For a computer "scientist" (software guy), not releasing the "research" is perfectably acceptable. It's for "the profit of the bla bla bla". There's always a reason to not do this.
You are making the most common mistake there is in the IT world. A computer scientist is NOT a software guy. He is 95% mathematician and 5% personal interest in another science.( for example Geometry , Biology , Visual Arts , Philosopher).
"Computer Science has as much to do with computers , as astronomy with telescopes."
Not the exact quote , but you get the idea.
... ASUS changed some megahurtz in some part of the mama-board , and it is a bit faster without sacrificing stability , and with the same guaranty.
The question is why should we care? It's their choice , their motherboard. If they choose to use quality materials that enable them to overclock by 2Mhz then let them do it.
I wish they would overclock by 20Mhz and still offer the same stability and guaranty.
I wonder if this could have anything to do with the fact that the user interfaces, OS messages, and help files are not "user friendly" and written in mysterious GeekSpeak that the average user doesn't understand.
If Windows help files are GeekSpeak , then Linux "help files" are hierogrlyphics.
this would be a terrible thing if it happens. Please allow to explain:
In my school they switched to Linux 3 years before I graduated , as a result we had 3 years of Computer Science courses on Linux. As I am posting on Slashdot it is pretty obvious that I didn't have a problem with this but the case quite the opposide with most students.
Allot of my classmates had barely used a PC , and what was important at that time , was teaching them how to get work done on the PC. Now for better or worse that means knowing your way around Windows.
The complete switch to Linux basicly took that chance away from them . They were learning Linux , when at home ( and at Internet Cafes , and pretty much everywhere) they had only Windows.
Obviously this isn't good.
A school must have BOTH imho. Linux is a nice thing to learn , but Windows is too. You shouldn't dump Windows completely because in the end the kids are the ones that are going to suffer from it.
I decided after 4-5 years to buy a Sony Product. The 20GB "MP3" hard drive walkman.
I will only mention 3 points:
Software is sabotaged to crash when tranfering MP3's.And I mean every 100 songs. Google it.
Walkmans equalizer doesn't work on MP3's.( = VERY flat sound).
MP3's use 20% more battery then ATRAC.
And that is why I don't buy Sony anymore. Vote with your wallet.
You will get a cnet review in the top spots , a review at extremetech or something like that , and a gazzilion pseudo pages that want to sell you said product.
It quite irritating when you are trying to find a review of a product that hasn't been reviewed by any major sites.
In my eyes Google has started slipping , or if you put it in another way , people have learned to manipulate it.
The movie industry has a big chance it seems. Downloading movies is ( for the most part) time consuming and frustrating. Speeds are slow and finding a movie that is not very popular is a pain in the ass. The size of ripped movies and bandwidth of most users , makes it imposible to download a movie if only 1-5 persons are sharing it.
That is exactly the point where the movie industry should hit. Bring a service of on demand video , with some basic protection ( cause let's face it it is going to get cracked) but wicked speeds, lots of litles and reasonable speeds.
Seriously if I had to choose between downloading an older movie ( for example the Abyss) from the 10 guys that share it , taking 40 hours to finish , and getting it at 300kb/sec with 5.1 sound and high picture quality , and subtitles , I would pay the 5$ without a second thought. I think allot of people would.
If they are smart they won't wait for a "movie Napster" to evolve , and then act. They should create a fast , quality video on demand service , and create a user base. Subtitles , 5.1 Audio , high quality rips , different languages , Extras , Speed . These are good points they could use but..
I don't see it happening. All I see is more lawsuits and allot of bitching around.
Disclaimer: Yeah I know BitTorrent can be fast and easy to most of us here , but this is Slashdot , hardly the average click and play Joe.
Anyway excuse the length.
Sure it seems as if Microsoft is trying to patent everything but the space bar, but I think there is a good reason is behind it.
I doubt they will start sueing people and companies about such rediculous patents , they are just trying to play safe. A judge will be MUCH more likely to make MS pay big $$ to some bs company because they patented something equally stupid, then the other way around.
Microsoft has realised what a turd the software patent system is , and is trying to shield itself from companies that try to make a buck by doing nothing else then suing left and right.
The NVidia cards aren't going to be native PCI Express cards till the next generation of chipset. They are exactly like the AGP version , but with an inbuild adepter to PCI Express. So they don't take advantage of the PCI Express bandwidth etc.
ATi on the other hand is going to be native , thous taking advantage of everything PCI Express has to offer.
If Nintendo doesn't break the compatibility to the 's of GBA games , Sony will almost certainly fail.
I also don't think that the PS1 / PS2 consoles have anything to do with this issue. The handheld market is very different. Power and gfx aren't as important , battery life and simple gameplay are.
So far Nintendo has proven that it understands what gamers need. Simple games , that kick ass.
Sony will try to win buyers with 3d gfx and whatnot. And will fail.
You are right about Plato , but I also believe that Plato might have used the story of the Minoan civilization as a basis for his alligory/symbolism.
But yes.. I doubt that we will find Aquaman any time soon..

You know what is really funny?
The fact that 80% of your comment is true and you don't even realise it.
Get out of your geek shell and see what the people really want. Cause guess what. That is what it is all about.
I'll just make a simple question:
What did you eat today?
Only healthy food right? What? Sugar? Coke? Cake?
ARE YOU INSANE? Doctor say that that isn't healthy.
Just like geeks say Windows isn't "healthy" in a software kind of way. But you still eat those stuff because guess what. You want to.
My mother want's colors. She likes the pictures in the User Selection screen. She even likes Clippy.
And this is what it is all about. What the people want.
Or are you saying that we should decide what the people want. Cause that would be kinda scary.

I fail to see why this is bad.

Sorry for the lengt.
what the comments would be if this was about Microsoft releasing a patch for Longhorn right after release?
Or should I say Micro$oft?
Gates Foundation /waits for the "OMG IT'S FOR TEH TAXES" response.

Because we all know how well it worked out for the RIAA.

You have to look at it both ways.

Given that XP is still unstable I stoped reading there. XP is NOT unstable.
It's called doublethink.
