I would think it is the people that work in 3d animation or CGI that really want a full suite of applications for graphic editing available on linux. Having to support 2 separate infrastructures, Windows or Mac for editing, and a linux cluster for the rendering, is not the best way to do things. If it is possible to run professional graphic editing applications on linux and render on linux too it would be much simpler to maintain in my mind.
While I do not know all of the details behind this I suspect that Mozilla did not have to notify Opera of any bug, in other words they did it as a heads up but were not obligated, I could be wrong though. The article is rather short and does not explain anything. For all I know Mozilla gave Opera the info as soon as they knew it, I highly doubt this, but just from the article it is hard to tell. While Mozilla could have waited, I would bet that people with malevolent intent are not overly concerned with the small Opera user base. I think that the over all the risk to the end user of the Opera browser is not much, and that the developer needs a chill pill. I know that Mozilla is not perfect, but I think that they had a good reason for releasing details about the problem. I do not know the reason, but knowing that there is a problem and that there is an update might make people more inclined to update to the safer version. So Opera fix the problem on your browser too, guess what you can look at Firefox's source code to see how the Mozilla developer's fixed theirs, and the developer with an pineapple stuck up somewhere needs to take a laxative or something.
Seeing that he works with fish and speaks many languages I must assume that babelfish are involved in some manner. Additionally the name Zoltán seems suspicious. I suggest you contact the nearest Extra-Terrestrial Human Interrelations office in your district.
hmm when I somehow come by a kid I will only talk to him in C. Eventually I will start talking in C++ to him. And lastly I will recite perl poetry. After he has mastered these 3 things I will introduce him to shakespeare. hmm maybe I won't be such a good parent, but my kid will be able to hack your kid's computer.
Well kilograms per foot could have some effect. I would not want to be locked in a space station with a 36 kg/ft man or woman. Of course the more proper measurement is kg per meter so I would not want to be couped up with a 118 kg/m person. Maybe I am just wierd or something.
They told me the name of the OS I am using is Gutsy Gibbon. I tend to differ. I call my OS GLaDOS. I have had a great install experience and I am still alive. Now excuse me I need a piece of cake.
If that was the reason at least I would understand it. While anger to that extent is not always completely rational, at least it is not completely irrational.
The problem with that would be the fact that it assumes that not detecting the gravity waves gives proof to the absence of gravity waves. However not detecting the waves does not in any way mean they do not exist. It is near impossible to prove something does not exist; note I said prove not theorize. Lack of data is not a successful conclusion to an experiment, so your headline would be in some way a fallacy.
1. No. Since there is no accurate definition for civilization, much less advanced civilization, beyond our own or conceptualized civilizations there is no way to understand other civilizations. Since there is no way to understand foreign civilizations there is no way to determine of machines will be a part of the civilization. One could postulate that a completely organic evolution for travel, arithmetic and mass communication is possible in a foreign environment. Of course I am assuming that these three things are vitally important to civilization, but I could be wrong.
2. If 1 was yes, then of course one has to understand intelligence before understanding artificial intelligence. Since I personally don't understand intelligence, and have never read or heard a complete definition of what intelligence is I cannot postulate on the interactions of AI and its predecessors. If one assumes that in the making of an AI the AI gaines characteristics of its predecessor, if AI was created at this time in our civilization, I think that yes there would be conflict. However, your question is more general then this and as a result is unanswerable.
3. Very close to question 2. Since we don't understand ourselves, we cannot understand foreign intelligences. Therefore any speculation would be questionable. While somebody might guess right, it would still be that, a guess, and would not be known beforehand.
I think that the assumption that aggression is the cause for intelligence might be correct. However survival does not rely solely on aggression, and survival is what determines evolution. One could see the abilities to avoid danger instead of defeat it as a method of evolution. We as humans had good abilities to avoid danger, by hiding or by intimidation, and we still have them. So while aggression plays a large part in our evolution, other survival skills did take place in the creation of our so-called intelligence.
Temporal consistency does not exist. Next time you are at work and it seems like a week has passed, talk to me then. Of course I am a nut and don't believe in time in general, instead just as a measurement. But, hey whatever.
