  6. More like a blessing than a nightmare on Is Ubuntu a Compatibility Nightmare for Debian? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I've been always trying to convert from Windows from Linux, and had lots of problems when doing so. Mainly, I was unable to find a distro that was easy to maintain and actually usable. You know, practical.

I tried everything from Red Hat (from 4.2 and up), Conectiva (2 and up), Mandrake (6 and up), SuSE (6.2 and up) and Gentoo (I was never able to determine the version I was using, because as soon as I finished compiling something, I had to emerge world again :P), and Debian as well.

The one I liked *the most* was Debian because it just works... well, at least that was the idea. Since there were no real distributions that worked for me (Debian did, but... hey, look at Woody and Sarge), I kept on using Windows.

Well, what's the point? I'm typing this on Ubuntu, which I've been using since january. It's exactly what I liked on Debian, plus up to date packages. Thanks Canonical.

Since Ubuntu is Debian's newer brother, it's great to see that they are coming up with different project to cover different needs, just like Debian. Debian covers the portability front (with loads of different ports working just the same way on different architectures), and Ubuntu the usability front with both KDE, Gnome and soon other ambients as well (XFCE and others).

Before people go like "Why doesn't Canonical make one cd with both KDE and Gnome?", let me put it this way: the same reason why they don't make one big DVD like Fedora. Read their FAQ ;)

But if you had released the game back in the 80's or the 70's, then it would not only be banned, but the people responsible for releasing the game in Brazil would have been sacked (literally).

  20. Re:Event Horizon on Doom Movie Update · · Score: 1

And then, you find out why they have ditched the "supernatural" in favour of "some stupid virus" for the Doom movie:

"Event Horizon" is one of the worst films that I have ever seen. Very rarely has so much talent and money been squandered on such an ugly mess of a movie. The film deals with an outer space crew who is trying to retrieve a mysterious ship which is trapped deep in the outer limits. The original crew have all been killed and now this crew must find out why. Why? Why? Why? That seems to be the key question of this film. The screenplay is all over the universe. It adds elements from films like "The Exorcist", "Aliens", "The Abyss", "Apollo 13", "Jaws", and just about every other film ever produced. If one idea had been used throughout, then the film would have been admirable and watchable if nothing else. However the references to the aforementioned films make "Event Horizon" a movie that wants desperately to be good, but just does not have the goods to make that dream a reality. Turkey (0 out of 5 stars).

The public doesn't like the idea of "supernatural monsters from another dimension". So, we could either have a great Doom movie that ends up being a failure for the masses, or a blasphemy to all fans, but a moneymaker. You, as a hollywood director, would pick what?
