    I mean is this not a bit too ridiculous. (Esp if the inaccessible file is someone's personal outdated webpage). If it is anything useful(to a hacker or other persons involved in illegitimate acitvity) then the technique will most probably fail.
    I am not saying that there is no vulnerability (the get data from search snippets is a good idea), but the third option I just quoted above seems to be pretty lame

    By that you mean vi , vim, gvim, vim for windows, vim in estonian or any other flavor of vi, Right ??? :)

    There were real geniuses who also had this type of ability (like that Indian guy who derived millenia of western mathematics and more on his own who could also do the things this savant could do. Was his name Ramujan? Something like that).

    Ppl like Ramanujan or Einstein are genius for sure. Savants have extrordinary abilities but they are not what we would normally call a genius (thinking ouside the bun ..Ooops I meant the box)

    You also have to consider that you can invest the cash and pretty easily get a 10% or so return on it.

    Dude , what do u do , 10 % returns ... dont tell me you invest in M$ shares , I consider myself lucky if I get a 2-3% return (Which is why I guess I need to live on $1 burgers and free pizza in our school.

    I dont think so. First of all, 911 is not an emergency number everywhere in the world. For example in may countries 100 is the emergency number. And 100 (at least with my provider ) links me to the directory service or something. So we would need to select the blocked numbers based on the country of residence. Which jest means more complications. And ofcourse ppl might want to use the computer as an emergency service (Not with MS Win though ;)) , like dial 911 if the microphones in your yard detect a shotgun going off or if your paranoid enough , no one refreshes the /. page for 15 mins (in case of a kidnapping or something u know)

    I wouldnt be too worried about this though, since we are talking about Google here (though it doesnt harm to be safe ... I am downloading my copy of wikipedia now :) )

    Doesn't this sound too much of a publicity stunt (both for USC and EA sports). I mean I am under the impression that anyone with a reputable CS degree (and interested in games) should be a good hire for any game company.

    And from the student's point of view isnt a 'game degree' a bit to specialized and restrictive. I mean I was really really sue that I wanted to be game developer when I was in hight school but 4 years later I realized that there are many other interesting jobs I could do. Any way thats My $0.02

    On the other hand, less smart people, like those who upgrade from Windows 1.0 to Windows Longhorn religously because MS told them so, are usually well trained to follow a certain set of rules, so regardless of the pressure/threats/deadline, they know only one thing - "Follow these procedures and policies and I'll be okay".

    Well I dont know. Those who upgrade to Longhorn from Win 1.0 may be 'followers' with 'average intellect' but if I still see someone using Win 1.0 I know for sure that he is NOT smart (unless of course he has a 8086 or 286 based system :) )

    What i want is a cell phone in the shape of one of those old rotary handsets... just the handset, not the base with the dial on it. Nice heavy feel in your hand. Small enough where it wouldn't be a complete pain in the ass to carry it around, but still bizarre enough to be funny.

    Apple .. r u guys listening. Maybe a cell phone version of the iPos scroll wheel (It might just be too cool you know)

    But, in fact, the user experience of performance hasn't improved much over the past 15 years

    Now that really depends on what you would call 'user experience'.
    Compare a file manager 15 years ols (PC Tools had one right .. for DOS) to the KDE/ Gnome file managers (Ok MC looks the same still :) ).
    Compare pine to Thunderbird.(though I still use pine on my old laptop :) )
    Compare Usenet clients or say Lynx to Firefox,
    Compare Doom 3 to Pac Man .
    Comapre the fancy graphics on OS X to Win 3.1 or whatever OS Mac had then

    No Sirrr I say the user experience of performance HAS changed. Maybe not directly proportional to the Proceessor speed increase (due to code bloat ?) but still its much much better. Thats my $0.02 .

    Putting on my skepticism hat, I ask : Is this a cheap publicity stunt by a group of under talented people who hate PublishAmerica ?? They get to slander PublishAmerica and surprize, thanks to all the cheap publicity , people start wondering hoe their book is , and pay 11 $ for a piece of worthless carp . Its disgusting.

    Opps, I'll continue this later, Now let me hurry and order the book before its sold out.

    Micorsoft doesn't compete with Apples Ipod, why would anyone at Microsoft care?

    Yeah , right. Its just a coincidence that most (and I think all) other music players use MS based software and run WMV files (which the iPod doesn't).
