  1. Radiohead album a factor as well? on iTunes DRM-Free Tracks Now Same Price As DRM Tracks · · Score: 3, Insightful

I'm curious if Radiohead's Name-Your-Price album prompted the announcement, Apple thinking they could catch a bit of positive press while the anti-RIAA/DRM sentiments are flowing.

    Who knows.

  2. Re:Aren't they ever going to learn? on EA Denies DRM Problems With Sims 2 · · Score: 1

I'm not sure who you deal with on a daily basis, but it's ridiculous to suggest everyone knows what torrent/p2p is and how to use it.

There are many stumbling blocks built in:

    1) Reading files with unknown / unregistered extensions (i.e. .nfo)
    2) Having software to handle RAR files
    3) Windows Explorer competency to copy, rename, replace files
    4) Ability to use common piracy-enabling software (Daemon-Tools, Alcohol, etc.)
    5) Ability to intelligently download and install software in #4 without destroying your computer
    6) Ability to avoid getting trojans / viruses that cripple computer by downloading crap on bogus p2p/warez sites
    7) Ability to manage disk space and other basic Windows management
    8) Rudimentary understanding of firewalls, product activation, serial numbers, and DRM
    9) IP-blocking software
    10) Understanding what patches do, how that effects the cracked/real product, need for these, etc.
    11) Configuring torrent software to download reasonably efficiently
    12) Forwarding ports from the router to the computer, setting up the firewall
    13) Knowing the speed of the Internet connection (Up/Downstream) ....

How many of these can Aunt Suzy who thinks someone must have installed Anti-Suzy software on her computer since it hates her and never works right truly accomplish which might let her have any successful long-run spell of pirating a few applications and handing them out over the years?

Why did that get modded insightful?

    If anything, it's barely "informative".

In the corporate world, using Open Office is like driving an electric scooter. Sure, some people think it's cool because it's not a gas-sucking-Hummer, but it's a piece of shit scooter.

Is there perfect compatibility between business users with Word. and OO? Absolutely not. It's totally unacceptable for corporate use with other folks that use MS Word regularly. Same with Excel and the OO varient. Especially if you're dealing with anyone "higher up" or you consult for folks, or you just want to know your files will be opened successfully, without requiring any extra effort from the person you sent it to.

Reccomending OO because MS Word has a critical flaw makes sense for SOME home users, people who don't share files with MS Word users, etc. But for the most part, it's a bad reccomendation unless you're just using OO like a slightly more advanced Notepad. As soon as you tap into truly in depth MS-Word features, compatibility problems arise. In my experience, all open/free/generic word processors are going to have to be used as glorified Notepads if you hope to attain high quality cross-product/platform compability.

  19. He SHOULD appoint head of ACLU on Bush Admin. Appoints Civil-Liberties Officer · · Score: 1

Why not appoint the guy that runs the ACLU?

    From the ACLU website:

The American system of government is founded on two counterbalancing principles: that the majority of the people governs, through democratically elected representatives; and that the power even of a democratic majority must be limited, to ensure individual rights.

Majority power is limited by the Constitution's Bill of Rights, which consists of the original ten amendments ratified in 1791, plus the three post-Civil War amendments (the 13th, 14th and 15th) and the 19th Amendment (women's suffrage), adopted in 1920.

The mission of the ACLU is to preserve all of these protections and guarantees:

            * Your First Amendment rights-freedom of speech, association and assembly. Freedom of the press, and freedom of religion supported by the strict separation of church and state.
            * Your right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.
            * Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.
            * Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.

We work also to extend rights to segments of our population that have traditionally been denied their rights, including Native Americans and other people of color; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people; women; mental-health patients; prisoners; people with disabilities; and the poor.

If the rights of society's most vulnerable members are denied, everybody's rights are imperiled.

The ACLU was founded by Roger Baldwin, Crystal Eastman, Albert DeSilver and others in 1920. We are nonprofit and nonpartisan and have grown from a roomful of civil liberties activists to an organization of more than 500,000 members and supporters. We handle nearly 6,000 court cases annually from our offices in almost every state.

The ACLU has maintained the position that civil liberties must be respected, even in times of national emergency. The ACLU is supported by annual dues and contributions from its members, plus grants from private foundations and individuals. We do not receive any government funding. Air conditioning, special catastrophe protection, off-site backup system, etc. Just to throw one number out... assuming 110 watt power draw (which is probably conservative) for these power servers that are going to push 110MB/sec sustained 24x7,10,000 servers would cost about $1,200,000.00 / year @ 110 watt power draw with 80% efficient PSUs (assuming $0.09 / kwh as national US average electricity rate). Then let's throw in cooling systems to keep that server room nice and chilly, and at least a few million in wages for the administrators and techs. Another couple million a year in replacement hardware... rental of the building....... The points is, 10K servers isn't just 10K * $2000. It's more like 10K * $7000.
