    Just like a nuclear reactor spits out many orders of magnitude less waste than a coal power plant (how poisonous that waste is is a completely unrelated issue, this is just about pure volume). Ergo you would not be very wise to wait for the chemical elements coming out of that reactor - it's just not enough to be used for any kind input into other production processes. The only thing of value you get is the energy.
    Written by someone who has never heard of a breeder reactor.

    By allowing Germany to fight a two front war, and the Soviets to sacrifice 20 million of their citizens? Good plan we'll get right on that. Your love of conscription speaks of that old anti-war naivete, that if only war were truly horrific enough nobody would start one. For a correction to this belief, please see the sentiments expressed after the invention of the following items: crossbow, rifled guns, machine guns, and of course everybodies favorite nuclear weapons.

    and people have thought alot about the philosophies during the 90s that helped clean up the city, and two stand out:

    1. compstat. computerized, statistical analysis of crime trends, up to the minute, down to the apartment building and block. this allowed the police brass to stay ahead of trends tactically

    2. the broken window theory. which is the point of this entire comment:

    Funny, I recently read a book, which stated that the explosion of the prison population and the large number of abortions 20 years earlier were the root causes of the massive decrease in crime during the '90s. Since cities other than NY enjoyed a decrease in violent crime. Anyways, it all about scale, and I have yet to see proof that somebody who takes a mulligan in golf, is more likely to rob a liquor store.

    Are you kidding? The single entity making the most money off of every pack of cigs sold is the govt. The sacrosanct S-chip program is paid for by cigarette taxes, the last thing the govt. wants is for people to suddenly quit smoking.

    You're right the record label arm is totally dragging down the highly profitable blu-ray division. Now, all kidding aside, if the consumer electronics part could divorce itself from the entertainment part, then perhaps Sony could go back to making consumer electronics that didn't suck.

    Proof that gasoline is still too cheap: I still see tons of Hummers, Expeditions, Navigators, Armadas, Sequoias and other mondo SUVs (aka Urban Assault Vehicles) on the road.
    Using that poor logic I could say that despite increases in prices, college education is too cheap since enrollment rates at colleges are still at an all time high.

    This is a most bizarre case of symbiotism. Ahmadinejade is pretty much an idiot (see no gays in Iran comment) who doesn't really have all that special of a record. Is he a threat to world civilization, probably not.
    Not to Godwin too quickly, but similar sentiment was expressed when a corporal turned wall paper hanger gained control of a govt. in the early 20th century. Sometimes it is easier to nip these things in the bud, and other times you just make something worse.

    Basically, if you are operating a Wi-Fi service, and find out that one of your users is downloading or uploading child porn, you are responsible for reporting it. What part of that is controversial?
    The controversial part is how does joe coffee shop owner monitor every packet that may or nay not leave his premises, what if someone uses a VPN and the free wifi to download child porn? It becomes a tangled mess very quickly.