My dad is an engineer working for a power company. Whenever this topic comes up he normally just shrugs and says won't work or that it isn't as green as you think it would be. First of all not every home has the ability to produce power by solar, wind, or other means. Of course in some areas like AZ it would have a good chance of working but then you have to consider the second point. To produce solar panels or wind turbines one must exert energy and also cause pollution. Santa Claus does not deliver them magically. Of course once a framework of solar or wind power is created the energy cost is not longer as much of a factor. The pollution however could very well be. To make solar panels involves complex chemicals and is usually based off of petroleum products. While the pollutants from making solar panels are not necessarily released into the air, they could very well be worse for the environment then that of gas or oil fired plants. Of course I have not made any study into this claim, but I ask people who are very strongly in support of solar power about it. Most of them don't even realize that in order to make the solar panels some factory somehwere has to make pollutants. I guess since they can't see the pollutants at their house it doesn't matter to them. Additionally I would be willing to bet that the pollution control on electrical generating plants is of a much higher degree than that of the solar or wind turbine producing factory. So while I don't know the exact facts I don't just blindly say that hey solar and wind power is green. You got to get that solar panel or wind turbine from somewhere. I hope that solar and wind power can become dominant not because of the environmental side, but because the oil supply will someday run out and I don't like being dependent on foreign nations for oil. As to your schema it would be more effective to have a couple more smaller plants and more redundant wiring. Of course the problem is cost and until it makes financial sense or the government forces them to, the power companies won't be over concerned about rare power outages. And as for the topic, stupid companies that are not secure from external threats over the internet are just that stupid. There are many ways to stop this and it has nothing to do with the structure or the grid, just from lazy management or IT.
everything I said is hearsay and might be wrong from bad memory, but I do know that somebody who knows about this stuff says it isn't all its cracked up to be.
I don't think the main problem from my point of view is current tech. If this athlete were to be allowed to use the prosthetic legs in the olympics, it would be hard to argue against future forms of the prosthetic leg. While this would of course increase the development of prosthetic legs meant for running, it would completely ruin the sport. If the only people that could compete in olympic running events were amputees wearing highly advanced prosthetics, those poor blokes from Kenya would be shit outta luck.
Why is this news. Sure its linux, and sure its slackware, but still its not like its a new gnome release its just a release of gnome on one distro. Sigh who even uses slackware anymore. It used to be great but other distros just seem to be better to me now. I guess its just once you go debian you never go back.
While I agree that we are spending too much money in iraq, but the defense budget is not necessarily a bad thing. Throughout history the most prosperous nations have usually been the ones with the most powerful military. This is because security has a great influence on trade. If I want to invest my money I want to do it in a safe place so I don't have to gamble on losing all my money due to armed conflict. Now money alone is not a guarantee to military prowess, but it does give an abstract idea. So I think that the military budget might be returning more money in trading then it is using. However there is really no way to tell. Yet knowing how much we spend on our military, I am in no fear of a foreign nation invading my home. Of course there are still terrorists, but I am more scared of homegrown criminals. Overall the side benefits of have a well funded military more then outweigh its costs.
I for one would love to run osx over windows, however I am not going to buy a new computer to run osx. My computer is just fine and I don't want to have to invest in another computer of equal or greater value to run a different operating system.
I would think that it is in their interest to look for it.
Most of a company's assets is its employees. If those assets are causing a bad public image of a company, or could cause a bad public image then yes it is in a employer's best interest to look. If a top ranking manager likes to take pictures of himself nude it could cause public problems. While the manager posts those photos is in his off-time and has no attribute to them of the fact of where he works, it isn't too much of a leap for a reporter or client to realize what they are and then either report or cancel a contract. Thus the actions of the employee in his off-time directly affects how a business runs.
If what you do in your off-time does not hurt the business it shouldn't be a problem. Yet, with so many viewpoints on what is right and wrong in todays world even the littlest hint of inappropriate action being publicly distributed might cause problems. So in my opinion, while it might seem wrong for employers to fire an employee for what they find on the internet about the employee, it is financially justifiable. Since we live in a capitalistic society if something is financially justifiable it usually occurs.
People who think that what they put on the internet is in any form private should have a 2x4 with the words "Dumbskull" on it nailed to their forehead. What you do in private should not affect your work or cause you to be fired. But if something is put on the internet it is no longer private and should not be treated thus.
I dunno screen is about the most useful thing he listed. While old, I still think it is innovative as I can think of no other program that has the functionality of screen. What other program lets you ssh to a server to run screen then iirsi, disconnect from that server, go several miles to a different computer connect to the server run screen and access the same iirsi session. And that is just one ability screen has.

I wouldn't say it is pointless. However, overusing an AV is pointless. Scanning a file every time it is accessed is pointless, as it should of been checked before it was allowed permanently on the machine. If that file has not been modified since the last AV check it should not be scanned. Additionally scanning files you create is rather pointless because if you are putting a virus in your files either a) you know what you are doing or b) you have another virus or trojan somewhere else putting that virus in your file so any action on the created file would not fix the problem. There are many viruses out in the wild and most AV software can check for many of them. Not only are new viruses a threat but older ones can still cause large problems. So AV software does have a place in modern computing, but many developers of AV software make it do more then it needs to and use way too much overhead and time to do it.
Using the internet is like sex. The only way to completely avoid viruses is abstinence. It is almost always safe if you do it with somebody you know to be safe like a spouse. If you are dealing with the unknown or unreliable, protection is your best bet. While AV software isn't as reliable as a condom (which isn't 100% reliable) it is better then nothing.
Remove all Airport security. Lots more convenient, and probably about as secure.
Do I win?
Er, yes. Meet my bigger friends: Burleigh and Stronginthearm. :-)
