  1. Re:The best defense is...? on Old Airlift Vehicle Concept Made New · · Score: 1

I'm seeing this... It could replace AC-130s, etc, especially if it could sustain a military laser. Even though fuel for a chem. might be a problem, there's also a chance it could support a solar panel array on the top. Even an anti personnel laser could be handy, if the range was there. Very effective as a low level satellite, and, as you mentioned, as a wide area guard system. A resupply system would need to be developed (maybe a helo landing pad on top, too? Or just a "drop pad" where heavy lift helos could dump pallets). But, with electricity from solar, water from the atmosphere (possible?) and steam heat even (water from atmospere + solar water heating possibly?), this is starting to seem like a fairly useful platform, in applications like military deployment in civilian areas (Eye in the Sky? I need the green car ahead of me lasered- they're not coming out for the checkpoint. Just heat them to about 150F so we can get them out).

Agreed. I'm not a power-user, and I have a decent-enough PC when I have a lot of video to work with, but my 866 Mhz tablet does fine with DV over Firewire when I've used it. It plays fast-twitch 3D games OK (Q3, Cube), but my most demanding use is usually multitasking a Word doc, PowerPoint (we use it for our students to prepare promos for our in-school TV channels), and editing an audio or video clip. Once a year, I have large Publisher files (yearbook). So far this year, the yearbook is actually easier on the tablet than on our VAIO. Having a vertical page mode is handy for that, too.

Even though I don't need it, the people who work on the yearbook with me find it easier to visualize the finished product.

I agree that tablets are a niche market, but having longer battery life may help expand that niche. Having a tablet in hand for an 8 hour day could be very useful for the teachers (and others) who may not find time in their day to stop using their PC, so it can charge for a few hours.

I haven't checked it out, but one poster mentioned a markup of 1000% for premade cables.

If you have a person on staff who will be installing cables (and, in most cases, going room to room, and probably installing switches, and plugging the cables into the equipment) that person should be the one to make cables up. Of course, they should also be the person who checks the "store-bought" cables to make sure they're good before installing. Or is that not cost-effective?

Glad to reply. I'm actually a computer teacher at a (very) small private school in the eastern USA. I'm personally pro-gun in general, but think our (American-USA) society is a long way from where it should be, for guns to be available easily.

The "American Dream" has gone from blazing through new territories (OK, we weren't doing that well even then, if you ask the buffalo and the Sioux), to working hard and maybe running your own business. I think that was our peak, when being your own boss was everbody's dream.

Now, we've moved on. For the past few decades, investing wisely and reaping rewards was "the dream" (no actual work involved, though, just monetary risk). Now, everybody seems to dream of cheating the system, winning some huge lawsuit, or hitting the lottery. Nobody looks forward to working and earning an honest income it seems.

I know this generalization isn't directly related to gun-control, but it illustrates why the gunissuue, and P2P are problematic; if something can be used for an illegal or downright dumb purpose, we will use it that way here in the US.
