  1. Particularly on the DS? on Ubisoft Working On a New Anti-Piracy Tool · · Score: 1

They blame piracy for their awful shovelware DS games not selling? Are they crazy? I think the market has just hit the limit of how many ANIMAL/ACTIVITY-z (like Catz,Babiez, etc) titles it can take.

  2. XP? Vista? 2000 for me on Vista Shipped On 39% of PCs In 2007 · · Score: 1

While I've been strong armed into running XP on some of my machines for hardware/software compatibility, all of the older computers I have are running 2000. In my mind 2000 is simply the best version of Windows made, bar none, it's got a low footprint, runs on nearly anything at decent speeds and isn't all "macified" like XP/Vista are. I've looked at 2003 but it's intended server use makes it a little less desktop friendly especially on older hardware. What I would really like Microsoft to do is release some sort of basic FLP style version of Windows to consumers, it's not just businesses using older hardware, in my mind if the machine works it can be used for something. I have tried Linux in the past but it just didn't click, same with MacOS, theres just always been something about Windows that I like, something I don't quite feel with Vista.

  3. Ubuntu on Laptops on Walt Mossberg Reviews Ubuntu · · Score: 1

I tried Ubuntu on my laptop about two months back and while I thought it was certainly an improvement over the RedHat days of yore I still ran into some issues that irked me. I wanted to use KDE but the wi-fi applet had some inane issue. There was a work-around but I wasn't in the mood to jump through hoops. I switched to Gnome and the wi-fi issue went away. Audio was a whole world of fun. I couldn't for the life of me get the built-in laptop speakers to work only headphones or external speakers. I googled the issue for my model of Realtek "sound card" and found reference to it but not a clear cut solution that worked. I downloaded the latest drivers from Realtek and I think I got them to compile right but I'm not really sure. The driver setup was an ugly mess, I was looking for some sort of unified driver install applet or tool and for the life of me couldn't find one. Windows for what it's worth is very good on this. The other thing that I troubled me, and this is ironic, was that I thought it was holding my hand too much. To install applications and codecs all I had to do was pick them from a list and everything was done for me. While this is nice for a new user I like have some idea of what the hell is going on in my system. I know I'm being mean here, but another issue I have always had with the Linux is compiling everything. I am willing to give up some performance for the ease of just being able to download a file anywhere I damn well please and run it. I know this isn't secure and it doesn't fallow a neat directory layout but in the end it's my computer. So in the end I'm still on Windows (XP, Vista is as bad as ME imo) but I will keep checking up on Ubuntu, perhaps by 2009 enough of the general kinks will have been worked out and OEM support will be better.

  4. What sort of format will the books be in? on Google Working To Make 'iPod/iTunes for Books' · · Score: 1

I hope they use an open format with little or no drm. I have purchased ebooks from Baen in the past (http://www.webscription.net/) and I love their no-drm html file setup. For reading ebooks I just use my cell phone, it's small and get's great battery life, no screwing around with an ebook device. I use Tequilacat Book Reader, it's a simple, free and excellent tool (http://tequilacat.nm.ru/dev/br/index-en.html). If Baen stuck all sorts of DRM on their books I would be limited to using a small number of expensive and poorly designed devices but since it's just html I can do whatever I want with it, if Google can do something like this I would be very happy. More companies need to follow Baen's example.

Ive been runiing the 1.2 version on my junk pc for over a month now (waon't even complete a linux install, wierd huh?), it really does work, I have no complaints with it what so ever. The Windows 2000 color scheme is kind of goofy but thats my only complaint. I plan to upgrade to 1.5 as soon as possible. Or I may wipe 98 and put the (legal) copy of 2000 I got for $2 on it.
