As DJ I used to store all my vinyl on CD as backup. I've once used my cd's for over a year in hard-dj-labor and most of them did survive although I might add:

    • In Belgium we got the CD tax, preventing "good" cd's from being imported to Belgium; yup; we officially only got crap!
    • The recording industry sure likes this degration in material, preventing "good" long term copies being made of their products.
    • I've noticed a few differences the last years; most specifically: in quality!
      • BASF Ceram Guards; used to be the best with ceramic protection and perfect dye: production stopped. No degration at all.
      • Hi-Space Carbon Sound; black PS2 compatible cd's, work perfect and scratch free: not available anymore. No degration at all.
      • Verbatim CD-2 52x; They are good, just don't use them too often; very fingerprint sensitive! Degrades after a short time!
      • Maxell CD-R80XL colour; These seem to be scratch friendly, quite good but degrades after some time...
      • Verbatim Super AZO Crystal DL+; These fail more than ever! I do not know why they sell these!
      • MMore CD-R80; As long they are stored well, they will store data for longer times, not expensive either!
      • Sony CD-R Supremas; those cd's fail by the dozen; I'll be glad I will be through this stock.
    • These cd's get used on Plextor, Sony and Masterlink ML-9600 cd writers.

  15. raw editing is not a PC limitation ... it's the OS on Getting a Classic PC Working After 25 Years? · · Score: 1

Raw editing of your hard drive can be done with any simple bootdisk with the flavor you like: Linux, DOS or Windows.

This is a pure OS limitation because of buffering etc..

Windows changed a lot because it used to be multi-threading instead of multi-tasking; which needed some buffers to keep the speed up.
A single tasking OS like DOS doesn't need such heavy buffering because it's not doing any multi-tasking.
Newer drives also have buffers on its print for the same sake .. pure speed ..

There used to be different shareware BBS's around; connected through Fidonet and alike; as well BBS's with a sh*tload of electronic schematics ready to be used towards real world applications. There were shared filelists inbetween BBS's, multinodes, chats and gatewaying to other systems ...

We used to know which BBS to call to get which information. Sysops were almost 24/7 ready to chat with their users. There used to be RIP, Ansi, Ascii ready to entertain the user. Internet e-mail was not a problem and was delivered 8 times a day through a mail gateway (through polling).

We got this now with live nets, forums, msn and other systems; it's more centralized; but do mind the world of BBS is a heavy pioneer when the Internet wasn't ready available for others. There are millions of sites out there, maybe a few thousand really interesting to read. It's not because everything is easier to find (centralized), it must be of more quality ...

Trying not to forget an age which had great potential is not always that bad... and, if you rather look well, lots of sites act like a BBS now-a-days.

A serious annoying problem for the /. dev's to look at ? Anyone else has this problem? It sure diminished the quality of easy reading on slashdot.
