I agree. Unfortunately, mainstream news isn't about news so much as it is about ratings. As long as the masses accept Idol and its ilk as news, I see no changes in the near future.
On a side note, as bad as the national news may be getting, it's still nowhere near the low level of local news. Worthless information and hokey all at the same time...
Whatever happened to Democrats sticking up for things like civil liberties? When do I get my Deomocrat party back from the corps and self righteous?
At the same time I get my Republican Party back from the New Aged GOP that has started supporting Big Government, Business, and Big Spending.
This is a beautiful thing, liberals and conservatives finally agreeing on something......that both parties suck.:)
Also, I'm in total agreement w/ the grandparent post (onyxruby) on our needing a middle of the road party. Don't 80-90% of us fall into the middle? Then why does it seem that neither party represents us? Am I the only one that feels this way?
Sad as it is, I think all of us in the middle need to create a special interest group, as donations and lobbying seem to be the only things that dictate political policy.
Two reasons. First, to build credit. Second, fraud protection. It's my understanding (from what I've read & what I've witnessed) that it's more of a PITA to deal w/ the bank when fraud's involved. It just made more sense for me.
I'm sure glad my sleazy meth-shooting junkie neighbors didn't find that one in my mailbox.
You think that's something. I recently got my first credit card (put it off as long as I possibly could), for the purposes of online purchasing. A few months ago, I received an envelope in the mail full of $500 "convenience checks", an OPENED envelope.
I didn't know that it was possible to have that roller coaster effect on your stomach without actually moving.
Needless to say, a quick call to the credit card company and they haven't sent them since. However, that was one hell of an exciting introduction to the world of plastic.
Sooooo, those pesky rights *should* win out over a law that would violate them, even if most people support the law.
We're in agreement. However, I'm not convinced that this administation & the current Congress sees things the same way. They seem to be rather uninterested in things such as the Constitution & Bill of Rights.
That's why I said that it will take a shift in the values of the majority to stop this slide down the slippery slope. Trust me, you're unlikely to find someone more angry over this (and the administration ) than I, but we don't live in a world where things are as they should be.
You brought up an excellent point w/ the national religion comparison, and you're absolutely right. No arguments here. However, I do find it ironic that the gradual stripping of our rights are being sold under the same logic as no establishment of a national religion, "protection for all". As we're now living in a "safety first" society, they're using the same rationale that gave us rights to take them away. I never realized that before, so I appreciate your making me reexamine the situation.
Anyhow, it's just my feelings on the matter. What do you think?
As I'm a firm believer that any law that can be abused WILL be abused (human nature, after all), I couldn't agree w/ you more.
Unfortunately, part of the deal is maintaining some balance between safety and freedom. I would choose freedom any day of the week, but it seems that many, if not most, are willing to make sacrifices of that nature for safety. Though I don't appreciate MY freedoms being sacrificed for THEIR piece of mind, it's majority rule, my friend. Until the rest of the populace gets fed up w/ moving in this direction (which will probably take a gross abuse of this law or one like it), we're in for more of the same.
Or well, I guess there's a third option to make 99-cent downloads competitive: raise the price of CDs.;-)
I'm not trying to be Johnny Tinfoil Hat over here, but am I the only one who wouldn't be surprised if this is the plan?
Here's what I don't understand (as a disclaimer, I am not a musician):
Why hasn't a group of indy bands joined together to form their own "label", using P2P or their own iTMS variant to distribute their music. Obviously, they wouldn't be able to instantly compete w/ the behemoth that is the RIAA, but over time they might be able to slowly erode the power that the major labels have. If it's a good enough plan for Linux vs. M$, why not for musicians?
The whole thing with the imaginary nympho Cylon "queen" is crap.
The dual storyline back on Caprica is pointless.
It's odd that you specifically mention those two points, as those are two of my favorite parts of the story.
