God has as much to do with this as Zeus.

This whole 'God Particle' term is an embarrassment to science, it sounds catchy but just gets the religious believers excited. Maybe we should've called stem cells 'god' cells, and maybe Bush wouldn't have cut its research funding.

  4. Re:NeoOffice needs X11? on HardOCP Spends 30 Days With MacOSX · · Score: 1

Did you try NeoOffice? You obviously knew that it existed since you 'typoed' it.

It's freeware, and easy to install. And it's definitely better than a 'wordpad' like app. You would definitely be able to type up your article in it.

  5. NeoOffice needs X11? on HardOCP Spends 30 Days With MacOSX · · Score: 3, Interesting

"While AbiWord and NeoOffice are both available through X11, neither had the full functionality that we needed, not to mention that we had a hell of a time getting them to work at all."

If I'm not mistaken, NeoOffice is a native Mac app that is as easy to install as any other, and integrates just fine with the OS. Is the author think of openoffice.org?

Just an FYI, fork isn't always available. The best example I can think of is uClinux, a linux distro for embedded computers. With an MMU, a process cannot be copied, therefore, only threads can be used. This can be a pain in the butt sometimes, but luckily pthreads aren't so bad once you know how to avoid races and deadlocks.

"According to VideoScan, during the first two weeks of January, Blu-ray discs outsold HD DVD by more than a 2:1 margin."

Why does the summary make Blu-Ray sound better by saying it outsold HD DVD by 3:1 in 1 week? Do I detect a bias?

  14. Re:Zune and Sony Atrak and WMA? on Norway Outlaws iTunes · · Score: 1

AAC is not open, and neither is mp3. To sell a device that supports either, you have to pay a fee, since they are patented. Ogg Vorbis on the other hand, is an open format. Anyone can use it any way they want, for free.

  15. Re:Sometimes I hate living in America Jr. on Canada's Music Lobby Buys Government Access · · Score: 2, Informative

Quebec is terrible with rights. It is illegal in Quebec to put a sign outside your business in anything but the official language, French. Even if you live in a town where everyone speaks English, you HAVE to use French signs. If you want an English sign too, it's writing must be half the size of the French sign.

You cannot get a job as a civil servant unless you speak French, even if it's a job where no French is required. It is very difficult, and sometimes impossible, to get government forms in any language but French, despite the large English population. If you are an English family, you must send your kids to a French school, unless you went to an English school in Quebec as a child.

    It goes on...

    Quebec supports rights, my ass!

Ya, I hate it when people assume that those 200k people somehow deserve their jobs. If you make widgets for a living, and someone appears that can make widgets just as well and as fast as you, but needs less money, you're out of your job.

In Tim Harford's "Undercover Economist" book, which I recently read, he gave a great example.

Did you know that instead of manufacturing GM cars in Detroit, you could grow Toyotas in Iowa? There's this new technology that just became available! You put a bunch of corn on ships, send those ships to this new technology called "Japan", and we receive back Toyota cars! It's amazing!

In other words, if you oppose free trade, and support protectionism, you're a form of Luddite. A change in the programmer job market is not much different than a change in technology.

Even with debit, can't the blind consumer still be scammed? He can't verify the amount he's paying by looking at the debit machine, or read the amount on the receipt he's signing.

Don't forget that when children get hurt, they often recover much quicker and more fully than an adult would with a similar injury. Evolution has created children to be more 'durable' than adults, for whatever reason. Kids need to get hurt and do stupid things, it teaches them what NOT to do in the future. When I was 8 I tried doing something stupid on the monkey bars, got hurt, recovered, never tried it again.
