  1. Locals on FCC Opens Market for Cable Boxes · · Score: 1

Informative post. The only part I don't get is why I am forced by the satellite companies to only get my local affiliates rather than any of their other city affiliates. For example, I like to get the Washington DC locals but I can't because I live in Phoenix. If it's coming from space, why is it regulated in this respect?

AJAX and signed applets complement each other nicely. Use AJAX to do the work that needs to be done quickly to keep the user's attention and use signed applets to do the heavy lifting in the background. Key to this relationship is the JSObject class.

I archive everything that I probably can't get in a store in a few years. Why have Season 1 of the X-Files taking up space when Best Buy is already archiving it for me? The best things to archive are the old cartoons that aren't politically correct anymore, funny or propaganda commercials (anti-drug), and live events like news. The best is NFL football so you don't have to watch the edit job done by NFL Films later on.

Is Alan Greenspan a scientist? No which means I don't care what he thinks when it comes to technological progress. Aside from that fact, ethanol is a sorry bandaid to subsidize the farming corporations. How much energy is used to create the ethanol and where does that come from? Same question for Hydrogen. The ONLY acceptable solution is solar so we should be working on increasing the efficiencies of it rather than pretending we are going to be saved by the magic ethanol or hydrogen bullet. Please no pro-nuclear flames, I'll save that for another rant. However, in the interim, Brazil is an excellent example of progress on our way to energy independence so my thanks for pointing it out.

It's good to know that I get their product for 24 hours but they get my bandwidth for 30 days. I don't mind using my bandwidth to share with my peers using P2P when it's an open torrent but if they want me to pay for the show and continue distributing it for them for 30 days, they are crazy. If we're stuck with the expiration rule, the clock should at least start when the user stops sharing it. Either that or subsidize my broadband.

If you're an honest person and you don't do the crime, then whatever penalties are irrelevant.

What if I am an honest person that doesn't agree that an act that doesn't financially benefit me nor directly harm an individual is a crime? It's just that the notion of "The Right Thing" is something that widely varies from person to person. This reminds me of people who say that drug testing everyone is fine because if you don't have anything to hide, you won't mind.

Actually, in Bin Laden's rationale, he is promoting his people's freedom by attacking the country that has, in his opinion, exploited his country and culture. It has nothing to do with hating freedom or revenge.

The parallel being drawn by the original poster is how our FF privately organized to form a rebellion against a colonial nation which was exploiting our country in various ways including taxes. Obviously, the exploitation of the Middle East by western corporations is different just as these "insurgents" are different from our FF. The underlying principle is similar though.
