with intellectual property, there is no scarcity of the idea or musical recording or what not; it's free (or close to it) to copy. There is a scarcity of the idea. Only one person came up with it. Only one person invested TIME in the idea. You are stealing TIME from someone when you steal their intellectual property. It is their PROPERTY as well...it is their creation.
See, this response is flawed. Monsanto does own their seeds because they invested a lot of time and money in the traits of those seeds. Nothing is being stolen from the farmers...they can use the same old seeds they have been using for thousands of years. You, person who thinks scarcity is artificial, have never lived in a world in which you must fight for your food or you must kill in order to stay alive. Business must make profit in order to enrich your life. DO not expect freedom of existence without a fight for it...you must earn it.
Now at the same time, Monsanto does not get to fly those seeds over random farms and drop them and then sue those farmers, thats bad business, so don't think I love this company, but dammit you fools, don't think some scientist in a lab didn't work their ass off to create this amazing thing. And dammit, they better make some money, otherwise all that scientist can do for a living is steal shit from you...course you live in a world in which there is no scarcity, so no one would ever steal from you.
We have shown that socialism doesn't work with the nature of human beings as we are today. And having no IP is socialism. To say that what I create with my mind is not of value and cannot enrich my financial life flies in the face of capitalism.
Yes, the arguers will throw around that you cannot copyright a letter or a number and then that argument will be stretched into a logic that states that you cannot copyright a combination of letters and works, and as a result, there is no code, no book, no knowledge that can be copyrighted as all of our communications are simply combinations of un-copyrightable individual parts.
Well, that is a flawed logic because the process of combining words and numbers into certain orders is of value and the creation of those combinations should be something we celebrate and attempt to motivate.
Now, to say that I should have sole access to my ideas forever and that no one can ever utilize them is flawed as well because eventually someone else would come along and have thought of the same combination that I did. SO yes, the current system of copyright is flawed because they keep extending it. Kinda stupid to serve the bigwigs more money. But do remember, that I do deserve to make whatever comes with creating that product for a certain time period, because otherwise, I would have no motivation to create and the world would never benefit.
The Pirates Bay is theft. So was Napster and so is most of what occurs in the warez rooms on IRC. The foolish logic that they don;t do the stealing them self, they just allow for people to do it on their own is a foolish logic. Imagine being a judge and hearing the argument, "Your honor, I have nothing to do with people looking at kiddie porn, I just link to the websites where it is hosted. Those people choose the actions on their own." Well guess what, you are directly aiding a crime.
But that is OK for now in my books (stealing shit from the Bay) because in order for the big wigs to make money from all of the data we are stealing they need to evolve and something the motivation to evolve needs to be forced by taking money and stealing from them. Its a great motivator that, in the long term, will benefit us.
I like IP. I like The Pirates Bay. And I like my double espresso BLACK!
As we citizens have chosen to ignore what our responsibility to the planet is, it has come to groups like GreenPeace to push us and remember. We have chosen to grasp the philosophy of if I am the only one to do it, it won't hurt anyone. That obviously is a foolish logic.
I am quite happy that they take angles like this. And I am quite happy that people react. And I am quite happy that they attack the high profile targets. Thats their job.
Human productivity is no where near where it can be as our environment as of yet isn't near as efficient as it could be. How much time do we spend fiddling with spreadsheets? How much time do we spend looking for pertinent information or simply digging through piles of random data? How much time do we spend looking for passwords and wasting time clicking on in boxes and deleting misspelled words? Why do we click and type when we could look and think? The amount of time that i waste every single day at my office tells me that efficiency is no where near topped out. We haven't built machines as of yet that intelligently take care of us. Google I think might be the first to give it a real shot.
Once we start getting the knowledge we need when we need it we will then start to push toward our efficiency limits due to the fast that we will then be doing the things that we are good at as a species, i.e. thinking and contemplating. We aren't good computers...because that isn't how our environment shaped us. We are good at abstractly piecing together a situation to create.
Lets start chopping off things we have to do. No more bills. No more answering phones. No more looking up information on the internet. No more shuffling through spreadsheets. No more moving the mouse. Really if you want to get extreme you can step a bit farther and remove cooking food, cleaning clothes, driving...etc. All of the monotonous things that we do (though some of us love those things in life, others don't) cant be replaced, if we choose, by a machine.
We are interesting little creations. We have a lot of skills that can be complimented as of yet. we have no where near topped out. We are still evolving for lords sake.
