    they should run a project with the future in mind. an envelope that reduces the backscatter of rfid transmitters from one's person to the street. this would (hopefully) allow a person to walk down a busy street of vending machines and storefronts with out becoming a target for overwhelming advertising directed at you and your tastes, as displayed by commercial tracking of spending habits collected via rfid. a handy addition at a later date would be to become your favourite celebrities rfid "ghost" and feel like for a day as you wander by automated greetings and advertising.

    as entanglements proceed between the computers and industry, expect to see further complexity by the seperation of quantum state pairs into phone tech and the end of cel towers. if 2 electrons can talk across the gulf of space, i should be able to get a hold of the guy on the other phone despite the tunnel. of course, it puts another scary spin on rfid, now to be known as qfid, and far more difficult to spoof should the occassion arise.

    thanks for the replies. regarding "entirety of point to point" power, i was trying to say that not only does the line need to be powered to be active, but so does the handset config, the pc terminal, the tranmission line, the routing infrastructure to get to the other end, and all the opposing end equipment as well. unless voip has come further, and slimmer, than i've otherwise read.

    and use stink bombs in directional arrays around the home. the fact is unless you have a lot of money, effective home defense is unattainable without indisciminate injury. so it's back to the basics... don't leave stuff in the car, and leave the windows/doors open/unlocked. lessens property damage. don't leave stuff out in the home that can be seen through windows and pilfered later. so, until directional sound arrays become a commercial reality and become available with home defense in mind, don't hold your breath on serious solutions and if your poor(ish), you might as well get out of town. hurray for the insurance industry (groan).....

    with the new norm of rolling blackouts and power supply infrastucture disabilities, how can we be so reliant on an emergency system meant for, uh, emergencies, like the kind that happen with typically powerless results? and for those who think their little ups will keep them in conversation, you're attempting to power the entirety of the line system from point to point. but it does allow a bit of wiggle room if a ton of these ups systems were added for that purpose. one office connects to the next, to the one across the street, and blammo, a new version of 6 degrees of seperation.

    i appreciate the heads up, but longhorn is still too far away and it's limited availability even at that time due to price point. personally, i find it kind of amazing that this issue has yet to be really recognized as an opportunity by cs/audio professionals considering the inroads made by multimedia systems and the techsavvy typically associated with such things.

    should be mandatory. i have a pc used for multimedia activity (gaming, movies/tv/music) and what i want to see out there is a program to seperate audio channels and effective volume control of those channels. i want to be able to watch a movie on the dvd player in my system, sound through the stereo, and not have to listen to the boops and beeps background programs emit on a regular basis. or webbing while listening to music and the annoying trend in integrated audio in advertising on pages. DOES ANYBODY KNOW OF ANYTHING LIKE THIS?

    well, until transportation relies on something other than oil the loss of oil supplies will drive prices skyward until the transitional nature of locomotive power replacement is complete, in approximately 10-15 years, if we did it right now with technologies that are not ready for that. if there are serious options for the 1,000,000,000 barrels of oil used around the world EVERY 10-12 DAYS then where and what are they? in a watt against watt against infrastructure, oil wins hands down. it is the root of the tree of modern life, so please, feel free to strike the root and watch the tree shrivel.

    considering the human race is on the edge of an energy crisis of significant proportion (north sea strike may close 3rd largest world supplier/ 3mbpd off the market, saudi fields using bottle brush techniques to drive oil production/last gasp measures for dying fields, iraq, zero reasonable replacements) the likelyhood of significant, independant robotic use will be left to a select few and likely developed for military use. i look forward to being killed by our new mecha masters.

    the thing that strikes me about this is that most replica finger prints are made with a gel based alternative. if we all remember from camp, shining a flashlight through our fingers illuminated other features, such as capillary distribution in the tips, or subsurface scar tissue. all of which are likely to decrease the ability to spoof, but require more resources than 2d print scanning techniques.

    ahem, take the f#ckers back to court. if this is their idea of responsibilities inherent in the court order, then take them back and add penalties. the thing i find stupidist of all, downright moronic in fact, absolutely ignorant, is that the value of martha stewart's halloween sounds was probably 19.99$ retail, and figured in the settlement shipment that way. now multiply that by greatest hits '71, and remember the cost of less than 1$ per disc to produce.

