The company I-Robot uses Java to interface a Linux box running Red Hat to all the sensors, cameras, and motors on their research line of robots. I spent four months trying to get the darn thing to work, CLASSPATHS and all to no avail. What a friggin nightmare. My master's thesis was going to be on that robot and now Auburn University is just building a robot from the ground up. Life's like that...
The images of your life will be beamed through the air to an archive that only you can access; quantum cryptography -- unbreakable even in principle -- will have made such transmissions totally secure.
Quantum crypto won't be used commercially to store the mundane details of our lives in 10 years. No need to crypto that!!! But seriously, IMHO, not gonna happen.
Some of the fancier remotes have program sequences you can input. It would be very difficult for a human to control the remote servos so exactly as seen in the vids. In fact, I doubt any of those robots had any type of sensory feedback. When one chooses remote operation, the humans eyes become the sensors that close the loop on the control system. No other sensors would be necessary. My two cents being a robot enthusiast.
Could you elaborate on your losses? I'm trying to understand how my wife and I can go about this too. Her credit card expired causing paypal to lock her out of her account... but does that translate into actual damages?

Recent IE exploits lead Microsoft developers to exclaim " Oops, I did it again...." !!!
If I were AOL or Yahoo, I'm not so sure i would want Microsoft providing the software to provide the intermediary connections. In the light of all the wonderful IE exploits and such.
The Laser Challenge V2 is known to have a wide beam width. It means you could hit a target 50 ft away by aiming anywhere from ~15 feet to the left of the target to ~15 feet to the right of the target. Definitely not realistic. A simple mod would be putting tape across the IR diode with a pin-sized hole in the tape. Play around with the diameter of the hole for best results.
But as a side note, Laser Challenge V2 makes you wear the receiver on your chest, and its an easy thing to cover the receiver with your arms as you shoot at your opponents. You almost need multiple receivers which can monitor hits from all directions, but who wants to buy multiple Laser Challenge V2 setups for one person.
Paintball turns your entire body into receivers. If you crank down the velocity of your markers, you increase the number of people than can stand ( pain threshold ) to get tagged by a paintball. Remember, safety first ( googles and cups? for our male/.ers ).
I am an electrical engineer and I had a conversation with a fellow engineer about solar panels and the collection of dust. We both thought that some sort of device to remove the dust would greatly improve mission longetivity. How to accomplish that is a very complex problem. You don't want to scratch the panels, heck they are already pretty inefficient. Tilting them slighty away from oncoming winds was my idea ( but not too much as to rob the energy collection ). Reduces the dust accumalation.
mod this down if you must, but let me be the one to say what a friggin' complete waste of time. He says he wants to be unique... freak guy... hop on one leg, pull out your hair with left hand and slap yourself across the face with right hand and repeat the mantra "no one has done this before, i am unique" ad nausem...
Oh wait... a handful of/.ers are now doing this!!!
Whoever came up with the the VIN system as it stands needs to be drawn and quartered. I assure you that had any engineer worth his salt been given the plan of VIN back in 1981, he wouldn't have allowed there to be the imminent shortage we face now. By simply giving the right data fields (specifically the last six) more than enough space, we would have never faced this crisis... and I hesitate to call this a crisis...
that I have ever bought a car that had one of those pretty white stickers that say you have $$$. The only car I've ever bought was a 1992 Mazda Protege for $2400 a few years ago. No sticker on it. However, I was getting average 30 mpg.
For those that care... I got married and sold it and inherited my wife's car '94 Corolla. I'm moving up in the world. Funny thing is... I have a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, she has a B.S. in Elementary Education and we share a car.
By the way, is it just me or are there a lot of EEs ( my type) marrying EEs ( my wife's type)...
I was sure this was a joke (Photoshop altered surfboard) and it wasn't until I saw it on Intel's website ( and even then I was wondering if Intel got hacked ) that I believed...
Its a cool spinning top with a row of 8 LEDs. As you spin the top the LEDs light up in different patterns and messages. It has built-in games and uses a magnetic compass to stabilize the messages. The best thing about the tops is its price at Walmart... under ten bucks!!! I think I want to buy a second to hack the compass.
I bank online and when I set up my account I was told to choose a password I would remember. What comes to mind... but the good old fashioned "password" . Of course, I wanted to tell that Banking Rep that's exactly what you DON'T want to do. Mine is a 9+ digit alpha-numeric combination that is not so easy to remember. Is that enough/.ers?

Besides the geek appeal of knowing PI to X amount of digits, having at least X digits memorized is faster than having to look it up.

Actual link to the sample chapter so you don't have to give your email to them.
