  3. Summary of the movie on Fahrenheit 9/11 Discussion · · Score: 1

It seems no one has posted a real summary of the movie here, so I will do it. I'm not going to do it annonymously to avoid karma-whoring, cause I paid to see the movie, and I deserve some karma, damnit :P

It is in roughly chronological order, and if I missed anything, let me know.

The movie starts with some footage from the 2000 elections.

    1) Overview of 2000 election, with a focus on FLorida.
    Claims:
    - Most news shows called Florida for Gore early on.
    - Fox News then called Florida for Bush, and other networks follow their lead, apologizing for their "mistake" in calling FL for Gore.
    - The man who made the call for Bush winning FL that night was a Bush cousin working for Fox News.
    - Katherine Harris, who was the Bush campaign chair for FL was also the FL official responsible for vote-counting. She had also disenfranchised a lot of people, which Moore implies was based on race.
    - The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Bush.
    - The Dems, notably Tom Daschle, did not raise enough fuss, and caved in too easily.
    - No Senator was willing to sign a letter to protest the inauguration, even though many Democrats, esp. African-Americans, wanted to officially protest.

    2) Bush's vacation - with "everything going wrong" in the first months of his presidency, Bush goes on vacation. Many funny shots of his antics.
    Claims:
    - Bush spent over 40% of his time on vacation during the time before the 9/11 attacks.

    3) The attack happens on 9/11. No footage of the attack itself, Moore only plays sounds of the attack, and the faces of the New Yorkers reacting. Cut to Bush, who was on his way to a FL school when the first plane hit, and was informed of it. Bush is then shown going on with his photo op with the class. He is informed of the second plane hitting, but does nothing for several minutes, even starting to read a book to the kids.
    Claims:
    - Moore speculates about what was going on in the President's head, shows Pres. Bush wondering "which of them betrayed me", and shows past ties he and his cabinet or family had with Saddam, the Taliban, and the Saudis.
    - Bush did nothing for about seven minutes, seeming to be waiting for advice or orders.

    3) The immediate aftermaths of the attack and the responses are shown.
    Claims:
    - The Bin Laden family is whisked away out of the country, supposedly for their safety, while air traffic is still banned. None of them are interviewed by FBI or police.
    - Despite claims that they've disowned him, some of the Bin Laden family have maintained relations with Osama, meeting him for a family wedding in Afghanistan in 2000.
    - Moore claims that it was reckless to not interview Osama's family members in the U.S., noting that Clinton did not give such treatment to Tim McVeigh's family.

    4) The Bin Laden family is profiled, and connections between them and the Bushes are made.
    Claims:
    - GW Bush and the Bin Laden family shared a financial advisor, who Bush met while in the Texas Air National Guard.
    - The Bin Ladens funded the younger Bush's early oil businesses, so that they could gain political access to Bush Sr., who was head of the CIA, later vice president and president of the U.S.
    - Moore does not claim that Osama himself was involved in this.
    - Bush Jr. worked as basically a lobbyist for the Bin Laden family in the 80's, when he was the executive of an oil company. Bush Sr. now works as a PR rep for Saudi oil interests.
    - Other financial ties are listed, which I can't recall offhand.

Shoot, I'm not even halfway through the movie, and I have to go do some chores. Will finish later, but if anyone else wants to add to this, feel free to do so.

I've always wondered if you guys over there get the same kinds of 'real life crime' shows we get over here (many from the Fox network). Do you have shows like Cops (video documentaries of ride-alongs as cops go on regular calls and patrols), World's Scariest Police Chases(police camera footage of high-speed chases), or America's Most Wanted(A call-in show to publicize criminals that are wanted)? Cops in particular is pretty cool.

It wouldn't suprise me if America is just a better source for these things because we have more crime over here :P

Well, I don't disagree that there are a lot of violence in games, but perhaps you could tell me what the difference between a "christian" videogame and a "secular" game is?

I remember a while back, a "Christian game company" came out with an "Christian first-person shooter" based on the Quake engine which featured the player slaying demons and such with holy relics and swords. Someone pointed out that this was similar in concept to Doom, you go around killing demons. But Doom is considered a "bad" or "evil" game by many fundamentalist types, whereas the christian game was okay for some reason. Is there really a difference between killing demons with a sword in an "christian" game and killing them with shotguns in secular one? The point of both is to entertain through violence, is it not?

I'm not anti-religious, I just feel that sometimes people are more lenient towards something if it's presented as an overtly religious than as secular.

Oh yeah, I remember Marine Doom - I don't think I ever played it, but I was inspired by a article on it to create my own 'realistic' Doom .Wad.

It featured the Nazis from the Wolfenstein levels of Doom 2 in a bunker-type building, with terrace-like hills and such. I found that the Doom AI could not stop the Nazis from killing each other through friendly fire :P Plus, I could not stop myself from including those mutant spider-things with the plasma canons. So, if the War on Terror turns to fighting Nazis and biomechanical spiders with frickin' plasma cannons, I'll be ready :)

Point being, make sure the simulation is close to real life before you make it a training tool.

P.S. I used Ben Morris's DCK(Doom Construction Kit) to create the map. Morris went on to create WorldCraft for Quake and he got a job at Valve, where WorldCraft became the internal level editor for Half-life. They were the coolest level editors I ever used, and I must give props to Mr. Morris. If you ever have to do level-editing give WorldCraft a try : )

I found that when a team was unsupervised, they'd shoot at the enemy automatically. So one time, I placed some soldiers in front of one of the enemy-generating buildings, set them on auto, and left for a vacation. : ) When I came back, their kills were in the thousands...

Ah, good times. Anyone know if there's a free or opensource version these days?

I've lived in Oregon for more than a few years, and recently moved to Memphis. I believe the reason people in Oregon are so used to rain is that they don't get the kind of thunderstorms we get in the south.

It would be more accurate to say that it drizzles in Oregon constantly - it's spread out over a long time and doesn't have much intensity.

In the mid-south, it's sunny most of the time - we rarely get much cloudy days over here, and it's really hot compared to Oregon. However when it does rain it tends to come down harder, and we occasionally get storms like nothing I've ever seen in Oregon. When I lived there, I never carried an umbrella, either. In the south, there have been times where I was afraid of getting out of the car because the rain and the lightning was coming down so hard. Several inches of rain will fall in a couple of hours, and flash flooding occurs. The hardest rain I have ever seen was in Louisiana, by the way - real wrath-of-God stuff, it's no wonder they have more fundamentalists here :) The weather in Oregon is so pleasant and laid back, just like the people :) In the south, it's all fire(heatwave) and brimstone(thunderstorms & tornadoes).

In Oregon, the actual amount of rain may be higher, but it's spread out over a longer period of time and is not as intense.

Believe it or not, Portland is not the rain capital of the world.

I notice Memphis was not on your list of cities to compare with. Well, let me tell you how it is here:

    - Memphis is famous for three things - Elvis(plus daughter), the shooting of Martin Luther King Jr., and Justin Timberlake.

    - We're in western Tennessee, brdering Mississippi and Arkansas for triple the hickness. Portland borders what, Washington? I bet even the 'white trash' there drinks lattes("But from *Starbucks*!" you say. "How lowbrow! Real coffee lovers drink Coffee People!").

    - Oregon's favorite drinks - Coffee, microbrew beer.

    - Tennessee's favorite drinks - Jack Daniels, cheap beer.

    - You have Tanya Harding, true; but we have a lot of them, it's just that none can make it to the Olympics in figure skating.

So in closing.... Portland is far from the white-trashiest place in the U.S.
