Your making a very poor comparison as the P3-800MHZ is that price because it is no longer in production. That Athlon will also probably soon be out of production as well given their migration to a 333MHZ FSB. The 2100 would be on the low end of their current production scale (if they are still producing them) they are probably just trying to clear out inventory.
Also you mention "pricewatch (which I would never buy from by the way)" you don't buy from pricewatch - its simply a search engine for comparison of prices - just like anything else there are good and poor vendors reflected in their search a little common sense and a place like http://www.resellerratings.com/ can help ensure you get a good price from a good price, even one listed on pricewatch.
In some organizations and especially in Canadian Universities where the funding simply isn't there to establish a supercomputing infrastructure (an article last week referred to a University in the Southern USA that had greater supercomputing capacity than all of Canada) the ability to purchase computing power on demand will probably be of great interest to Academics and medium to small sized businesses.
But the money for IBM wouldn't just be in the sharing of the computing power.
Say that Company A lacks the programming staff to develop a program for assessing the success of their Oil drilling or other geological analysis they need to do. What if IBM developed the custom program on behalf of the company and as well sell them the CPU time to run it. Would be a great way to increase their Consulting business and this one simultaneously.
I think it will be a very successful business model.
I'm also curious if it might on the whole reduce the power consumption of Server-Farms as fewer would be needed if IBM had a number of them prebuilt and ready to serve up power. I would imagine that a number of Hollywood studios might prefer this model to constantly upgrading their own server farms.
As for implementation of the communication end of things something like CANET:
perhaps the best part about it is that it sounds suspiciously similar to the "SEP" (Somebody Elses' Problem) field from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Good machines very durable - gel pack around hard drive to protect against shock (handy in rough seas) spill proof (lots of water around might be handy) - lots of other anti shock & durability features as well.
higher end models meet us military ruggedability requirements as well.
The 3 year 48 hour turnaround warranty and simply have to make a phone call to recieve international warranty coverage - handy since you'll probably be going places on your boat;)
"But how would that be different than what we just did in Afganistan? There was an organization in that country that caused serious damage to the United States. We ordered the ruling government (the Taliban) to turn over the terrorists or we'd go in there and do it ourselves. They didn't so we did"
You are advocating violation of the sovereignty of a nation because its members have slighted the United States. Perhaps Columbia is ill equipped to deal with this issue, perhaps it will never be resolved.
But the United States is not the world's police force. It may have the guns but it does not have the right. Simply having the power to do something does not make it right.
The United States, the land of the free? Such an action would be "dictating the rights" to the Columbian Government. "You have the right to rule your Nation, except when it affects us and then we must step in because you are not capable."
How long till the United States declares the "War against Al Queda" won and withdraws from Afganistan? The United States helped Afganis oppose the Russian Occupation and left them a broken country. Once the United State's goals are complete Afganistan will be forced to build alone, and they may not be able to overcome the many warlords of their nation.
The United States does not have the right to interfere in the sovereignty of foreign nations.
"I asked how many crimes were committed using text messaging or email and the answer is: none. Not one." What about harassment? That is certainly a crime that can translate into any medium of communication, which e-mail and text messaging include.
"This should save me quite a few bucks, and I get the exact system I want."
I think you need to ask yourself a few questions before you determine that building a computer yourself is actually saving you money.
----- How much is your time worth to you?
Do you have the time to sit down and troubleshoot issues? Do you have the time to pull apart your computer and fix it if need be? Could you be spending the time involved in maintaing your computer with your family? On work? @ Play?
--- Can you live with downtime?
What if you don't have the $ when a component goes dead to replace it? I was in a position a few years ago at university where my harddrive died with all my notes on a week before finals - Micron came through and I had a new harddrive inside of a few business days - but I as a student would not have had the money to replace it had i built it myself.
----- Are you prepared to have to deal with EACH individual hardware manufacturer of each individual peripheral in your computer?
Some sites you buy from a better than others and will act as intermediaries in the warranty process - but if not - YOU are personally responsible with dealing each manufacturer of each component. My friend recently lost a CPU (no not overclocking - Heatsink fastners on the ZIF socket BROKE and HSF assembly fell off the cpu) AMD did cover the replacement of his CPU but MSI would not replace his motherboard. He was without his Processor for a few weeks till AMD shipped him his replacement.
If you get an onsite warranty from whatever manufacturer you purchase your computer from you are saving yourself tons of time and headaches.
Purchasing from a local computer store vs a brand name? - If its a local computer store that has been around for a very long time and you do not plan on moving fine. But remember that most independant stores would require you to ship it to them if you moved somewhere else - for warranty coverage.
Personally I build my own computers. I've done tech support, sales, and its my hobby. I'm a university student and I do not mind spending my time maintaining my machine. Once I get a real job and get out of school Alienware here I come so that someone else can worry about my comp. Because at that point - It will no longer be worth my time.
I dunno I think the first African American Woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role is a pretty big deal and it was perfectly acceptable if she was overwhelmed and emotional in this situation.
Wouldn't contacting your local MP be a more effective way than to contact the Premier of a province? You know the whole federal vs provincal jurisdiction thing.
And exactly how much of NASA's work do you think has a direct finacnial benefit for any party.
NASA is largely a Pure Science organization, that's part of the problem with it trying to find funding but this is not necessarily a bad thing.
Congress " So what does that do ?" NASA " It'll teach us things we never knew before." Congress " Yes but can it pay for itself?"
Knowledge is so more important than the financial bottom lines, yes it is still important to be careful and as prudent as possible but Privitization of NASA? Give me a break, are you trying to kill Pure Science research?
It seems that a lot of people are missing the point. These criticisms and suggestions seem to be directed towards the Extremely Computer Literateare and the lack of innovation in providing easy to use interfaces and significant improvements over traditional alternatives.
A word processor today vs a word processor from X years ago.......? A spreadsheet is still a spreadsheet.
I know I am going to get flamed for this and people will no doubt spout of examples of enlightened girlfriends & colleagues who were brought into the Linux fold and are quite comfortable in it.
For me to have to compile something (in Linux) to install a program is utter and complete non-sense.
I know many people who just manage to send e-mail and barely browse the web in Windows.
The Source Code is irrelevant point refers to people like them, and me for that matter I think its cool that If i really wanted to i could see how everything came together but I really don't care, and neither does Joe Blow or Mary Smith.
Linux Users & Computer guru's etc are in the extreme minority of computer users. Computers are designed by Computer people for computer people NOT for the Average human being. I think some people would be better off with Geos or some other restrictive GUI simply because all their choices are right there infront of them.
I know many people who are better off with a Windows 3.x or DOS based system. Even if it is text commands there is a clear progression from point A -> B instead of having to sort through various menu's and procedures in a GUI.
Does your mother need a 1ghz+ processor? Probably not. Most people only:
surf the web, write letters, do homework, and research school projects, etc.
Basic chores that you can do on most 3 year old system (and some older ones too, depending on OS)
The average upgrade cycle seems to be 2-3 years, depending on finances. People who bought a computer 2 or 3 years ago had a Pentium with 16 or 32 megabytes of RAM with all they need to get onto the Net, type their letters etc.
The only reason average consumers had to upgrade their computers was because of the Internet. Few people watch DVD's on their computers (how many of you have larger TV's than monitors), few average consumers do video editing on their computers. Yes people burn audio cd's, but any P200 with atleast 32 megs of RAM can do that easily.
There is no reason for people today to buy a new computer. The reason Intel decided to make their processors so scalable was to make it seem, Gee that P4 is 10 times faster than your lowly P200, you obviously need a new one.
MHZ itself is the biggest marketing scam of all, not the PR rating.

