  1. Re:One Time Activation- Who cares??? on Half-Life 2 Retail to Require Steam Activation · · Score: 1

Its still only a one-time steam session unless you plan on playing multiplayer...

Why is it bad? It only has to do it once. Steam has no spyware.

Why are your only options to steal or not play at all? Can't you install HL2, create your steam account, then turn steam on offline mode?

What the hell makes you think stealing the game will be ANY easier than purchasing HL2? With hacked software you never know what they took out and what they did not. For all you know it could install spyware itself.

Its a ONE-TIME activation folks. Don't have an internet connection? Have a restrictive connection?

Just take the bus to Wal-Mart and pick up an AOL CD. Yes, it takes a credit card/debit card to install.

Once you're connected, install Half-Life 2. Once it's done, cancel your AOL subscription and enjoy your shiny new coaster.

Yeah, its awkward and takes time. But that's what you have to do if you want to play HL2.

Stop acting like its the end of the world. You activate once, and that's it. No more steam.

Powerplay died awhile back, it was too broad of a scope with little actual substance to back up its claims.

Steam on the other hand, is an immediate benefit to Valve. At $50+ a pop, with millions of counter-strike players worldwide, Valve is looking at a huge profit. Its been proven to be able to sell games (condition zero) as well as handle a hot new release (cs:source beta).

The ds is a cool concept, but the handheld market really caters to kids. The gameboy advance, with a cheap price and cheap games will still be more popluar among kids because they are half the price. For christmas, console systems are the same price as the ds, and many kids(read: parents) will choose the $99 gamecube (with metroid prime, the FULL game), or $150 ps2/xbox over the ds. If your kid drops the ds, you're out $150. I hope this thing comes with a parent's guide because: -it has a touch lcd screen which kids seem to love to hammer on. -kids tend to want to use a regular writing device on a touch pad, like a pen or crayon. So its wireless. Can you not use them on planes? Now, if you can hack them, the possibilities are endless.

As for the network guys, you have no idea exactly how the source theft took place and how long the theft was discovered after it occurred. I see the real benefit in this lies not in making existing wireless cheaper, but in expanding the reach of wireless by allowing it to be in places that would not normally be covered. Think waiting rooms and fast food restaurants. The business sees a benefit without cost, the user gets free wireless. And of course, if the ads get to you, you can go to a place that provides their own wireless access without ads.

Rent the DVD if you don't believe me. I can't speak for every movie, but I know it can happen in a theater.
