I can see an emerging market in "stealth printers"(tm) if that happens. This is likely to go the way of the P4 serial number. -- nothing interesting here
Or counterfeiters will just keep using the printers out there today and find some way to alter the printing process. This will only stop the causal counterfeiter that is probably stupid enough to get caught without this technology.
The neat thing is that they are exploiting the characteristics of the print process itself to identify the printer.
From the article: The technique uses two methods to trace a document: first, by analyzing a document to identify characteristics that are unique for each printer, and second by designing printers to purposely embed individualized characteristics in documents.
So there are actually two ways and the second requires redesigning printers. I wonder if the government will push printer makers in to changing their printer in the "interest of national security."
...under the country's draconian ISA (Internal Security Act) law which allows a person to be detained without trial if he is thought to threaten "national security"...
But this time it's more mean-spirited. Last time you could be either of the major parties and have fun, but this time it seems to be aimed more for the Democrats.
I have seen what you mean but I don't think it's as bad as you do. I think they still make fun of both sides penty it's just that this time around Jon Stewart, himself, is having trouble holding back his feeling of disdain for the Bush Administration. The Daily Show is still one of the most balanced shows there is (even if their anti-Bush sentients are starting to peek through). And it's still worth watching just to see Rob Corddry.
From the article: Detractors of the legislation claim that the measure would not stop the trading of copyright files and will not help the entertainment industry find a way to ensure artists get paid for the distribution of their works.
Well, what law has ever stopped a crime. Laws (theoretically) just reduce crime (but, obviously not in all cases).
Also, from the article:
"Putting downloaders behind bars, or decimating their college funds with civil lawsuits, won't put the genie of peer-to-peer technology back in the bottle or put real money in the pockets of real artists," P2P United's Eisgrau said in an e-mail interview with IDG News Service earlier this week.
This is the smartest thing I've read about file sharing in general to date.
P.S.: What is the difference between knowingly and willingly?
But it is on GNUWin, which is, in my opinion, slightly better that OpenCD (which itself is very good). It's how I got started converting my Windows box to only open source programs (except Windows, of course).
Cool, i can fake three surverys and have money sent to me, and each of my grandparents to make $30.
Actually you'd have to fake 6 to get $30. You'd need two for each of the fakes as well. So, I guess I wasn't the only person with that idea:)
Do you think that the two-party system is a good thing for America?
I think that it's good for their agendas and interests. However, it's horrible for the rest of us. With a two party system, the canidate from one side spends most of his time/effort/money bashing the canidate from the other side. Whereas with a 3 or more (or, ideally) no) party system, the canidates actually have to pick a postion and defend to it. It'd be too costly to try and bash everyone else. I'm sick of elections being about "why you shouldn't vote for the other guy" and not "why you should vote for me". I personally think that this is the biggest cause of voter apathy.
Neither side, however, will ever admit that a third party would help anything (at least not without lying).
We try to stuff to many things into kids minds too early.
I feel just the opposite. When I was growing up, I was constantly bored by school and, in hindsight, I wish they would have tought me more. Take math, for example, I'm pretty sure that between the grades of 3 and 7, I really did learn that much. The same can be said for other subjects. I do, however, understand that the public school system has to keep some kind of average pace so that the majority of students can keep up. But I still think they went too slow in many areas.
I know it was my fault, it's just that Firefox compensated for for my stupidity. What I doing was putting colors in tags in a php script and i accidently put spaces in.
I just hope this leads web-developers to eventually test and validate their pages with something else than IE.
I have just the opposite problem: I usually have to remember to go back and check my site in IE after I update it. I've had to make a lot of minor changes because something looked muffed up in IE. For example, IE doesn't like when you put spaces inside of the quotes around HEX colors. (e.g.: bgcolor=" #333333 "). That color appears green in IE.
Really? If I knew someone who was spamming, I'd turn them in for free. Any cash would just be a bonus.
You make a good point. It's like when they double the bounty on Osama. Like people in Pakistan/Afganistan are sitting around saying, "You know, I'd turn him in for $50 million, but $25 million just doen't speak to me."
Actually, I'd turn in a spammer just to get a couple of free punches;).

Now, if there was only some way for me to play those games on my computer for free...

They have the Patroit Act too?
I agree. If he was killed by a crash of SpaceShip One, that would be ironic. This is just coincidental.
I'll probably burn for this, but that was the funniest thing I've read in awhile....maybe it's just late.
Sadly ironic
I think it's more coincidental than ironic, but I could be wrong

But as far as I can tell the expense involved outweighs any gain in performance;
Isn't that what being a geek is all about? It's a "becuase it's there"-type of thing.
It's actually a shame it isn't part of the OpenCD
But it is on GNUWin, which is, in my opinion, slightly better that OpenCD (which itself is very good). It's how I got started converting my Windows box to only open source programs (except Windows, of course).
Hopefully the engineering community will take an interest, and add brakes to the blueprints..."
If it's solar powered, maybe your feet will be enough to stop.

...would be good enough for me. I find it really annoying how many of the bookmarks I don't use often are broken after about a year or so.
How many bookmarks do you actually use after a year? Most stuff I bookmark is irrelevant long before it gets a chance to be broken.
Oddly, I did not have to register while the link was still in the Mysterious Future. Very strange.
The best solution, in my humble opinion, is quarantine. Get the infected user off the Internet. My ISP does it and hopefully many others do too.
Nice, more unenforceable legislation. Go Congress!

At least love @384 ranks above hate @3107
But war(304) beats peace(1155).
That has to be the coolest use of Flash I have ever seen that wasn't simply an animation. I guess I won't adblock it.
