There is something "neat" here. Corvids (crows, ravens, magpies) are the smartest birds on the planet. The fact that they may be smarter (in some areas) that chimpanzees could radically change how we view animal intellegence.
Lots of birds can use tools. However I recall that it is now wildly believed that the kia bird of New Zealand is by far the world's smartest bird. They not only have great independent intelligence but have some amazing learned group behaviours. Unlike most birds that can use tools for a single purpose, kia birds can use tools "stacked" together.
There is another special that shows an octopus navigating a maze on a daily basis. The octopus gets faster and faster each day because he remembers the layout. So the scientists then place moving gates and walls. The octopus quickly learns the timing of these to enable himself to get to the end of the maze (and to the food) in as fast a way as possible.
Octopus are damn smart. Compared with Kia birds they may be the next most underestimated animal on the planet.
I realize that Rob & the rest of the crew just want to post what they're interested in reading
I'm sorry but this argument hasn't held water since they started receiving compensation for the site well above and beyond the normal running costs. As the product (which we are since this is now an AD based, subscription and "eyes on" site) we are allowing ourselves to be exploited by continuining to approve of this behaviour and even encourage it with statements like the one above.
Not trying to single you out, but this argument gets paraded everytime they do shoddy work. All I know is I would never hire any of these guys (asside from Timothy) to work on any of my critical systems. They just don't care enough about their own work.
As a counterpoint I live in downtown SF and I've never had problems like the ones described. Then again my building has modering wiring.
I really don't believe that a real tech from PacBell would give the response "that's normal". If you are getting that from a first level tech support person ask to be sent to someone more senior. Have you actually done any line quality tests during these periods? Or during normal times? All modems can do them now.
It is has been proven that people in tight social circles tend to pick up habits and mannerisms from one another. I wonder if the fact that the slashdot editors are so close, contributes to the generally poor grammar skills they show when posting articles.

To suggest it just formatted your drive is insane.
I wish you would have told that to my 3.0 installation which merrily formated some of my "extra" partitions for me without bothering to ask. It used that to delete an NT and a lunix installation.
The real travesty is that I continuined to try and use the OS for about 3 months after that foul up, despite IBM never being able to explain why it happened. Their best suggestion was that my partition table wasn't "standard".
Bill treated this as he would any media interview.
Have you guys actually heard or listened to any of those recently? Actors/Politicians/Jerks are trained to give as short a response as possible. They know the average attention span of the American person is right around 2.32 seconds.
What you guys think Slashdot deserved some indepth answers to such bland and tedious questions? I mean come the fuck on, the queries weren't even original.
Logic would assume that if birds evolved from reptiles, then the genetic coding for the body parts that they share in common would be located in the same place, and be relatively similar.
No logic doesn't. Especially not once understands how DNA binding actually works and takes a glimpse into all the things that can change that process. Did anyone at your debate mention HSPs? Virus mutations that get auto-corrected? Those that don't? How the location of a string isn't nearly as important as the coding sequence? How much damage a sequence can take and still be effective?
You are creating a logical fallicy and then using that to argue your points. I realize that you are probably trolling but really, please go out and read up on DNA some and not just the often purposefully incorrect information on it passed around by "creation scientists".
Cab drivers don't get a set wage. They have "gate fees" to pay and until they make that during their shift they are in the red the whole time. Once the gate fee is passed everything above that is what they keep. The only reason they can't charge more to get more is because of local fare laws.
Cab drivers have to be pretty good to make a living doing it.
No it is a 192k MP3 soundtrack. Why limit yourself to CDR media? I store some of my DVD movies on big disks that any computer in the house can see. These are ripped for high quality, not trading.
Probably because like most of Europe it is far cheaper to put up cell towers than to have wires run everywhere. Americans tend to forget how subsidized our wired telephone system was.

What kind of blind eye to history have you turned? Remember the apollo missions? The great aqueducts? The great wall? Thousands of years of ingenious dam and levy constructions? Pyramids?
Often times it takes a government to declare something as a goal and to commit to it before it becomes a reality, regardless of the nature (in this case technology).
It runs an apache proxy as I stated earlier. That is it, yes apache has restarted many times in that window. In addition the ssh daemon has been restarted with new version at least six times.
What do you take services down for hours while you update them?
I am all for companies with stupid patents winning out against larger companies. Not because I believe the patent system is defective (which I do) but because the system in place isn't there to protect individual inventors or small innovative companies.
Why do people, on slashdot of all places, lament the troubles a large company will have fighting these stupid patents? Why should we feel anything at all for these orginizations? Does it really matter if some company "steals" some other companies idea and makes a better product out of it? Oh sure on some emotional level it does, but if it gets us, the users/consumers the product cheaper, better, faster so what?
Now of course I know the above argument is faulty but really think about it for a second, when you complain about the patent system... why exactly are you complaining? and for whom?
You just have to be dedicated. I personally have ascended 10 characters out of probably 1-1.5k games of nethack starting from around 1995-2000. After I got 3 valkrys up in a row I stopped playing.
How long will the other editors turn the other cheek?
Seriously someone stand up and explain to us why Michael gets away with these mod down powertrips? How about you Timothy? You seem to be the one really stand up guy around here, hell you even admit when you foul up.
Notice I am not posting anonymously because I want an answer it is worth my karma which Michael has burned off plenty of times in the past to find out why no one does anything about this.
This gets battered around a lot, but Microsoft has a very tiny interest in Apple. When someone tells you "I heard Apple was bailed out...blah blah..." they are probably more than a little confused.
Microsoft's supposed bail-out was an investment of $150 million dollars into a company that had over 4 billion in reserves at the time. Apple still has over 4 billion in "liquid" like investments.

You might want to hold off a couple of years. I have one of the 2nd gen plasma screens (the current new ones are 3rd/4thish) and using it as a monitor pretty much sucks. If you use it at the native res it looks okay, but nothing to write home about. Definitely better than any of the TV-out including the matrox and much better than any of the consoles but the graphics are not sharp. Also the most glaring problem the screens do get burn in AND they have horrible brightness compared to LCDs and monitors.
With that said, the DVD watching and console gaming experience is pretty much second to none. I prefer the screen over LCD projectors.

The phone is already out in a few selected countries and anyone can order the dev version + kit right now.
You can expect it to hit the UK streets sometime mid January... and it does everything the motorola does.
The problem is this thing is going to be fricken expensive SIM unlocked, upwards of $700.
Right now they are selling for $800 unlocked and imported. The dev edition is 1k with kit.
Price will be around $500 or so with activation.
Check http://www.expansys.com/ to find the latest phone stuff for sale.
It will more than likely end up on the p800. The phone is significantly more powerful than your Palm.
