I myself like having two "Home Office" type areas. My actual home office and....my balcony! On really nice days one of the largest benefits for me is that I can grab my stuff and go sit outside. I find myself to be much happier and productive outside. Of course, you need to have an area shaded enough to read a laptop screen.
Of course, you do have to remain disciplined to keep from getting distracted outside just as you do indoors.
Whenever someone tells me they are preparing for the apocalypse, the world economy crashing, or some other catastrophic event by buying up some gold, I highly recommend they scratch that idea and just buy up a bunch of whiskey. It is an item a lot of people will want that can actually be used.
The difference is that the conservatives have the God and wholesome family value add on pack and the liberals have the "But that isn't any good for you. Let me help you to be better..." add on pack. Both ways of thinking lead to slightly different versions of a messed up government.
The company I work for is the US subsidiary of of a much larger Japanese company. We have several colleagues from Japan that oversee and/or work with us. If they want something, we pretty much have to give it to them.... and they are the friendliest and most reasonable people I have ever worked with in my life. They don't really interfere with anyone provided the job seems to be getting done, they let me get away with absolutely anything with regards to my schedule, they trust and respect my expertise, they enjoy socializing within the company (as well as the language barrier allows them)/helping others with problems when they can, and they would absolutely never ask me to do anything demeaning.
Basically they treat me so well that I'd feel like a complete ass hat if I didn't do the best work I can.
I really think you should walk into a few poor urban classrooms. You seem to come from a fairly educated background, so expect it to be staggering. It isn't a situation where you have one or two bad kids acting out with an incompetent teacher. There are loads of kids with some serious behavioral problems. They can't sit still, they can't stop talking, they can't concentrate on the material...a lot of them have some serious problems at home. Tacking on a few more hours of school every week isn't going to help the situation. Having the children get out of their desks yet again when a teacher enters or leaves will be counterproductive to calming them down....that and they don't give a shit about some code of honor you are trying to instill. They certainly won't clean up after themselves. How are you going to enforce it? Give them detention? They won't show up. Kick them out of school? They have to be sent to another. And yes, they'll eventually get cycled back around to your school. The teachers have no way to control their classrooms. No amount of "Training" is going to fix that.
Apple market share for computers is about 14% right now. If 14% of your users are complaining that they want to use a Mac at work just like they do at home, they will pretty much be ignored and considered quite annoying by IT departments.
I think the difference is in what you get out of the box. My first computer was a C64. It had a handful of games and apps and a little blinking cursor. That was it. Today you get a computer out of the box and it can be in the internet inside of five minutes. Any type of program you may want (within reason here)...You can get. Getting someone excited about writing their own program when several hundred examples of the same thing (Only better) can be downloaded within a few minutes. I think I would have had a hard time getting excited about doing any programming had my first attempts been "I am going to create a far inferior version of existing programs."
I've been doing half time telecommuting for a few years now and I actually love (most of the time) how personal and work time change a bit. I can shift my working time around to fit my schedule. Wife is off today and wants to go to lunch? Cool, I'll take a long lunch and just work a bit later in the day. Friends called and they want to slam a few back? I'll work from home that next day and start late. Sometimes I'll have to take a call while I am doing something else once in awhile, but the gains are worth it.
Not to mention I find it a lot easier to focus on all tasks away from the office. The number of times people stop by to say hi, ask a non work related computer question, receive a cold call from a vendor, etc. I deal with while in the office is really high. Almost every time it blows all momentum I had. I try to do all the interacting with people I need to do when I am in the office and do the actual work while out of the office.
The thing is, you just made an assumption that a legitimate course (Art History) is somehow a garbage class. There are a lot of things that we learn about history through art. Unless of course you think History itself is a worthless endeavor.
Our parent company is located in Japan and is much larger than ours. They have some solution in place that basically tracks everything done with the laptop (I have not been able to check it out, I just can't reasonably navigate a computer that is in Japanese). They can't get into the BIOS and the computer won't boot off a USB stick so they don't have any options they like. I'm guessing the GP's laptop will be like that as well. Even their high level executives carry around a personal laptop when they travel. They are usually both in the 12-13" so it isn't a terrible hardship. That is a nice size as it is still small enough to be less than 3 pounds while still getting an i5/lots of RAM instead of an Atom/little RAM of a true netbook. Most try to buy similar models or a universal power supply to have some redundancy there. Why take bizarre chances if the answer is a few hundred bucks and 3 extra pounds in your bag? I would be very concerned if one of the guys at my company started talking about how they do some batshit crazy thing like imaging the drive.
I guess another possibility is you could ask IT about their policy on personal browsing. See if you can hit your favorite sites while traveling. Maybe they would be kind enough to install your Ebook reader software. Obviously, if by "can't not browse the internet" you mean "Like to get my porn on" you shouldn't even think this way.
