First the BBC is not the same as Channel 4, it doesn't recieve anything from the T.V. license and money is raised through commercials. However it does have some broadcasting obligations, like programmes for schools.
Second, although I haven't seen the show, I would imagine it's taking the piss out of I.T. departments. So it wouldn't be aimed at geeks but a much wider demographic.
I have been looking forward to the show since I heard that Chris Morris (well known in the U.K. for 'Brasseye' and 'The Day Today') is appearing as the I.T. manager. I suggest any readers look up these series, because along with The Office & Extras, they are highpoints of British comedy.
Also, while I'm having a bit of a rant check out 'Operation Good Guys' which was a mock-umentary/sitcom made a good time before The Office!
I think you've got a point there, the animated version of Wyrd Sisters (I'm sure that was it), was really good and I think there are just somethings about his novels that animation can capture that live action never could.
Somebody else in the thread mentioned Anime versions, but I think that would be too bland. The animation would need a distinct visual style, like his writing style.
My god, it reminds me of when something similar happened to LOTR, years ago (I think - saw it in a comment on here somewhere) where Producers suggestted Orcs were bird-like and that the Giant Eagles could be used as a plot-device to speed the film up - you know to get rid of that walking nonsense!
It was amusing to read but also frightening that people were considering these changes. Wish I could find the comment and link for more details. Anyway...
If the situation is still like this for DiscWorld then I'd be much happier without any films at all!
I think Watchmen would make an excellent film. It's a fantastic story (I think one of the best - haven't read Thud though) and it stands alone so a wider audience could easily enjoy it.
Although, I would also like to see a film version of Mort made.
Yeah "the 1980's called - they want their design back" was my first thought. I expected it to look really slick, you know at least similar or better than current dvd players, surely that's got to be a prototype shell?
Maybe not where you live, but in the U.K. we have the Disability Discrimination Act where you do have to take into account disabled people when producing things like software and websites.
I find it incredible that you are trying to compare being left-handed to a disability! I'm not even going to waste my time with this.
But it's like Chessington World of Adventures times 10,000! A favourite part of mine was the communications lecture. The cadets were *trained* on how to communicate with mission control by describing various illustrations they were shown.
Lecturer: "What do you see?"
Cadet: "...mission control I can see Rambo and the Fonze doing a hi-five, over."
It's difficult to say which is doing better without up to date sales figures. However it has been shown that the DS has been consistently outperforming the PSP in Japan and generally in the U.K. and France.
I'm not sure about figures in the U.S. but PSP may have a lead. It would be great if we could have total sales figures instead of units shipped from Nintendo and Sony.
Really, they were not so much threatening as embarrassing. When I heard them on the news I couldn't help but laugh. He probably got off because there was no intent and was panicking as the police were closing in on him. Although it's a shame that all the people he scammed will probably never see their money again.
Absolutely, there's nothing shocking here. It should be apparent that the big three are in the latter stages of the product lifecycle. Even Nintendo's Yoshihiro Mori said "...the product's life is nearing its end." As a Gamecube owner I can only see myself making one more (game) purchase.
Interesting. I've seen mentioned on a few news sites that Apple will also be holding an event at the BBC Television Centre on the same day. If this proves to be true maybe Apple has arranged a deal to provide BBC content through the store? I think that would be phenomenal.
He also gives what he makes on the movies away to the artists of the comics, even though he can't really afford to do it.
I don't think I'll be going to see this movie, the Wachowski's clearly don't seem to get it. I respected them after the Matrix but subsequent movies have shown how superficial they are. Making it look cool for the sake of it.
The script has already been slated on AICN. Looks like another League of Extraordinary Gentlemen to me. Poor Alan.
Yeah but does it suck because it's bad or because the Slashdot demographic isn't the intended audience?

Off topic? You shall rue this day... Well go on, start ruing!
Actually, I think I'm doing anime a disservice. It could be done well and I would be interested in seeing the result.
They should have just replaced Death with a talking pie.

Is currently being shown (in the U.K.) on BBC1 on Sunday nights, serialised, for anybody who might be interested.
I just need Taco to re-post and it's bingo!
Why next week? And if it's true I hope they make it a bit less bulkier.
No that can't be right. Don't you mean that they had a lot of disposable income, right up until they bought the ipod? ;-)
Or you could just sign up for a free sixty day trial - even if you don't own a mac!

Unbelivable.

Priceless.
It's certainly possible but not likely. More info on Japanese sales.

Wait a minute, let me see that ::takes off devil's mask:: Steve Jobs!!
Steve: "And I would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling geeks!"

im not sure how more increasingly corrupt you could be than working with the devil.
Huh? Since when has Bill Gates been working with Sony? :-)

Do they need it?
