Yellow Dog Linux compatibility with Apple laptops highly highly depends on which laptop you have. I had Yellow Dog on my 12" Powerbook, and it just wasn't usable. Why? Sleep didn't work, Airport Extreme didn't work, brightness control didn't work. You can get a list of what features work on what Apple powerbooks here.

If the Yellow Dog linux guys can't get these features working on some of the Powerbooks, I doubt anyone can ( and they do this for a living for shits sake)

If you are going to spend money on an Apple laptop, I would highly recommend using OS X. I like to think of it as the Ultimate Linux Distro.

There is no parallel to the seamless integration Apple has with their Operating System and hardware. Unless you buy an old school Apple laptop (i.e. one that doesn't support Quartz extreme and/or can't run OSX adequately), Linux is not a very intelligent choice. imo

Although I haven't used cygwin much, I would reckon that there is no comparison between OSX and Windows with Cygwin. From what I understand, Cygwin is somewhat of a Sub-environment on Windows and can not be made to act as the true "Windows CLI". The cli in OSX however can be used as an integral part of the OS, for system admin'ing (creating accounts, turning on/off services, changing passwords etc etc).

I know there is a general dislike for Linspire on Slashdot, but I must say that if I had to give a total noob a linux distro, it would be Linspire.

    Why?

    * The installer (although very limited in versatility) is incredibly simple.

    * There are nice tutorials to guide a user around the system upon the first bootup. This is something that is very often ignored (correct me if I'm wrong). Most distros, even the noob ones, just plunk you onto the desktop after an install. How is a noob going to know what to do or what is available for them? Linspire has some very nice audio/visual tutorials explaining the ins and outs of the system and what might be useful for the user.

    * CNR - Click and Run is the bane of hardcore linux geeks everywhere, but it is actually quite a nice system, and your $5 a month gets you some great features. Not only do you get access to the standard open source software packages (without fear of compatibility issues), you get discounts on several commerical products as well. Plus, you can set up "aisles", making any reinstalls a breeze. CNR gives even the nooobiest of noobs an easy way to take advantage of the benefits of great pacakage management, without the fear of breaking anything.

And if you don't want to pay for CNR, you just need to uncomment a couple lines in /etc/apt/sources.list, and get your apt-get on.

Nobody likes the king of the hill. It's the same reason people don't like Microsoft, and the same reason no one liked NSYNC. Sure, you can justify your dislike (and people do everyday), but in the end most of it comes down to jealousy imo. There are of course warranted criticisms concerning the aformentioned subjects, but I am mostly referring to the general unfounded animosity people feel.

My initial impression of TrailBlazer is that the thumbnail history can provide visual cues for navigating your browser history and that users will respond favorably to this because these pages will look familiar. Once there are a lot of pages (500-1000) it becomes more difficult for a user to spot the page they are looking for.

And therein lies the problem. If you don't have very many pages in your history, you probably won't have any difficulty finding the page you're looking for in the first place. This leaves little application for Trailblazer -- not necessary for small amount of history, too cumbersome for larger amounts.

Taken from http://wiki.xbox-linux.org/ -- "5 Are all MechAssault CD's the same?

No. You need the original version, not the "Xbox Game of the Year" version. The newer disk has been patched and can waste a lot of time. The CD labels are identical. Look at the laser etching on the back. The new one says MS02308L while the original is MS02301L."

Notice that the only difference between the two strings is the second to last character. 8=bad, 1=good.

My recommendation would be to go to a used game store and ask to take a look at the a used copy of mech assault. If it's the right one, then buy it. If you buy it, you aren't under the same time crunch as you are if you rent it. (not to mention that you can usually get it for a mere $15)

There a couple other problems you can run into during the install. If your Xbox dashboard is above a certain version number, the Mech Assault install won't work. You have to downgrade your dashboard. You can view the version number of your Dashboard by getting System info in the dashboard(or something of that nature). Instructions on how to downgrade the dashboard are towards the bottom of this page.
The file required to downgrade the dashboard is not that difficult to get, but it can be tricky to find. (I can help you get it if need be)

Depending on what DVD drive you have, you will need to use certain brands of CD-R/RW. It is very important that the disc be compatible (for obvious reasons). In any given Xbox, there is either a Samsung, Phillips, or Thompson drive. You can identify which drive you have using this picture here. At wiki.xbox-linux.org there is a "compatibility list" that tells you what brands of CD-RW should work with your drive. The Thompson drive is the least desirable of the three, and ideally you want a Samsung drive.

There are a bunch of people readily available to help troubleshoot any problems. I got some good help troubleshooting my install, and I don't mind helping anyone out that might need it.

If you don't have an Xbox already and you want to install Linux, I would recommend picking up a used one (as opposed to new). Used Xboxes are less likely to be problematic during a Linux install due to the simple fact that they're likely to have older firmware and such.

The only 'modding' you have to do is via software, and no it does not limit your ability to play games. You can do a hardware mod, but it isn't necessary. Get all the details here.

To illustrate the point -- I have a fully functioning Linux install right now with a 2 gig root partition. If I decide I want to play an Xbox game (e.g. Splinter Cell), I restart the Xbox, put the game in the drive, and am on my way. When I want to boot back into Linux, I restart the Xbox with no game in the drive, select "Linux" from the Dashboard menu, and it boots into Xebian (Xbox version of Debian)
