I have a HTC Universal, and trust me, this thing really does have it all. It's so powerful it can play 700MB XVID movies WITHOUT having to re-encode them like you have to do on almost all other devices, and battery life is many orders of magnitude better than all laptops.
It comes with Skype and MSN pre-installed in ROM usable over wi-fi or 3G, so you can war-drive, chat to your mates, video conference, VNC or RDP into a desktop PC, GPS navigation for your car, hell there is hardly anything this device cannot do.
Why Americans seem so obsessed with these pathetic little Blackberries I do not know - you enjoy your "email" while I have fun with Skype, MSN, IRC, VNC, RDP, etc. at 640x480 over 3G/wi-fi on my HTC Universal.
So instead of putting your OS on an ultra-fast and redundant RAID array, you put it on a seperate single HD which is very likely to be about 5 times slower, "for performance"???
And complaining about "fragmentation issues" for a 3GB OS on a 1TB+ RAID array is like you standing alone in a massive empty warehouse and complaining of overcrowding.
How about doing a review from the perspective of someone who has never used a computer before - then lets see which one is easier to use (hint: the answer will be Windows XP by a massive margin).
This "review" is flawed in so many ways it's not even funny - of COURSE a UNIX nerd is going to hate Windows, and vice versa. In fact it's even worse than the various Microsoft "independant" TCO studies, because at least they try to hide their bias.
Oh come on, why the the offtopic mod? The the parent is commenting on a LEGITIMATE part of the the story, intentional or otherwise - that's NOT offtopic!:P
Not necessarily true. What about the Pentium 4 (willamette)?
When it was first introduced, not only did it get badly beaten by the Athlon in the performance stakes, the 1.4 - 1.6Ghz versions were even slower than the previous generation Pentium 3 coppermine! Plus you had no choice but to purchase extremely expensive and high-latency RAMBUS memory (in pairs).
Was the Pentium4 a failure? No. Because Intel really went to town on it turning up the Ghz and adding loads of cache to make up for a rather slow chip design. And being a monopoly over AMD sure helped, although the Athlon definitely hurt them badly...
There is of course the Pentium PRO, but that does kinda fit in with what you said though;)
... but the RIAA/MPAA lawyer teams don't need to start hiring again just yet.
does the lack of search negate its effectiveness?
I'd say it "limits" it's effectiveness, not negates it. It's not really de-centralized if you still have to rely on sites like suprnova in order to search for stuff, is it? This is a major reason why BitTorrent hasn't completely dominated eMule yet.
But since this removes another potential point of failure in the network (the tracker), it is still a good thing(tm).
Microsoft "working with it's competitors" - that just isn't realistic, it would be kinda like the Goatse man getting a job as a children's TV presenter.
This is what's needed, local councils and the government need to provide investment for both wireless and wired high-speed net access. This way, even the rural areas can get it, how long will it be before prospective buyers of your rural house start to lose interest because of no broadband in your area? It is fast becoming an essential commodity.
And in this case, the fixed-line telcos now have some competition, which is always a good thing(tm).
I guess Gates has found out the hard way that "640k should be enough for anyone" does not really scale very well to 70 million users.
Maybe that's why MSN Messenger has such frequent disconnection issues.
Also, do they have a dedicated team whose sole job it is to run round rebooting all the machines when they BSOD?
Yup, if I saw one at my local supermarket, I'd gladly give up a £1 coin (many UK supermarkets make you put a £1 coin into them as a "deposit") to steal one. For £1, it's a bargain for sure!
Now we have a tool that lists all the filenames the MPAA are looking for, so if you don't fancy getting sued when using P2P, simply rename your downloaded files and use this handy tool to find out if the rename was effective or not. Thanks MPAA!

They have 1 job opening, in India! Looks like all that money spent on lawyers has resulted in "cutbacks" for the rest of the Company...
Yesterday I fantasized about a generator of matter... a device that will assemble any given object from its base, out of atoms.
I also fantasized about a generator of matter, one that was able to generate Natalie Portman right in front of me complete with a handbag full of a strange gritty substance. Ooooh yeah.
You are quite right, add the CIIA (Christmas Islands Internet Administration) to the list.
(for those that don't know, they were responsible for censoring the infamous goatse.cx).

As subject.
You have to endure 2 hours of nagging from Windows before it fucks you?

... is it called pole-vaulting?
He might work for a rival news service (Easynews), but damnit he's right.
Easynews compared to GUBA (and for that matter any other USENET provider) is like driving a porsche compared to eating a fresh, steaming turd.

That gives the term "security by obscurity" a whole new meaning... Hidden text?! What were they thinking!

It should be pointed out that he is certainly not using Mac OSX - but Linux's PPC port (of course). Don't worry - *BSD is still dying. ;-)

Posted only a couple of days ago too.
Timothy do you actually read Slashdot?
... think of Half-Life when reading the headline?
Sounds like that UK TV show, Robot Wars.

If only they had reached the conclusion hinted at in this BBC News article a year or two ago, this would not have happened.
It's certainly bad PR for Microsoft though, perhaps this will serve as a wake-up call to other governments that "other options" are out there.
