Seriously, that's the third YRO story in a row. It's as if someone had let Michael back online and now he's sitting there, manically posting YRO stories (and laughing his hideous laughter).
The kind of shit you mentioned doesn't need any all-powerful institutions to happen. It just happens. There is no Vast Right Wing Conspiracy (tm) -- just the good old pragmatism and economic liberalism (that's Conservatism in American terms) that have been cultivated for...ages. Oh, and a lot of misinformed public, and some nutcases that shoot people (hey, it's not as if there aren't any nutcases in other countries, you know).
Many Democrat Slashdotters are just hoping for a different version of "selected not elected" for the '04 election.
Unfortunately, their chances of getting their candidate selected retroactively are quite low. So far, all the evidence seems to point that Bush was, indeed, elected for the second term (suck it up!). As far as I know (I must admit that my knowledge is based on what I've read from the press), there's no real evidence of any vote fraud. Even this 'insider' has no evidence of actual fraud.
Innovation: The absence of design leadership in the OSS development process and a motivation for OSS developers to create free versions of their favourite proprietary software may also explain why there would appear to be a distinct lack of imagination in OSS projects. The open source community has so far tended to create facsimiles of proprietary packages rather than the next killer application.
There is, of course, anecdotal evidence pointing to the contrary, but I would definitely agree with this diagnosis. I would, however, argue that this is exactly where the strength of OSS lies: in producing reliable software (reliable because its strengths and weaknesses are well-known). It's like common sense -- not always the best answer, but it works.
I know that a couple atom bombs will give anybody a complex, but this is just silly.
I do believe the roots of this fatalism are way deeper than such recent history (and besides, what else is history anyway than a passing wind?). If anything, then a couple of atom bombs will only make a true fatalist shrug and say "told you so."
The main advantage of e-books over dead tree books is similar to that of paper books over the (more durable) parchment ones: they are much easier (and cheaper) to produce, and also much easier to propagate -- at least in theory (in practice, it seems that we're still not quite "there" yet).
My guess is, they're just trying to pick up some good karma, "encouraging" people to pick up a teaching career and leave, instead of just laying them off life HP did. That way, they'll be able to cut their employment costs, at the same time still retaining a positive image.
The Revolution controller is also white -- just like an iPod. I don't know what this has to do with anything, but I thought I'd better mention it in the off chance that someone finds it interesting that both the iPod and the Revolution are rectangular and white.
Oddly enough, I use Opera for exactly the same reason. I used to be in the Firefox camp as well, but decided to try out Opera when they were handing out free registration keys. Long story short, I tried it, loved it, switched -- and never looked back.
For these mice might have fled to Russia to join the civilization of rats reported to exist somewhere in the Urals. Now, just imagine what will happen if these rats start using these mice as suicide terrorists...

Clearly, you haven't used any of the "better products" you're touting.
EC Tries Hard To Matter; Fails Yet Again. Seriously, they're starting to sound like the next SCO...
My mom says I'm good-looking.
In other words, you fail it.
What, are you blaming Open Source for the Global Warming now?

Why complain if there's nothing I could do about it anyway?

*raises hand* I do. In a non-democratic state, you couldn't even make such accusations without having to fear imprisonment or death.
So what?

Seeing the topic icon, I thought this story had something to do with girls. But oh, how grossly I was mistaken :7

Might as well go back to using parchment then -- no trees killed, just calves :7
You forgot English.
To make the transition away from Windows easier, of course.
And just "letting go" people nearing retirement would hurt their 'positive' image even more...

As if it wasn't bad enough, the flamewar that's about to erupt here will further speed up the process...

Haven't you heard? All your (online) rights have been 'eroded', so there's really nothing left to post but gossip...