I look forward to my highly evolved and integrated future overlords.
Imagine then connecting every one of those computers (cell phones) that are floating around in our pockets with some beautifully written communal software. Mob super computers....people will come together to solve mathematical problems. The third world, without ever building the infrastructure of Manhattan will have the opportunity to equal all the tasks of the largest IBM monster these days. Just gather and speak and let your cell phones do the work.
Every cell phone will always be on and always be thinking...we will all donate our spare minutes to searching for aliens, or folding proteins or whatever it is that day that interests the populace. Eventually we will sell our processing time to large groups of people who decide where to apply our processing time based upon the amounts of money the corporations are willing to pay us...as it is they who will need our computing power (this is after the major pieces of the corporation dissolve away to leave nothing but random people across a globe strung together by radio electromagnetic waves of some sort...I digress...).
Yeah...things like this are interesting. A new concept which, even though it is almost obvious to see it after you are shown it, you become instantly enthralled by another avenue of potentials that arise.
The crank part of it was removed. A few weeks (months) I read an article talking about the stresses that having a crank inside of the machine would cause due to the magnetism and other things going on. They diceded more so to help develop other power sources along with the laptop to make it work. At one point, I think Negroponte made a quip that the younger brother would pedal the bike while the older would surf, and vice versa.
Either way. I am going to buy a few to donate. The global conciousness must arise and be educated.
This is a shining example of the beauty of the internet. We are able to pool the resources of the intelligent masses and are allowing them to benefit financially to help others. The concept of taking cash out of peoples bank accounts and making it available to other random private folks I find amazing. This idea will work...whether or not in this incantation I think has no relevance. This is an amazing idea simply.
People have been attacking it due to the potential losses by private people and how cna they handle these losses...well the intelligent ones will properly build a portfolio which takes advantage of the strong credit ratings to get consistent low grade interest payments and then compliment that package with payments from high risk but also high gain payments. And since there is a peer to peer system going on here I have a feeling the rates of default will be lesser than those of the traditional institutions...of course that has to be back by real data over a long time frame.
I am going to take out a loan simply so I can continue to build my credit (I was going to buy a few things anyways) and so I can support this community. And I am going to stick a few thousand of my own money in there just to watch what happens with it.
The group intelligence of the world will come back to re-route all things we consider traditional and make them efficient and clean.
Wow....sorry for my foolish fanboyism...but I really love this concept.
To say just because our ancestors lived through it 780 million years ago does NOT mean that we will do just fine and shouldn't fret. Maybe something like this occuring leads to accelerated mutations and changes in the human genome (or all animals for that reason). I would like to see if there were any studies done looking at genetics before and after each of these flips in the general population of living things. The planets surface is BATHED is radiation. To think this would have no affect on us would be foolish. We will have to change the way we live. Skin cancer now a days is bad enough....imagine multiplying it by a factor of 10,000.
Eventually Google will tie everything together. This is going to be a singlke logon uber platform where everything (for the most part hopefully) can be done from my Google logon and the knwoledge of who I am will be properly pieced and known and I will be added to the greater world of who we are. They talk about the online OS. I am nearing it myself. i have a few programs on my computer that I use completely removed from the internet...and then there is my personal document collection, my warez, and all the digital media...I think we will always have some sort of personal hand held storage (all our lives on a holographic cube that only works when our fresh DNA is there...sigh)...but I think we will also operate a lot more online.
I want to contribute to the great mind that is being created within all of Googles computer. Maybe some rogue hacker who has created the virus of sentient life in computers will hacks google systems through some sickeningly simple but plentiful way of spreading. And then...just maybe... a benevolent computer god will rule the masses into a mathematical utopia of scientific and human renasaince...till some fucker trips the plug and we start killing each other again.
I don't know if I can trust that statement. We have been shown that our Federal government will now lie without breaking a sweat clearly to our face. And Microsoft, at this point, is such a jauggernaut of American corporation and so very much tied into National Security by their simple entrenchment on the desktop that it might be illegal for them to say anything.
And Microsoft has been batterred so much by the legal system that by now it is beginning to hurt a bit. It needs some government support. it is being attacked from all angles.
I find this so close minded I cannot really fully pull in the many places I see wrongs. This touches so closely to racism, but not really because these rationals are so stupid. I find a certain disdain when I see communications from people like that. I personally have never been at the edge of prejudice being a white male with no accent who looks farely normal and lives in big city America. But I have been with friends who have blatantly been treated not even as a respected human right next to me. When the world begins to turn and change again and reshapes our interactions with people, certain groups that were used to being looked upon with awe will be suddenly being seen in such an astounding way (bvy them and them alone) shock will overcome.