I don't know, that seems like something that could get really ugly for facebook really quickly. It would be nice while everyone is happy with their transactions, but eventually there will be transactions that go wrong. I don't think Facebook wants to arbitrate "He sold me a PS3 game but it didn't work" over and over again.
I can't imagine my story is too unique. When I got to college I started messing around with pirating software/finding porn. Music trading wasn't too popular yet (drive space issues, for one) but I dabbled. It led me to start learning about things like iRC, FTP, and eventually Linux. Unfettered access to the internet essentially guided me to my current career trajectory. If I had walked into firewalled dead ends everywhere I may have quit trying. A college education is more than what happens in the classroom.
I actually applaud them for trying to forge ahead a bit. They bought themselves time with Windows 7 being a really solid release. They release this repackaged version of Windows 7 with a wacky new interface and see what people think of it. Most of the slight below to average computer users I know will probably like this interface on a desktop. Heck, I can't really rule out the possibility of this being a successful UI model for some manager/sales types in the workplace. The idea isn't that terrible. It is kind of like having linear virtual desktops and virtual desktops are pretty damn cool. If it doesn't work at all for desktops? You have a pretty viable tablet platform (admit it, it does look slick for touchscreen) and four years to write a "Windows 9" as the successor to Windows 7 and the "Normal Windows" model. Not really that bad of a gamble.
Well, there are multiple types of Opioid receptors. Typically you can expect the "Delta" receptors to be the ones that are bound to to provide analgesic effects on a person. The "Mu" receptors are the ones that cause Euphoria and such. Technically, if you are able to "vaccinate" against the Mu and not the Delta you shouldn't have this problem. I think drugs like Bupenorphine (for lower end drug users) basically bind to the Mu receptors without actually stimulating them. Can't remember for sure though.
I did this as well. I got the typical scam Email and started replying. After awhile I started chatting with the guy on an IM program. It was pretty interesting just to see what he had to say. In the end I figured I was best off not messing around with something like that for a few hundred dollars....and as you said I wasn't so sure he'd give me any real money anyway.
The guy actually still contacts me every once in awhile to see if I've had a change of heart.
So men should be able to have sex with random women without worrying about pregnancy impacting their financial situation? Both parties have the opportunity to use birth control. Both parties have the opportunity not to have sex. Both parties are needed to create a child. This woman is going to have to be very responsible for her own actions in the form of raising another human being. It is not right that the man has to either be involved actively in the child's life or passively through child support?
There is a big difference between agreeing to settle shit like adults if things go sour and actually settling shit like adults when things go sour. If you are getting divorced there are likely things that one or both of you are very angry/hurt/disappointed about. It is a lot hard to see clearly when going through bad stuff.
That's not to say it can't happen, I just don't think you can plan for the whole amicable thing.
I have to admit....I thought you were just making crap up about your 40% figure. I went and checked myself. I am just shocked that more people believe "God created humans in their present form, sometime in the last 10,000 years" over "Human beings developed from advanced forms of life, but God guided the process". I mean, divine guidance of evolution can easily square with religion and scientific theory. The sense of awe I feel when thinking about evolution? I can see how one could replace that with faith that there is some greater being orchestrating the madness. I get that. Basically turning the blind eye towards scientific fact? That I simply don't get. The historical figures show these numbers aren't really changing too much either. Yikes.
I'd even go so far as to say you could use any weapon that you *BUILT* from raw materials during your hunt, i.e. sticks, spears, bows, arrows, etc. If you want to "hunt", do it while being like a hunter. Not while trying to act like a special forces marine taking out an oil refinery.
There is a big disconnect from current philosophy here. In most hunting areas you are encouraged to track down animals that you have wounded, or take a shot at animals you see that are clearly hurt pretty badly. Send a bunch of people out in the woods with home made sticks, spears, etc and they are going to fail to "bag" a lot of animals, but they will likely leave a large number of animals with large wounds that will shorten their lifespan drastically. All the conservation education pretty much goes out the window with that thinking.
Not to mention.....killing with a fancy store purchased bow and arrow or killing with a pistol still requires a decent amount of skill. Not sure if you've ever shot with a bow/pistol but it isn't as easy as it looks.
I very much agree with what you are saying. On the other hand, there are people who USE Excel and then there are people who use Excel. At a lot of the places I have worked at/with it seems that there are a few people making all the spreadsheets with the rest of the users simply using them to put data into the cells. The former wouldn't benefit that much from iPad Excel, the latter might.
The occasional local currency is legal as well. Take for instance, Berkshire Bucks
Why would they pray to God for a new vaccine? Vaccines cause autism and are evil!
Regarding the comfortable and pleasant....

The self destructive side of me has finally had his prayers answered! Now to find a hack to cut off the portion control....
