I live in Washington DC, and yes I suppose $30 was pushing it, but it is still quite expensive. I just want to watch a movie and ENJOY it, I don't want to get aggravated by telling people to be quiet or having to tell a manager, I just want to watch a movie in peace.

I usually end up going to some kind of live performance (like a play) if I have a date, and it usually doesn't come out to be much more expensive, and IMHO it is much more fun.

Let me see, which would I rather do: spend $30+ on a movie ticket, popcorn, and a drink just so I can watch the latest subpar selection of movies at a time set by the theater and have popcorn thrown at me by 13 year old cell phone wielding children, OR pick up whatever movie from the redbox for $0.99 (or DVD rentals through the mail) and a drink and popcorn from the local store all for less than $5 and watch it on my widescreen in the comfort of my own home. 11. Annoying People != $$$ on Does Adblock Violate A Social Contract? · · Score: 3, Insightful

The thing advertisers don't seem to get is that you don't sell products by annoying the hell out of people. Pop-ups, pop-unders, floating ads, the all singing all dancing flash ads, anything that blinks or wants you to answer a trivia question, ad infested web pages that have half a page of text and require you to hit the next button to continue to the next page. These are all ANNOYING, that is why people are blocking or otherwise avoiding them.

You don't see people going to extreme lengths to block Google text ads. Why? Because they are fairly unobtrusive, yet still visible enough for people to see them.

If advertisers don't want me using Adblock they should use small, unobtrusive, static images and I will happily turn it off. But until then, they can whine and complain all they want. Just my two cents...

  12. PB&J vs. Technology on Court Denies Smucker's PB&J Patent · · Score: 5, Insightful

I don't see what the big interest with this case is. I think the only reason it is getting as much publicity as it is, is because the general public actually understands the patent. The prior art is clear: ravioli, pierogies, pirags, etc.

There are software patents being passed that are 100 times more ridiculous than this, yet you don't hear much about it outside of Slashdot or some short blurb in the tech section of the NYT.

Most of these software patents are just as absurd as patenting a method of making a PB&J sandwich, often worse. A "System and method for creating, processing and managing educational content within and between schools," I mean come on, or a "method and system for processing input from a command line interface."

I wish the general public would realize the ramifications of software patents like these. It is essentially re-patenting the wheel.

I really hate steam and the direction in which video game distribution is headed, it's the whole reason I refuse to buy games like Half Life 2. I would be willing to pay a little extra if I got a nicely packaged product with a large dead tree manual and the reassurance that I will be able to play it years down the road.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next generation of consoles use a steam like system as well, ala the Phantom Console. Count me out.