when you said
3) "I am (26yrs)."

A company addressing the needs of its non-technical employees and discovering they weren't up to the task of a more complicated environment than Windows is a reasonable post, there is nothing flamebait'ish about it.
That usability survey that was up on/. a few months back illustrates the same thing, that many many people are not ready for Linux. Linux is not for the massess yet, and when it directly impedes productivity in a certain area of the business because the users are unable to use it it should be removed because productivity is the key to any business.
Someone else posted that these non-technical people should be fired? Just because someone can't grok linux doesn't make them a useless employee.

They were only offering their FREE support for that list of Operating Systems.
They aren't forcing anyone to NOT run Linux, they are saying, well if you can't set it up yourself, we won't do it for you.
This is totally reasonable and I really think your blowing things out of proportion
I agree that Slashdot does need some Entertainment content, its just part of a well rounded site. But is Jon Katz the right person for the job? His 'reviews' of movies (His Book reviews are much better in my opinion, as he actually seems to dig a bit) are often no more informative or exploratory than the trailer of the movie itself.
Maybe in this category the focus shouldn't be on quantity (1 bash and 2 reviews in 1 post) but on quality.
I'm sure there are plenty of other people who would be able to submit quality movie reviews. As discussion of these 'mini reviews' degenerates quickly into, shallow "I liked it", or "I didn't like it" discussions. A more thoughtful approach may be required.
Do you see Plex86 as being a product that would allow users to make a more comfortable migration from other operating systems? Which would in turn make it easier to increase the Linux user base. How does this compare with a comparable level of exposure to TV?
I can't imagine that watching TV would be more helpful than playing a video game where atleast some thought was required.