On the first, I particularly liked it (though it looks like they're getting away from it) how Baltar would be in two seperate conversations, one w/ the Cylon chick and one w/ someone else, and he'd respond to both w/ the same statement, which had very different meanings in each conversation. I thought that was rather clever. I'm not sure why she's a nympho, but her being in Baltar's head is part of what makes him so interesting. IMHO, the series would not be as interesting w/o him, though I think they're all great (not enough shows have truly human [flawed] characters).
On the second part, I've been enthralled w/ what's happening on Caprica. The guy's a rat in a maze, and the Cylon's are just observing him, studying him. I look forward to the 5-10 minutes each episode that they cut to Caprica.
How is this insightful and not flamebait? I think it's obvious that you don't know the average smoker's opinion. As a former smoker, let me break it down for you:
Smokers have the right to purchase cancer-causing tobacco sticks at a low price
I wouldn't say the right, but they do unreasonably tax the hell out of them. I used to joke that it's a rip off to slowly kill yourself now a days. I don't know how things work where you come from, but here in Cleveland, our professional sports facilities were in part paid for by a "sin tax" on tobacco and alcohol. Jacobs Field should have been named The Ashtray, b/c that's what paid for it. Of course, if you want to smoke there, you can only do it in certain areas, b/c we don't want to offend the non-smokers. So, we were welcome when it comes to paying for it, but not when it came to using it.
light those cancer-causing tobacco sticks on fire anywhere they want to
You know, I've never met a smoker that assumed they could light up wherever they want to. Apparently "smokers = no manners" in your book. I think you're just being angry on that one.
raise the cost of health care for everyone
I thought it was primarily the greed of the insurance companies combined w/ the fact that most people don't eat right and exercise that really drove up costs. I'll grant you that smoking plays a part, but it seems that the average health of Americans as a whole is going down, whether they smoke or not.
cause cancer in people that are affected by their second-hand smoke
IIRC, I read somewhere the numbers affected by second-hand smoke were statistically insignificant, something like 1 in 6 million or 600,000. It was my understanding that the effects were blown way out of proportion, and that the initial gov't report that the anti-smoking organizations use to fuel their fire was later overturned by that same gov't department (I don't remember which one it was). Just b/c someone yells something over and over again doesn't make it true. After all, I'm still waiting for proof that Iraq was allied w/ Bin Laden.
and shirk taxes that have been levied on products they purchase
So, by your logic, not only do "smokers = no manners", but also "smokers = criminals". Am I correct on that? An interesting point of view, but I'll have to respectfully disagree w/ you.
Again, I don't smoke anymore, and I prefer it that way, but I can't sit idly by and let this obvious flamebait go unanswered. After all, your words: I think that pretty much sums up the average smoker's opinion. I think it's pretty obvious that you don't know what that is...

My brother was telling me about a friend of his that works for GameStop (in the Cleveland, OH area).
Apparently, they were the leading store of N-Gages sold, with 1. It caught some guy's eye as he was walking out of the store, so he decided he'd buy it on a whim. That guy returned it a week later.
So, with one returned unit, that store still had the most N-Gage sales in the Cleveland area.

Another thing that really got to me was that back when it was just TechTV, I could check the interactive TV Guide info and it would tell me what the show was about. After the merge, the info only said "Computers". Meanwhile, all of the G4 shows displayed exactly what brain-dead garbage (IMHO) they'd be showing. I'm not sure if Stern and O'Reilly is a fair comparison.
As far as I know, most people who dislike O'Reilly do so not because of his "outrageousness", but because of all of the spin that goes on in the "No Spin Zone." They dislike the fact that he claims to be objective and unbiased, but is clearly hardcore Republican, as is the "fair and balanced" station that his show is on. If I watch Fox News, my entertainment center leans so far to the right that everything on it falls off. And this is coming from an independent that has alot of problems with both major parties.
Stern's show, on the other hand, doesn't seem to be politically motivated, which is why I question the validity of that comparison. O'Reilly's "outrageousness" may have been the stated reason, but his agenda is why most take issue with him.