    i have to agree with you on all those points, and add a few of my own. i use bit torrent, winmx, and kazaa lite. if that doesn't label me as a pirate then assume i also carry a parrot, an eyepatch, and a blunderbuss. why am i a pirate? or better yet, why am i labeled as a pirate by those who have a vested interest in maximization of profit over people or availability? an example of labeling came up when i took my son to lotr:rotk and in the "now used for advertising moments" at the beginning of the movie slot (anger... rising..., paying someone money to see bullshit, on a corporate scale) and there was a "public service announcement" (talk about loose use of the term) from the mpaa that showed a guy who worked on the movies saying how if everyone copies movies and don't pay that he's losing money and possibly his job. 1) where's the producer? doesn't he make a couple of gazillion off the top and sign the checks of everyone else? 1a) claims that edgy movies will suffer are brutally useless as these films are less likely to be copied than paid for. as a personal note i pay for art house, doc's, etc. pirates of the carribean however has more gold than it really needs. 2) statistical analysis of the whole pie, not just the one the mpaa is selling you, has shown that there has been 0 (ZERO) loss in dollar value to pirates. it is a technical fringe populated by people with little money to begin with (uhhh, students, etc)that require at least a modicum of knowledge to implement properly, identify spoofs, clean corrupted files, and in the long run, the time taken to do this exceeds the 10$ otherwise spent. now, i don't sell anything. i'm not burning discs and throwing them out the back door. these files are for private use. but back on topic, if this "new" distribution method actually delivered and agreements were made with the various isp's for local caching then it could fly, but until then it's the high seas for me.

    yes, there are a bunch of other benefits to hemp over algae. one definitely being that it's tougher to roll algae. but by coming down like a ton of bricks on one option, not an answer in itself, but an option, shows a level of shortsightedness i see all too often these days. if hemp production and it's associated benefits to fuel, paper, food, medecine, and textiles amoung other things are not good enough reasons to grow it for you. then by all means continue to play with the set up your basement craving the day you can smoke it without going to jail.

    i find it interesting that it's not the statements themselves for which he is suing, but the "presentable context". it's like the day you happen to look like hell and then go get some milk at the store, but f*ck, their's the xgirlfriend, or the boss, whatever, as well as anyone else who might care to notice. they then take away an opinion based on that context and whatever other context they already carry. this is entirely human. as is being lazy and just scanning the first 3 pages of google without actually looking at the sources. which unfortunately makes it like the store running a tape loop of you on that bad day, over and over, right in the front window. now while google is an automatic system, and they are still reproducing material, does this mean that google supports the statements? or acting as an intermediary, like a newspaper in presenting content (we can't actually call them facts, or even really useful information any more can we?). if google had added at the top of the page that "we hear this guy is an asshole and blows donkeys and thought you should know too", then, maybe he's got his case. as it stands however, i think this guy's an asshole and he blows donkeys.

    so the post is about human powered tech, not alternate power tech. they're already being looked at for militay boots ,but i'd like to see the piezio electric shoes/boots for use with an integrated system of things like woven heaters in pants/coat/shoe liners, entertainment/communications. a powered antennae woven into the back of a jacket would be a leap on signal strength and have the added bonus of being shielded, most use handsfree anyway so just plug into the clothes. granted, it is a specialized and initially costly set of applications but over time (assuming there's a technology rich future available to us given current events and lessons of history, but i digress) we could see such things as being more easily available.

    talk about shortsighted. it pains me to see the possibilities of tech hobbled in this and so many other ways (drm, *cough*) by monopolistic groups running protection rackets. i regularly download tv over p2p because it doesn't make my broadcast area, or is several seasons behind. as it stands right now i can download episodes of stargate being broadcast in the uk 2 seasons ahead of canada, and one season ahead of the states, in 30 meg files in about 15 minutes. yes, the quality is crappy. so, here's a potentially profitable opportunity for all, have the shows placed on p2p networks at higher speeds and quality but with advertising intact or use a system of subs allowing multiple commercial streams to be spread across a variety of programming. it's just a logical extension of the network. people who download benefit by the higher quality/speeds. advertisers benefit from a market extension, networks/production houses benefit from increased and widely varied audiences without borders as well as the profit streams of streaming. they don't even have to put much into the backend with profit sharing to the isp's who may host the content. kinda gives cable a bit of new meaning. offshore tivo anyone?
