  6. Re:Calculating the size of Cars on Software Speeds Response To Road Accidents · · Score: 1

You are absolutely correct. However, in most loops installations they pair them in the lane to use two detectors to determine speed (time traveled between the two). However, new technology is allowing the use of signature analysis to determine vehicles by the signal characteristics when it passes over, however, in stop and go traffic this is very complicated and not as reliable (and length can only still be estimated). Loops are like metal detectors and produce a greater signal is denser or larger type vehicles. Not that you asked but now you know.

  7. Keypad vs. touchscreen. on Death of the Button? Analog vs. Digital · · Score: 1

I used to think the touchscreen was a modern solution to the keypad because no longer were you constrained by a static button interface, you could change button layouts and use graphics instead of just numbers and letters. However, when my local grocery store switched from a keypad to a pen touch screen for the chekout console, I found myself amazed at how much more "labor" intensive and slower the checkout had become. Now instead of punching in my choice and pin, I have to pick up the pen and wait (because the system is much slower)to enter in my selections when the keypad had a tactile interface that was simple. In some instances, the keypad and analog button interface just works better!

  8. Re:PLEASE someone, hook these to a traffic light. on Surveillance Cameras Get Smarter · · Score: 1

They can be, but a good loop detector is 99.5% accurate (note: 170 controllers don't always have good loop detectors). This beats camera detection by a long shot, even in the best conditions. The downside to loops is the cost of installation, and the limitation of detecting vehicles that aren't in their field. Bicycles are a bit troublesome, but then again, they are with video as well. microwave detectors are okay, but have their drawbacks as well. Basically, my point is that Video, Microwave, and other non intrusive work, but none as well as the inductive loop for detection (yet...). but how much is 2% worth anyway, that is the question?

  9. Re:PLEASE someone, hook these to a traffic light. on Surveillance Cameras Get Smarter · · Score: 1

Except that video detection has problems with light changing conditions and are not AS reliable as loop detectors. They are more expensive (minus loop installation costs) and maybe non intrusive, but still are not as accurate at detecting traffic. However, they work for the most part.

Of course our ISP have a solution such as a tax or something where we pay more and they promise that they can fix it. I beleive that has worked well in the past with the same companies that provide cell service... "just pay us more and we will provide better service" I remeber that one, that worked out great!

Ignorance is bliss until that photo and ticket get mailed.
