When you see people driving into stores, they are almost always automatic cars. I believe the reason behind this is human behavior. We know that we need to press down the pedal if we want to stop, In a panic situation what I think is happening is that people have this instinct that they need to push down the pedal. They notice that they go faster, so they press down harder. Then before people realize they are pushing down the wrong pedal, they hit something all the wile thinking they are doing the right thing. And as they go faster, they won't be calming down to realize the errors of their ways.
With a shift, the way to break is to first lift up your foot from the gas. That would already mean you will go slower. Next you need to press down the break. So going slower is a two-step process where the first is to move up your foot. And as taking your foot of the gas also means you will go slower, you will have a bit more time to correct your foot and press down the right pedal. And if you go faster (because you press down the wrong pedal) you will take off your foot and have time to get it right this time.
I can easily imagine that people press down the gas instead of the break. However the two step process would be safer compared to the one-step process. Just human nature. That does not mean automatic cars are less safe. They are just in these specific situation.
When I get an outage, it mostly take about 15 minutes, if I even notice. I always wait an hour and then call. The last time I did that I got a person explaining that there was an outage before I even could ask a question. (If you call for the outrage, we are working on it)
I have used several providers for several reasons and used dialup, ADSL, Cable and now VDSL. And I could change providers right now and lose only a month in subscription.
On the downside I am forced to take 35 paid holidays. Living in a socialist country sucks,
Living in Belgium. We must have a lot of things via paper. Especially contracts. That then needs to be scanned. If we are unable to find the proof of the debtor, we know that we can't even ask for it. Yes it has happened that we where unable to find the scanned documents. So that is a loss for us. If this happens on occasion, it is just booked off.
If this would happen on such a large scale, not only would we fire at least one person (and that could be a CxO), but we would fear for the existence of the company as we could lose our license due to (from the top of my head IAMAL) neglegd and attempt of fraud. And both are equally bad.
The investigations would most likely already be under way before it got to that point and we would get a severe warning that would lead to a lot of change in procedures and even stricter control for the next 10 years or so.
Good that I find you here. We still need back the 10.350,12USD you borrowed. I assume that you use an alias and not your real name to get out of your legitimate obligations. Pay up as you have the ethical responsibility to do so.
They are not in an isolated environment. Google uses it to determine how much they charge for Youtube ads and how much users get. They most likely use it to determine the search results for you.
Ad they are an ad company, the questions you need to ask is if the links you get for a search are really the general best or just those that you will be happy with that will make you come back for more. And it will learn that everybody can be influenced by feeding some information and taking away other information.
... then every other company is a tech company, because they use tech. Just because you add the words "Internet" does not mean that it is new or tech or whatever. Google is a marketing company using tech to sell ads. Netflix is a media distribution company that has some own content using the Internet to distribute what they have.
This is why most media companies use editors to correct this stuff. (See what I did there?)
If you work in a small company, most likely you will be asked to do things that are outside your job. What this will be will depend on the company. This is not limited to the IT department.
The reason can be that due to the growing of the company the task was never pointed towards the correct department. If these are minor things, it will most likely not change, If it takes up too much time, it might be that they will address the issue and appoint it to the correct department.
What you need to do if these things happen is first take a look at the time spend on it, then look who should do it instead, next talk first with cow orkers if they already addressed it and then to your boss with a clear explanation why it should go to department Y. Because he needs to sell it that department Y needs to do it. There are as many reason why they want it as why they don't. (The lamest I ever saw was that every manager should have the same amount of FTE and divide the jobs according to that)
But yeah, there will always be things that won't be 100% with your job description and the smaller the company, the higher the chance this will happen. Goes up to 100% if you are alone.
If I where to communicate with others and I do want it to be secret, I would use a combination of things. 1) Post images every day to a Usenet group(Wait, I already do that) 2) Use steganography to add info to the image or just add a comment like a quote in the comment section of the image. (Wait I already do that) 3) Read another group like alt.test to see replies (Wait I already do that)
Why Usenet? Because then there is no provable connection between two people. It is broadcasting and the different servers will be distributing everything. So no logfile of one specific website to verify. And even then it would not be clear if you are just downloading my wallpapers on news:alt.binaries.pictures.wal... because you like them or....
And they can also use people to say what the message is, like they did with Osama Bin Laden. They had to pose as a red cross breaking several international laws and setting back aid for several decades to find him.
