I didn't see any problems on any of the company/outbound servers I'm working with out here in Europe.

Still, assumption is the f*ckup of mother nature; never just assume or your systems could be down a week later.

Whenever I hear a disk chirping I'm yanking the alarm bell immediately for further attention; same for fans failing or anything else.
I don't just assume it's going to be allright just because ... it would cost me my neck.

I've used to have a nasty bug with my linux systems rebooting every random x day(s) about a year and a half ago; it annoyed me for a week till I downgraded the kernel and gone the problem was. It was a conflict between the new kernel, existing modules and bad libraries .. By fixing the kernel I found out the other problems as well. It's running perfect since then... I just don't assume it's going to be allright while the behavior is abnormal ..

Moral for me - always be cautious when things happen differently than otherwise because that might be the start of (many) other trouble as I had with 2 systems before...

The pizza box works sometimes. I've got a dump here of mainboards, graphics cards and other stuff; they didn't die on the pizzabox but before.

    My three holy rules:

    • I'm aware of statics and will always touch ANY ground before I'll open a case
    • When working in my workplace, I'll be touching a ground continuesly.
    • I'll be always using an antistatic sheet under the mainboard.
    • Not a holy rule but just an advice to anyone who reads: testers can be holy too! They save time sometimes with hours.

Had a few times a bad PG every 4-5 restarts of a PSU which drove me crazy until I've used a tester .. You will have to pry it from my dead cold hands !

Look at the prices like everything dropped ; budget cases won't have high-quality PSU's.
Over the last 10 years it was needed to replace every PSU in every case to a higher grade PSU in our cybercafe and office.
Most problems started at the PSU, of some which even made a professional Martin smoke-fog-machine jealous!
Some were even that witty to kill a videocard together with a few other components...
Of all of these PSU's the soldering is awfully done; some PSU's even died just because of bad soldering connections!
Best is to not mix pizza with electronics .. it just doesn't look good all that green&blue with red sause! ;)

I've had 2 SilentPSU's from Yesico before, they were "ok" but not perfect at all.

    • Both of them died "silently" .. left a nasty aftershock too; this for a very known brand silent PSU in Europe. Reason? They just ran too hot...
    • I'm running a cybercafe for over 10 years where we've had a lot of dead fans & PSU's.
    • Generally the rule of thumb is whenever you buy a case: either replace it or face the wrath in 2-3yrs maximally.
    • If you are lucky, only the PSU is dead;
    • when unlucky; your graphics card or other components might be fried too!

Be aware, your silentpsu might still do the same while thinking different ...

Over the 10 years we've had to replace EVERY case PSU we've bought and we've had many cases in stock ;) and we've had to replace only a few of the higher price range.

Maybe it's superstition although I've had best result with the high range series of Chieftec; they even got a supersilent PSU with large fan which is as good as the SilentPSU for me.
I'm only hearing my pump of my watercooled system and that's about it .. bliss compared to these vacuum cleaners nowadays!

  8. what would that matter? Eats up space ... on Study Finds Hundreds of Stolen Data Dumps · · Score: 1

It wouldn't matter to these people because:

    1. It would eat up a lot more space to capture raw data instead of filtered data
    2. They seem to be interested only in identity, not the rest
    3. It's size wouldn't show up as fast on a NOC radar or through a hacked user account
    4. They would need more time to transfer these collections of data
    5. More data requires more diskspace (and often too cpu)

They are working as optimized as any respectable server administrator or programmer would think like; maximize the required information while minimizing resources.

I've found such collection point myself on a customer server before; it would appear more to me these points are being distributed to a central authority which combines all this data and sells it in wholesale prices at the black market. The software I've found to rootkit that server was astonishing; together with the little bit of data it already collected over the 3 weeks the customer has been running the server with 3 rootkits, unknowingly.

It has come to his attention as soon as his disk space was running out without adding extra projects to the server; imagine if that server would be collecting RAW data instead of filtered...

Life imitates art; everything is created by mankind; only one has to jump on the bandwagon to start with it before it'll be accepted or rejected.

The world is full of ideas too, it's just how and when. I'm 32 and i've been a very early adopter for a lot of computer and audio-visual technologies. The only one thing that REALLY changed is: things got a lot cheaper thanks to SMD components, less reliable too! It has been converted to the ultimate throw-away-society where that piece of plastic is nothing worth than a re-sale.

I can still remember the first C64 I touched, the first Amstrad PC1512 I've had with 4 gray"colors" and funky speaker with volume control, my TRS-80, thrilling experiences with Basic, Turbo/Borland Pascal and Asm, my first modem and bbs system and much more.

I've been thinking lately for a lot of applications and tools which don't exist .. yet .. and why? We're in 2008..
The market is becoming saturated, which sure gives the wrong impression technology has come to a halt; it has just slowed down a bit because there is just too much to buy! People don't know what to choose anymore; which is per-se not a bad thing for versatility in selection.

Too many people think too "digital" while there is still a complete wide open analog world ready to explore!

Still, we're in 2008, ages later and still at war. Maybe it's a good thing humanity limits itself from advancing too fast..
As long as some of us can't control our power, we sure don't need the technology to rule such power!
