My experience in PC laptops has been very broad; my last 5 where all Compaqs and the last 2 sucked even more than a webPC would do on a programmers desk regarding heating issues, screen and mobo issues, etc..
I've bought myself a Powerbook in December; asked for a QWERTY keyboard and went to the shop (FNAC) once they told it was in. It seemed the keyboard was an AZERTY keyboard + the right enter sometimes didn't take its hit; so I asked them to order another model with the right keyboard. In January I get a call to get the new Powerbook; went immediately to the store; switched it on, restored my backup; everything looked "ok" to me...
1 day later I get a sudden lockup; like one of the many I get; it just locks up; no cursor movements; the only key that responds is the power key. Not only I've been haunted with this problem for the last 3 months; the machine also spews errors like kernel panics, gray screen-mentioning-a-crash-in-all-languages and the spinning ball of death.
This is my first Apple; have been a PC user for 15 years; I got to say my first Powerbook was a relieve compared to this "new switched" one; although I first have to use it to finish my projects before I can go return it to the shop and loose it for 2 to 4 weeks. I already went to the Apple store with it and they seem not to know about any related problems; a cooling stand does not work (but does cool this powerbook down remarkably; without fans...
To me there are no real advantages to these speeds; since the computers/server is mostly the bottleneck unless you upgrade everything and fine tune you do get some performance out of it; but the price of such full upgrade still doesn't cut it for me...
My "older" PC network runs fluently over my CAT-5 network; fully seperated from the company network using some LEVEL-1 switches; full speed, my network connectivity never goes down. Although still; it goes fast; but when transferring bigger files like my recorded dj-sets it's sometimes a hog.
I guess I can also outrule transferring DVD's with that, but with my cheap mediaplayer that ain't a problem either. A backup is made once a month overnight of this thing; my dvd's are ever-after underused and playing through the network (using OPEN netbios (DUH Freecom!) as extension)
I tried to compare 10/100/1000 differences with a newer PC installed with the intel gigabit networking options, just like 3 of the servers; connected to a gigabit supporting switch to the company backbone. The difference is very minimal; and this talking about ONE pc using an entire switch for itself with 2 servers connected to it (currently as backup network)
Now I got myself an Apple after 15yrs of PC's; it's a relief; only; it does transfer at speeds of +/- 1mbit/s instead of 10 or 100mbit/s so what's going to give me advantage to that (and what's up with that Apple?) and (off-topic) it crashes out of the blue (literally - no screen ; just hanging ; powerkey still works).
... "In my time, we had plugs without protection against children, so we could play with our scissors and knives a galore without being stopped in the act. In my time.. we could plug in stuff under 1 second because the protection is not bending the plugs"...
i guess lack of alcohol does this to someone like me;)
Those vinyl paper inlays are the most fragile you can have in your box of records ; they rip easy, the glue dissolves after a time, leaving you a unfolded 24" cardboard as protection for your vulnerable nude 12" record; to not even talk about when it goed wrong when you try to put the record back in the cover and its stuck *inbetween* the glue lines.
CD covers are stronger, because they are made out of plastic and not paper which can rip in many circumstances; although; I still lack faith in their robuustness protecting their valuable audio as it is price-set today. I found out those soft plastic DVD boxes or those CD covers with a push-the-cd-out mechanism (without hinges) are one of the better/stronger/smaller/more flexible jewel cases out there; although the ones I got do miss some space for a decent inlay.
Those nylon books, I do not know what to think about them, I've got about 2500 cd's stored in such books and I see they do fail faster than they did when they used to be in their original jewel case; probably when you don't move such map a lot you won't get the same problems of wear (and tears for some of my cd's)
In 10 years net neutrality is gone, censoring is in and Uranus will be renamed to Ubehind because children could never live, grow up and the country will never be able to win the war with a terrorizing planet named Uranus.
It's huge.. I've got the HDW-3: Wireless Headset ; also on the same page as that NS26-W ; it looks not only more stylish but it's almost half as small...
I only got 1 problem with it; my headset disconnects suddenly from my 6310i (when phones still where workhourses without too much gadgets) ; unable to find the headset again. The headset switches off every time together while searching.
Batterylife is annoying too; 14hrs standby if lucky and not connected.
There is an advertisement (from BREIN) shouting out "Piraterij is een misdrijf!" (Piracy is a crime!) on quite a few DVD's sold in the Benelux. The ad shows a thief stealing a bike, a purse and a cellphone while showing a girl who started downloading a movie from the Internet. The analogy is completely ackwards and utter bullshit.
To my belief, when copying a movie you break COPYRIGHT laws, but they did not loose any physical DVD's from it by someone stealing it and putting it in his/her pockets; taking it home. This way of not-skippable-propaganda makes me mad, since now, anyone who uses P2P seems to be a criminal in that short advertisement, because, downloading is a crime, because, you are a thief! It doesn't only make you a thief but it also shows you will get a bad image from "stealing" movies.
I've got 4 DVD's with DVD-ROT; the underside is in perfect condition but both movies hang when going to the second layer; 3 DVD's that hang at the MAIN MENU, when pressing "Play movie" it hangs; you need to use the chapter selection to start the movie.
I've downloaded 3 movies and burned them on DVD; since; I've already bought the movies *and* the movies are *ALL* having the same problem. (Fear and loathing in Las Vegas is one of them). Each one of those disks I already replaced at the shop, they all got the same problem (distribution error)? They do cost 12-23 euro / piece.
Ok, it might be me but I've been able to read this article after reloading for SIX times because of a OKI banner overlapping a large piece of text on the site
Next to that, there are THREE banners for the C5800 printer of OKI. Isn't that a little bit over the top?
