the "of personal information" bit doesn't make it any less incorrect. it would just mean there was a real gold mine that also contained personal information. the grandparent might have been trying to make a funny, but it was most definitely correct.
anyone remember the bit in jurassic park where the little girl (the self proclaimed hacker) shouts "this is unix, i know this" (or words to that effect), and then hacks the computer by flying through a 3d landscape and clicking on shit. god that was bad. a friend of mine used to try and wind my up by quoting that line whenever he saw me using the command line. bastard.
grandparent - "For X to be a clone of Y, X must be primarily derived from pieces of Y. You clone a plant by taking a cutting and growing it into a new plant."
parent - "That's a graft, not a clone."
wrong. a graft is where the cuttting is *grafted* onto a different plant so that it can be feed off of that plant sap.
the word clone a clone is originally from the greek word klon (meaning twig), and it was used by horticultralists to refer to a plant which was grown from a cutting into a genetically identical copy of the original plant. so the grandparent post was right i'm afraid.

God, that's retarded. The firewall doesn't do jack shit to block outgoing traffic anyway.
a friend of mine stuck service pack 2 on his windows box and then he also put zone alarm on there to be sure. zone alarm showed up loads of stuff that the standard firewall was letting out. pretty crap work by microsoft.
grandparent post - I wouldn't allow, let alone pay, someone I didn't know anything about to supervise my kids.
parent post - Wow. So your kids have never had a babysitter, a coach, or a teacher?
are you seriously telling me that you do not "know anything about" your children's teachers, coaches or babysitters? damn that's a scary admission to make.
before you get too excited it may be worth asking the grandparent post exactly what they meant when they used the word race.
if they were using the word race to refer to species then their statement was absolutely correct, the catholic church will not wed you to horses, dogs or sheep.
i can understand a lady of college age being annoyed by people digging up the old pink is for girls stereotype, but i have an eight year old daughter and when she was younger she (and her friends) spent quite some time going through a very pink phase.
ok, she was conforming to a tired old female stereotype, but i had no problem with that. one advantage of stereotypes is they are safe zone were the rules are easy to understand. a calm simple place were the girls could all be princesses and have fun before they have to face the uncertainty of fashion and the teenage years.
it was during that phase that i set her up with a pink kde desktop. i think a range of pink "girly" themes isn't a bad thing as long as girls and boys are allowed to follow their own tastes without parents trying to enforce gender stereotypes.
the first account created can use the sudo command and give their own password. if you need to do some work as root you have to use sudo for every command, it's a bit tedious, but it does ensure that you don't accidentally stay logged in as root and do something dangerous.
if you want to enable the root account use this.... sudo passwd root...and enter a password for route.
however i do like the idea of using telepathy to run your computer, i've been thinking about ways to do this myself.

"That said, I'd never run a server on Ubuntu."
:-)
Never is a very strong word, you know something about the future that we don't.
4. fuel ecomony.
i touch type and i find the use of the escape key in vim is awkward. i was just thinking about this fact when i stumbled across your post.
thanks for passing that information on.

does that mean that babys must be blindfolded before they are breastfed?
How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read if they can't even fit inside the building?
just be patient. :-)
i've given live cds to friends before and been available to give advice, but for people who do not know any linux users this could be very useful.
whoooosh! (joke flies over head)
birth control.
holy crap! i must have tempted fate with my previous post (above). i just had firefox totally lock up on me, i had to open up a terminal and kill it.

i'm using firefox on an apple at work and it works ok for me.

That's mostly solved already. Look at Ubuntu. Anyone can install anything. But the system will ask you for the root password.
correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure that ubuntu has the root account disabled by default.
my prefered tool for compressing celine dion tracks is rm.
interesting post. i didn't really know the story behind it, i'll have to do some research into it. thanks.
some kids parents will probably spill the beens at some point. a little bit of piss taking shouldn't hurt her.
..not forgetting the blue rajah, master of cutlery. (mystery men).