I know this sounds very heavy and philosophical for a small issue...but it paints such a broader implication on people. Yeah, the advertising might be annoying. But then maybe you should update the game somehow to make people be able to learn who sends them through software and learn what theyb are through predictive tech. All parts of the game are important. Even gold farmers. They have purpose in playing. A true ecosystem of a game like this is significant and all parts needs to be there for it to really work well.
The shadow would be insignificant. As a shuttle's satellite upon the earth is. Because of lights characteristics light will easily fill teh space in between for such a small item. It will bend and reflect inside the atmosphere. As well, the movement of an object like this would very quickly go across the planet leaving shadows (if they are there) for very small amounts of time. Similiar to more mundane things, like, i dont know...clouds. Additionally, the shadow will only fall on teh surface of theearth when the satellite is directly between the earth and the sun, which out of the full day is a relatively small amount of time (most of the time it will be on one side of the other or even slightly behind - thinking of the phases of the moon).
Your space doldrums...ever so solid thought, but that avenue will be ever so small, and once it gets past the end of the solar system (I can't think of the term used, the Sun's affect on things dissapears as the winds of space take over). So the doldrums wouldn't leave our solar system.
In terms of transferring the power from the satellite, "scorching" could be a concern, but the manner in which the energy is being transferred is still unknown. A giant laser beam heating up a cauldron of water and creating steam to turn generators, or maybe even millions of mini distribution points, sorta like satellite radio except on a non moving house/building reciever panel would lower the scorching ability by lowering the overall amount of electricity.
The thought of putting the satellite in geosynch orbit on the dark side of the planet is ever so slightly faulty, in that no side of the earth is ever there for an extended period of time...what would be really smart would be to make several of these satellites that collect energy and then shoot their energy to satellites in geocynch orbit, with those satellite sending energy to the surface.
Doing the light pipe thing would be interesting...but that would just be lasers(not to take away from LASERS)...which are always cool.
Ahh yes...the future cometh.
People keep wondering what the next big thing will be that drives computer one step forward again. CD Roms were one of those steps. Big harddrives were a big step. Routers that could easily be setup at home. Wireless. Badass soundcards. Kickass 3D graphics. The list goes on and on of significant things.
This potentially, if moved correctly, could change it again. A 1TB drive mid to late next year. Access speeds blowing everything out of the water. The harddrive bottlenexk could dissapear soon. Imagine near instant read write speed.
I am enjoying the technological march forward. Flash memory harddrives just might get left in the dust...so sad...not really...but sorta.
Google owns the bandwidth necessary. Google has the intelligence and the foresight as well, if they can, I would strongly believe they could quickly hire in and develop the expertise to handle these services on their own. This service will not cost Google anything other than making use of existing resources, merely in new manners.
There have been many discussion in reference to them buying up large amounts of dark fiber. (http://news.com.com/Google+wants+dark+fiber/2100- 1034_3-5537392.html>) And recently I was reading about their newly developed repository hub made inside of a standard transport container. (http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20051117 .html>)They could manage from anywhere in the country easily. Other countries and major regions (Europe) I am sure they would be allowed to plog them down there as well.
I rate this stock a buy.
The company has a focus on the end result
I must say...Google continues to astound me. Continually they offer services which rewrite the rulebook. They are moving forward into new areas while others are simply wading and reacting, hoping to catch crumbs and turn them into silver while Google is reaping a harvest of diamonds and platinum. There is a reason google's tock just broke 400 and flew past it. And there is a reason they are hiring teh greatest minds in our country.
I for one welcome our new search engine overlords...who knew?
Their job right now is to protect themselves as much as possible. Though they have no real thing to worry about (or maybe they do, who knows) they need to protect as much as they can otherwise they will be seen as failures. The key for them is to get as much protection as possible...irrelevant of true need. Just get it...and if they keep trying over and over (BTW...HOW DOES A PRIVATE CORPROATION get to INTRODUCE legislation to MY Congress? WTF man?) eventually some stupid person will stick their bill on as a tagger to something significant and they will steal a little more of our freedom...sigh...i wish it were still 1899 in terms of legislation in this great nation of the USA...
Since when is Adobe's PDF an "Open standard" that can be read by all of the people? Mass. has no true indication that Adobe will allow its reader to be free for all and forever...
