  3. Re:MS Windows != Every OS on Vista the Last of Its Kind · · Score: 3, Insightful

True, the fact that windows is bloated does not imply that all other operating systems are bloated. But the fact remains that they are.

There needs to be a differentiation made here between "features" in an OS that are required for it to function properly and can't be removed, and the additional programs provided by an OS maker/developer on the installation medium. Not to slam MS too severely, but one reason their future OS's are becoming to bloated is that they (IMHO) are trying to make all these features function on the majority of modern computers without requiring "add-on" software. Examples: firewall and antivirus programs. While I can chose not to enable those "features" in XP or Vista (so I've read), you can't truly uninstall or delete them. The continued addition of such features in MS OSs leads to this "bloat" and worse, because they're tied directly to the internal workings of OS, it inevitably creates additional security holes waiting to be found and exploited.

As for my conservativism, i do think for myself, and found my party to be the one who closest represents my thoughts....the GOP doesn't only represent the rich and greedy....i've got no money in the greedy stock market, I'm not a member of the NRA although I support some of the fight they carry on, although I would like some additional gun control initiatives, but don't take my gun away and finally, I'm two classes short of my B.A. (nearly all night classes after my regular job) so I don't think of myself as some southern hick supportin Dubya....As for political views, why should the federal gov't decide every issue in the country....IMHO, we should be more community (state?) based, so I could chose to move out of a pro-abortion state, or a state that allows or doesn't allow handguns....trying to shoehorn a political agenda on the nation isn't the answer....let folks get involved in local and state politics based on their own beliefs where they could make a difference and make the laws of their community. Let's make the fed gov responsible for a strong defense, international trade regulation, and return all the remaining tax dollars to the states to fund what we as a community see fit, and not necessarily my "conservative" and your "liberal" agenda. I have some disagreement with what you're saying. As an SuSE user as well, I do think linux software installation has to make further strides. If you install off the CD or online via FTP, then most, if not all, the software works without major problems on a pretty modern machine. But as new versions of software comes out, and you try to install of an downloaded RPM, you may still have "dependency" issues and may have to uninstall some other program which uses a different version of a some lib. That's the most annoying thing I've found that still needs work in most all linux distro's, not just SuSE. A new user expecting some type of plug and play (or insert and play) and then advances to the point of trying to install some desired program via RPM and starts getting hit with dep errors will have a steep learning curve not very well addressed in most texts or newsgroups. There are solutions (apt, etc) but we aren't quite there yet.

While the OS is probably fine for the current generation of PDA's, several underlying reasons for this change might exist...first, by using the "free as in beer" linux kernel instead of a non-open source competitor, they might be saving money on licensing costs. Secondly, since the original kernel is already written, the "owners" might not be willing to invest much into new features, whereas funding the development of new features might prove cost effective. Whatever the reason, money certainly comes into play.
