Your not speaking as someone who has ADD but someone who has seen people like me? Well, I will have you know I get lot of things done while multitasking. Just not in same order, I fix things in chunks and while I get board with one I move to another thing to fix then come back later to the earlier one. Its all about having other things ready to pick up the motivation when the earlier one is dieing off. You seem to indicate the solution to ADD is eliminate distraction. Defiantly spoken like someone who doesn't have it. Yes if I eliminate distraction I can work more like a standard person. If I have to focus on one thing what I have to do is turn music or the tv up really loud so it blocks out all the other noise then I mentally block out the tv/music. But it is in no ways a "solution to add" it is a temporary fix to allow me to work on a single thing at a time. I am in no ways less or more efficient when I do it that way.

If I am doing only one thing I get really bored and quit. I function best when I have a ton of things going on. Email + refershing 3 different forums + irc + /. + gaim + groklaw(loading it always takes forever) + purevolume(playing a band) + RSS feeds coming in + emerge -u world on test machine. I agree completely with your post. I dont know what we can do to change things. I have spent a great deal sitting around thinking about it. Writing letter to congress doesnt help, if you actually get your letter past their staff and to them they dont care. If you dont have a large check attached to your letter they dont care. Despite the best efforts of the EFF it seems like they are having no effect, it just gets worse and worse. The only chance to have any change is to figure out a way to motivate the public, but I doubt the public cares nor understands. If you have any suggestions on what I should be doing to get the word out speak up, but I am at a loss. Our founding father had enough forsight to seperate church and state but not enough to seperate big business and state.

You would be suprised how well some of these servers work. Its not really a issue of reliabity its a issue of name recognition, bandwidth, updates.

Lets say I get a team together and start my own everquest server, and lets pretend eqemu worked perfectly. I start creating storyline, quests, mobs, items, etc. After months and months of development people take notice to my server. As more people join the server starts to lag and buckle under the weight. So you say you want to move to a dedicated connection, and you need donations. You assume people are going to pay but they wont. 99% of the people who play on these servers play there because they dont want to or cant afford to pay these monthly fees so you will probably get only 1-2 donations no where near enough to hold the server. At that point you hit a glass ceiling, to make the server compete you need a dedicated connection and you dont have enough funding. Pirate even ones that run the same code cant compete. Mods for a 3rd person arent really the same thing because a mod is created once and then maybe some fixes and a couple new features, mmorpg worlds needs to be constantly evolving moving forward or people get bored and quit. While there are examples of good large group mods like counterstrike but as I said those modes and mmorpg worlds are fundementally different.

  24. Re:A fair treatment, but I still disagree on Examining Some Open Source Myths · · Score: 1

I disagree greatly. The problem is there ARE alternatives servers to alot of the mmorpgs out there. Some more compatitble than others. Yet the number of people playing on those servers compared to the real servers miniscule. Apparently gamers feel the service offered by the real companies is greater than the pirate servers (even if that means paying the fees). MMORPG makers know people dont want to pay, so they try to cut the price as big as they can, having deals with hardware manufactures and such. Joe Hacker can never really compete with his 2ghz and a cable connection. He is LUCKY to get 20 players.

Then maybe you should get a job. If you are having issues getting money for your work and you are at the point where you either

    A. give up your dream of being a artist full time and get a job and create in your spare time

    or

    B. Continue down the full time artist path and be perma hungry and have to make sacrafices. (eg.. no computer?)

You need to decide if art is really for you. Someone on here said artists are classically poor, if they are poor why do they continue to create art? Why not give it up? They dont give up because they LOVE doing it, if they get money all the better. This really isnt a arguement for or against paying artists, I always try to support artists I like because I wish for them to continue to do what they do, but its not okay to complain about low wages, they decided on which path to take.

Plus I also want to point out I really doubt the artists that are having problems with money would fall into the group thats getting played by the dentists, if they are getting played then SOMEONE is buying their stuff.