Messages will be send, regardless of the difficulties you put in the way.
And furthermore, they where allies and did not do it alone. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... Ignoring the others is not just ignorant. It is disrespectful to the soldiers who have given their lives.
Thanks for calling me young. I have a bit more driving experience and I like to drive manual. Just a personal choice, not because it is better or worse.
Mine is about the same age, I think. The only reason I am thinking in buying a new PC is that the small form factor becomes possible.
I am not a gamer, I do have 3 4K screens and all they do is desktop stuff, basically.
My first one was a 364DX. I then bought a new one about every 1.5 years and the speed difference was obvious. Did that for a while till it was every 4 years. The last one I bought was not really noticeable in speed once I configured the ad blockers and my own DNS server (using mvps hosts, it filters out a LOT(*)) the speed is great in usage. The bottleneck in speed is now me, as a user and not the machine.
Having a faster machine would be like comparing a old beetle and a Ferrari in heavy traffic. You will get there at the same time.
Yes, I have installed newer verions of my OS and run now Debian Jessie with XFCE. I am sure it will be ok for several more years
Most people will only use a browser and not much more.
(*)Added advantage is that other devices at my home use the same DNS server, so they are a lot faster as well when I am at home due to the blocking of a lot of things where the domains point to 0.0.0.0
I have several phones lying around at home. I assume most people will hold on to their old phones or at least one of them.
If I ever get to travel to the US, I would be doing so as a tourist. I would just us an old phone and put on just the things I really need, like travel. Also no password protection (when I go over the border) and a fake email address.
This is more than what I had to do when I traveled through east Germany.
OTOH, let's not go to the USofA. It is a silly place.
Not really, trying to put this nicely, but you don't understand much about Europeans.
Spanish (OK, Gallego) father. German mother. I have different nationality to them and live in a country that is yet another one. I have worked for several larger European companies where I have had the pleasure to explain to CxO why something would not work in country B, just because it worked in country. So I think I am well aware of how Europeans think. I just pointed out the difference between how Europeans and how the Americans thinks on a personal level about privacy without judgment what is better and what is worse. Just that people understand that there is a difference.
Bit like when you both are talking about a thong and then the other wonders where you put it on your body.
The place I got robbed was at home once. I already had given up on my cards. So it was nice when the door rang and an Arab in a kaftan with a beard gave me back my wallet he had found in the bushes. I do not live in a dangerous town or even part of town. Shit happens and only once.
I am a person that thinks more about the nice gentleman who came to my house over a period of several days to be sure I was at home than the asshole who took my wallet.
I have traveled a lot and I will always try to fit in and look as much as a local and also behave as a local. Never had an issue.
I live in Belgium. If I go to the supermarket I pay with a credit card. The company I buy it will not be able to do any profiling as they do not keep the card info, only the transaction info. That is why they really want me to use a store card with points. I do not do that. The credit card company zill not see what I bought. It could be beer or diapers, but they have no idea. They can see what type of store I bought it, so they could guestimate. The kicker is that that is forbidden to do in Belgium. They are not allowed to do profiling, even if the data is there. (In The Netherlands I know they can)
So I am pretty happy using my credit card everywhere and not be profiled, nor being harassed by commercial offers either.
Understand that there is a HUGE difference about how people in the EU and in the US think about privacy. In the US if it isn't public, it is private. In the EU if it isn't private, it is public.
Also in the EU the general idea is that the laws should be there for the people in the first place. And they are used to even the playing field between the heavyweight companies and the lightweight individuals.
This is so much difference that the standard answer from an American will be "This is stupid, because companies." while a European will most likely say "This is great, because companies"
Again: the idea of what privacy means is different between the two. You can see this with e,g, Net Neutrality.
I said logical, not good.

I know people who prefer the taste of Diet Coke over regular Coke. I like neither, so not me.
Quake 3 Arena? That brings back memories. Are you BOFH?

That is language for you. Language between humans is always unpricise. Some attempts have been done to correct this and all have failed.
Context is everything and words will have different meaning at different moments. e.g. hacker or 'bad'.
Think of it as the computer language Perl, but more confusing.

I repeat:
Jean has a big moustache.
Aunt Marie is doing well.
I repeat:
Aunt Marie is doing well.
These where the message from Radio Free Internet.
I would hate to work from home. I like having a clear divide between work and home.

It is race. You can have 3 grandparents from Norway and still be called African American, yet almost nobody would call Charleze Theron one.
This is fed by culture from all sides.

Sounds as if you are pretty pretentious yourself.
So it is caused by an injection into the (female) body?

In scenario A I am down USD20.
In Scenario B I am down 4.35USD as the money that has been robbed will be reimbursed by the bank.
So B is better. And yes, where I live they will do that.
