  1. Re:Alas, poor Analog... on Last Manufacturer of Pro Analog Audio Tape Closes · · Score: 1

My mom has told me stories of using analog tape in her high school days that I found fascinating.

The really interesting part for me was that she used to edit tapes together by literally cutting them with scissors and splicing pieces together with tape - as in, scotch tape or cello tape. The magnetic pickups weren't bothered at all by the adhesive tape, and as long as you made the cuts diagonally across the (audio) tape, the new splice would be strong enough to play.

This kind of directly working with media and data in the old analog formats like tape and film is fascinating to me, being used to working with digital formats through arcane software interfaces. I hope the formats will survive into the future.

It must be Lucas's subconcious assault on those who masturbate to thoughts of Leia or Amidalia, who he sees as his mother, combined with a castration complex he gets from his cold parents.

On a more serious note, I've heard that the most common battlefield injury during the middle ages was a missing hand, from when people tried to block swords with their hand after being knocked down. If you remember from the series, Vader loses his doing that against Luke.

May as well post something informative...

I grew up in Japan, and we celebrate Christmas pretty much like in the west, except we don't have the christian religious meaning to it. To us, it's just a fun holiday that's an excuse to give toys to kids. Parents tell their kids about Santa, and they do believe in him until they grow older.

The more traditional Japanese holiday is new year's, for which the family gathers around to have a feast on new year's eve, much like the American thanksgiving holiday. The day after, most people go to a shrine to greet the new year with blessings, and some still dress up in traditional clothes to do this.

On new year's day, relatives will often travel to visit one another and give gifts of money to young children. This is called "Otoshidama", and it can be as much or more than what's spent on christmas gifts.

Anyways, I usually liked christmas, but Japanese new years was a bit more fun, since I got to see my cousins and stuff. Japan tends to have a lot of fun holidays for kids, check out the wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_festivals

Too bad their best stuff is relased only in Japan.

Child porn laws are there to protect children from predators, not punish kids for stupid mistakes they make while they're teenagers. I know several people who did stupid stuff like that, taking "racy" pics when they were in high school, which were probobly technically illegal. Kids on hormones do stupid things like that, putting them in prison will not help them at all.

  13. Pathfinder's Bab5 boards on Washington Post Buys Slate From Microsoft · · Score: 2, Interesting

Jesus, I thought I was the only one that remembered Pathfinder. For those that don't know, Pathfinder was Time-Warner's attempt to create a service similar to AOL or CompuServe's portals, but on the web without a dial-up service. This was before they got swallowed up by AOL, way back in the early 90's. Apparently, they decided to lump everything owned by them under the "Pathfinder" name, from CNN to Loony Tunes to Babylon 5. It was a disaster, from most accounts.

I was a regular on their Babylon 5 forum, and to this day I have great memories of the people there, and I prefer that board's layout to others like Slashcode and UBB. Unfortunately, Time-Warner basically thought of the boards as a place to get free PR and marketing, and their management of the boards was pretty poor.

The admins did not do much to try to foster a community, and they often seemed to be fighting with the users. I remember they would occasionally delete some sections, and force changess on the board with no warning. It was like the whole BB system was just a forgotten corner of the T-W empire, and we were tossed about by high-level decisions of their marketing dept. The whole board ended up closing with short notice before the end of season 4, I believe. That's when I discovered the joys of Usenet and rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated, but that's another story...

Anyone here from the old Pathfinder Bab5 boards? I was ZoqFotPik, and that was my first BBS...

  25. Re:Yes and no. on Musicians on Internet & Filesharing · · Score: 1

Yes, you shouldn't take music without permission. However, let's not ignore the fact that the internet does empower artists to distribute music on their own terms, without having to go through a label.

Back in the pre-Napster days when MP3s were pretty new, I was asked by a friend to rip short clips (but not the whole songs) for her brother's band to MP3. They were going to put in on their website to publicize them, and maybe get people to buy CDs online. Again, this was way back, shortly before Napster made MP3 a household name, and way before the big labels even thought of using MP3 clips as advertisement. They were an unsigned band, so it made sense to get their music heard as much as possible.

I don't think that they would have liked people trading whole songs online for free, but the point is that the internet allowed them to be heard on their own terms, by a broader audience than they otherwise could have reached. There's no way a little indie band would have gotten regular airplay on radio or TV. The music business is so damn locked up by big labels and media companies that it makes sense for small outfits and independent artists to give some stuff away for free.

The band, btw, was called Revolving Rudy, and they appear to have renamed themselves Gravity and Henry, and you can buy their music at their web site. They still have MP3s for download, though not the ones I ripped for them years ago.