All predictions of the future have been wrong. That is a stupid thing to say. Kinda removes all of the minimal amount of credibility you had.
IPv6...already here, floating around China and the Pentagon moving on it. HDTV...were you running out of things to say? Or do you live in 1980? Hydrogen Cars...GM already has one...they will arrive. California is not moving west in its shifting of plates it is moving north...so California won't float out west (first one you got right) it will float up to Alaska. McDonalds food that makes you healthier...tough one... Money trees...money is paper...and back in the day money used to be found on beaches (shells)...who is to say what money will be in the future - digital bits and bytes.
The closemindedness of one such as yourself is needed to help temper the wide open minds of the futurists...we need someone to scoff at. See you when you catch up...
ohhhh...a button (a la little green guys from toy story)...
how exactly does a button make this not a phishing site? are u telling me bank of america has coders which can create buttons that have a greater level of power than the boys over in the ukraine or russia? cmon now...
Though the Google toolbar carries a certain weight behind it at this point, it is Google releasing it, it doesnt really fill any true needs. Its beauty was in that it was a free beautifully working pop up blocker that could do search without needing to go to google.com. But now my firefox already does those things. None of the other features truly are worth installing another plugin. too many and your browser slows down to gooo. and Goo isnt nice.
So yeah, awesome you FINALLY did what fifty mini coder people have already done...didnt impress me much on this one, not to say i dont think the last 15 releases have been perfect shots and i know the next 7 will probably be all A's...this was average, added to the group of random plugins...
Several things I see people saying knocking this diea...however, financially...it is beautiful.
1. Everyone here tells people to go buy a new computer for 300$...yeah thats you slashdot...and me...and your buds in the CS program...however joe six pack bought his computer for 1400$ from dell doesnt know what a motherboard is and thinks linux...well...doesnt EVER fuxxing think about linux
2. There is not as of yet ANY truly branded hardcore computer repair group spanningt the country (cept maybe GeekSquad from best buy but that is stretching it). these people who get there names branded properly are going to do well.. BRANDING this is going to be HUGE...Franchising this out will be well worth it...
3. these guys are AWESOME for tie ins to get into a customers home 9if working busniess contacts and vice versa) to get easy extra business with 1/2 the marketing...if you are good and have osme perosnality and know how to get the computer to kjust work (and add value...free internet software some education during the fixing...) you can do very well
the service industry is what we will all become
negative....as computers get smarter and systems evolve here in teh coming future the long term ability of these people is interesting because computer power may soon be something on tap...plug in a monitor and boom...everyhting u could concieve...
Wrong...body size has nothing to do with brain size. Dinorsaurs, largest land animals ever..had brains the size of a walnut...there are quite a few animals in nature which are larger than humans whih have significantly smaller brains...
lions and tigers and bears for one...
i thin the neuron density as well as the pattern that they are connected matters far greater...
Could there be something designed which would automatically send an email or hammer the web site of whatever links/email addresses are in teh spam? It would drive bandwidth costs through the roof for the hosters of the sites as well it will be useless traffic and email boxes would get flooded.
This doesnt even have to be installed at the user level...let the ISPs do it, they already scan your email any remove a lot of junk from it as of now, let them get the 100% match or blocked address list or something...real fast it will stop, they would become valueless.

Go tech!
Google owns the bandwidth necessary. Google has the intelligence and the foresight as well, if they can, I would strongly believe they could quickly hire in and develop the expertise to handle these services on their own. This service will not cost Google anything other than making use of existing resources, merely in new manners.
- 1034_3-5537392.html>) And recently I was reading about their newly developed repository hub made inside of a standard transport container.
There have been many discussion in reference to them buying up large amounts of dark fiber. (http://news.com.com/Google+wants+dark+fiber/2100
Mass. has no true indication that Adobe will allow its reader to be free for all and forever...
hrmppphh....grandstanding you might say.
See you when you catch up...
ohhhh...a button (a la little green guys from toy story)...
how exactly does a button make this not a phishing site? are u telling me bank of america has coders which can create buttons that have a greater level of power than the boys over in the ukraine or russia? cmon now...
PUSH MY BUTTON BABY!!
Dinorsaurs, largest land animals ever..had brains the size of a walnut...there are quite a few animals in nature which are larger than humans whih have significantly smaller brains...
lions and tigers and bears for one...
i thin the neuron density as well as the pattern that they are connected matters far greater...
well...you could look at the pictures...those help. :-)
