articles that link 10 other interesting pages.
Secondly and just to make the point, when I say it opens all my previous webpages when I closed I am not joking. Currently when I open the page about 50 webpages open that I reference. I have had as many as 150. This is great in that instead of cluttering my bookmarks or desktop with shortcuts I can just keep stuff there on my TODO list. Basically Ill read it later.
Also, I have IE on my computer, but at this point really only for the windows update feature. My next big computer will be all linux and that will go by the wayside. (currently I have some slower computers with linux that I have tried out)
Lastly, I think firefox is much better than mozilla despite them being related (at least thats what ive been told). Mozilla to me is just an offshoot that try to copies netscape. At least with firefox they went outside the box. Like opera they have good download managers tho.
I have Opera thanks. Firefox, IE, Mozilla, and netscape can kiss my butt. Seems most of them are just catching up to Opera, but opera keeps moving on.
I can open pages in the background so I can continue to read my article, and when I open Opera it goes right back to where I left off opening all the pages open when the program is closed. Email, Chat, and news. What the heck else do I need.
FYI: I first compared IE to netscape a long time ago and went with IE (netscape was frustrating). Then I tried IE and Opera and I fell in love with Opera.
