  2. Re:Solution. on Help for an MMORPG Addict? · · Score: 1

While that is funny, I've dropped all online gaming once I started dating my current girlfriend (2.5 years ago). I just didn't have the time between college, work, and a girlfriend.

I've found regular games are fine because you can start and stop whenever. With online games, there are people talking to you, depending on you, killing you...can't walk away for a second, because you might come back and find your character dead or something. Can't pause and resume later. You can do that with most offline games.

Interestingly, I don't miss it. Having hundreds of hours pumped into a game leaves you with very little (not denying the fun of it, though).

However, it's kind of tough to force someone into a relationship...kinda has to happen by itself. Growing up helps, too.

All this time, all that money, and this is the best interface they could come up with?

Seconded...I've read a bunch of posts on this page about how expensive it is for internet on your cell phone. I have the T-Mobile WAP access for $4.99 a month. It isn't blazing fast or anything, but you can go anywhere you need. I can check mail for school or work (through OMA) or gmail. If I want to go to any site that doesn't have a WAP page, then I can go to Google and do a search, which automatically proxies the pages for me.

Don't forget, most consumers have been incredibly confused since Intel stopped numbering their processors Pentium I, Pentium II, etc. "Pentium M? What's that? I want a Pentium 4, dude! 4 is greater than M! (I think)"

Well, actually, maybe I should take that stuff back...most people probably won't even notice or care that their logo has changed...

True, but that part could be abstracted into cute little icons. I think it's a nifty idea to be able to put together such things like that. It doesn't work for general purpose programming, but for an end user experience, I think it could.

OTOH, natural language processing would be awesome as well.

  11. Here's was I think would be useful on What Will The Future Desktop Interface Look Like? · · Score: 3, Interesting

A desktop system with easy-to-program (read: the average consumer can do it) widgets and interfaces. Probably with some nice web services integration. People who just need to read email and surf the web only need a couple widgets, maybe a mail checker or something. People who work in offices and do really repetitive tasks have ways of easing that through the widgets (again, very easy to program/setup widgets!).
I think anything that allows people to really use their computer the way they want would be great. I'm not saying it doesn't already exist, but I mean something where nearly everyone becomes accustomed to using a computer as a configurable tool. Something where all those times people say, "Well, I just want it to do [this]!!", they can easily set it up to do whatever it is.

    Just my thoughts.
