write this as an outspoken atheist in the deep South who was once married to a highly intelligent, educated bible thumping creationist. I stress the "once married" part. So unless your partner is dead or you are a/. zombie, I am assuming the bible thumping stopped short of 'til death do us part?
Just like a nuclear reactor spits out many orders of magnitude less waste than a coal power plant (how poisonous that waste is is a completely unrelated issue, this is just about pure volume). Ergo you would not be very wise to wait for the chemical elements coming out of that reactor - it's just not enough to be used for any kind input into other production processes. The only thing of value you get is the energy. Written by someone who has never heard of a breeder reactor.
We need a small army, backed up by conscription. You know, how we won WW2?
By allowing Germany to fight a two front war, and the Soviets to sacrifice 20 million of their citizens? Good plan we'll get right on that. Your love of conscription speaks of that old anti-war naivete, that if only war were truly horrific enough nobody would start one. For a correction to this belief, please see the sentiments expressed after the invention of the following items: crossbow, rifled guns, machine guns, and of course everybodies favorite nuclear weapons.
Yeah. This country needs more socialism. Well, what it really needs to cut the military budget in half, and spend that money on things that actually help US citizens. You're right, remind me again how well Rome did after they outsourced their military, and bought all that bread and circuses stuff.
and people have thought alot about the philosophies during the 90s that helped clean up the city, and two stand out:
1. compstat. computerized, statistical analysis of crime trends, up to the minute, down to the apartment building and block. this allowed the police brass to stay ahead of trends tactically
2. the broken window theory. which is the point of this entire comment:
Funny, I recently read a book, which stated that the explosion of the prison population and the large number of abortions 20 years earlier were the root causes of the massive decrease in crime during the '90s. Since cities other than NY enjoyed a decrease in violent crime. Anyways, it all about scale, and I have yet to see proof that somebody who takes a mulligan in golf, is more likely to rob a liquor store.
I'm betting Phillip Morris will make the first and last purchase of this wonderful product.:)
Are you kidding? The single entity making the most money off of every pack of cigs sold is the govt. The sacrosanct S-chip program is paid for by cigarette taxes, the last thing the govt. wants is for people to suddenly quit smoking.
But Sony? What would be the total impact on Sony if their record label arm spun off or died out completely? You're right the record label arm is totally dragging down the highly profitable blu-ray division. Now, all kidding aside, if the consumer electronics part could divorce itself from the entertainment part, then perhaps Sony could go back to making consumer electronics that didn't suck.
Proof that gasoline is still too cheap: I still see tons of Hummers, Expeditions, Navigators, Armadas, Sequoias and other mondo SUVs (aka Urban Assault Vehicles) on the road. Using that poor logic I could say that despite increases in prices, college education is too cheap since enrollment rates at colleges are still at an all time high.
If you're serious they know, I worked at an auto shop for a while. It was always obvious which cars belonged to weed smokers and which didn't. Due to all the pizza boxes and empty Doritos' bags?
Yes, quite bizarre. It's almost as if we value human life more than our ancestors and predecessors. Or perhaps we are so risk averse, that humans will soon look like turtles carrying little nerf cottages on our backs so nothing can harm us. slaughtering every woman and child in the heathen city we just conquered because they were, well, heathen. Oh really?[insert picture of owl here]
Then perhaps you should stop advertising your 'federal republicanism' as 'democracy'.
Talk about 'bait and switch'. Sheesh. I'll get right on that after I convince the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to change their name.
Yanks: DO something about your electoral system! It's time to move back to Democracy from Corporate Oligarchy.
Person who refers to Americans(ie People from the United States of) as "Yanks" read about the U.S. constitution and the Federalist Papers we were never a democracy, instead a Federal Republic.
This is a most bizarre case of symbiotism. Ahmadinejade is pretty much an idiot (see no gays in Iran comment) who doesn't really have all that special of a record. Is he a threat to world civilization, probably not. Not to Godwin too quickly, but similar sentiment was expressed when a corporal turned wall paper hanger gained control of a govt. in the early 20th century. Sometimes it is easier to nip these things in the bud, and other times you just make something worse.
and yes, you can have a copyright on intellectual property, written or recorded material is not "imaginary" or fake or in any other way any less real than any asset.
[sarcasm]Brilliant! I propose a new "intellectual property" tax to help fund the enforcement of this particular piece of legislation.[/sarcasm].
Basically, if you are operating a Wi-Fi service, and find out that one of your users is downloading or uploading child porn, you are responsible for reporting it. What part of that is controversial? The controversial part is how does joe coffee shop owner monitor every packet that may or nay not leave his premises, what if someone uses a VPN and the free wifi to download child porn? It becomes a tangled mess very quickly.
One more thought - your elitist classist statement turns my stomach. people like you are what's wrong with capitalism. Here's one more thought your sanctimonious statement turns my stomach. People like you are what's wrong with/. Isn't name calling fun?
But, then, I consider it more important to be able to live with oneself than to merely live (be it oneself or one's country). Well, guilt is a luxury of the living. So with that attitude you won't have to face that.
http://www.altiva.fr/ The US should get the fuck out, and pay reparations for the damage it's done Hmmm, haven't you French learned that reparations after a war typically doesn't end well? And you didn't answer my second question which is what happens in five years when the chaos is worse?
depending on your genre it may just be some women scantily clad, You say that like it's a bad thing. Or did you think the artist wrote the song to impress his mom?
They're resisting an occupation, it is not just their right, it is their DUTY to resist a foreign occupation.
Don't like it? Just get the fuck out. Wow, that's remarkably short sighted. So the US should just get out and leave Iraq to splinter into three different countries? I guess in 5 years when the dust settles all will be right with the world then?
But, to resolve that problem you'd have to go at least as far back as the Iran coup of 1953. You stopped short, you would need to go back as far as the fall of the Ottoman Empire at the end of WWI.
Also anyone trying to restrict rights generally comes from the right wing in this country (ex. Joe McCarthy).
I'll let FDR's ghost know about that.

+10 bonus points for the "So I married an Axe Murder" reference.
