    Really, all candidates have a common goal when it comes to IT infrastructure for their sites:

    Be cheap

    They know money should goto advertising for themselves, everything else is low priority--that's what wins elections! NOT OSes.

    Now what's interesting here is that Linux offers lower TCO over the short term (i.e. most of the stuff is free and a political candidate's requirements are pretty straight forward: Ads!). So those candidates that are 1. hiring smart people to keep costs down (i.e. use linux) and 2. are aware of their infrastructure (open source community, in touch with the 'future' vs. just listening to the best marketing speech and a good dinner) says a lot about how a candidate will run this country.

    Therefore, my vote goes to the linux candidate.

    Cause wealthy ad-producers and execs still need jobs. Is it a necessity to have all this additional advertising? Likely not. Madison avenue cares only for one's deep pocket, not an industry nor cause.

    It's now somewhat refreshing to look at a sparse results page. And still goto ebay to bid on things.

    They'd be smart to move to either browser/web2.0 technology running on Access's/PalmOS Linux OS. 1. they are not in the biz to maintain an OS as well as sell binaries. It's about software as a service (like MS's strategy!)



    Yes google apps on an iPhone sounds great, but they discount the J2ME/Brew push that's gaining a lot of momentum in the cellphone space.

    Any game, or reality show that uses SMS, phonce calls, internet votes, or internet gaming systems are pretty much rigged unless there's some accountability--i.e. an audit, verification track & plan.

    If there's no verification or official results posted, how creditable are these games/shows--hmm that they're games & shows says something.

    The thing is ion drives still need a mass source and that mass source is usually very, very small, especially for long distance propulsion (i.e. think Hughes GEO sats and their ion drives used today). Even if the scientists still bet on M = mv over time, the vehicle needs to reach max momentum way before the destination, likely 1/3 of the distance, if they plan to use the same devices to stop the vehicle upon reaching the destination.

    Just use solar sails: simpler, cheaper, more efficient/effective, less mass ejection materials needed at launch.

    Well the combo drives are also DOA with this format snafu. One, there's not enough compelling content for consumers to really make a choice on format. Two, the studios not solidified their production workflows yet so it's not a billion dollar risk just yet, the repro companies have taken that burden/risk for now. Three, everyone sees this format war as counter productive from a business standpoint--it's really that Sony goign to win at business maneuvering aspect. And it's due to MS and the 'new tech' companies wanting "in" on the media business. Hence why everyone outside Bluray is being a sore loser now.

    And four, the content's digital anyways, it's not permanent as in film, so format isn't as critical.

    radio waves at 200dB cause health issues, i.e. hearing loss. This could be equivalent to someone screaming in your ear, so humans should be considered a hazard too (Hmmm, already well known?).

    If people are given real information about the technology their using (vs. just the social benefits), we would be spending more time trying to regulate (not cure) cancer or mental 'illness' than these studies. The science does say that EM is describe via power laws and energy. And the energy is pretty small, near natural occurring EM. It is not an absolute answer that cellphones and WiFi is good or bad.

    If our bodies can't handle (i.e. cell repair) EM at that level, then we got bigger problems: think solar flares and natural radiation spikes.

    True. Dell has been around since the early 90's.

    If you look at it, they put MS on the map as the de facto OS for business and home. If it wasn't for Dell, we'd be using Macs right now at work (remember, Mac IIc/Lc's were more available in places like the fed gov't, i.e. BIG contracts, than PC/Windows back then).

    Dell made MS (MS then made HP & IBM). Dell's move is symbolic, especially if Dell can get their quality back up to snuff.

    Of course, one thing MS gets is the business environment. I've found FUD to get a great argument for IT purchases. In the corporate IT world, FUD rules cause in the end it's all about budgets, TCO, and to some, the self-need to be promoted w/o doing the most work (sounds like the good-ol rat race...).

    Goes to show...

    Take a simple idea (GPS, really, basics of triangulation/time measuring) of a point in space.

    Apply the "design by committee" methodology (i.e. a consortium).

    End up with a bloated, delayed, costly, SNAFU based system that you'll be forced to use. So typical... (both HDDVD & Bluray come to mind) -- no just the EU!

    Simple objective, simple concepts, good technology, smart thinking == small team to "g'it it done" and out the door.

    There is the large Global Services dept that does basic IT support (like those IBM folks at our company). It's not the consulting people, but pure IT admins. It's a pretty large chunk of G.S. and though I wouldn't see it being 100K people (more like 30K), it makes sense for IBM to move away from that type of work in view that IT outsourcing is still moving at a rapid pace to Asia as well as firms like Accenure, Deloitte, and the rest of the Big 4 (are getting in the game big time).

    ok, that's 37$ in labor--over 300%.

    Since we're talking education, why do they just have kids assemble their own laptops. I mena the OLPC pc will be cheap plastic snap pieces likely. And have the kids do their own QA. In the end they're exposed & learn the technology, not just use the technology. We need more engineers & scientist, not mouse clickers.

    That would cut labor at least in half, and we end up with a ~$25 computer.

    T1000 sense. Having a LCD/optics that use EEG responses to detecting threats is more like what was seen in the Terminator movies (T1000 targeting sequences). My eyes can easily notice color, motion, anormal scene changes differences, but my brain processing says it may not be important to 'pay attention'. Reading EEGs should be able to bypass the processing part and just display information in a holistic approach to enchance the processing part. In otherwords, it will give soldiers a headache in the long run...

    Why build a opticial sensor when there's a perfectly good, free [as in beer], orgainc sensor we can tap in our heads?

    It's because of the FUD from early Swing adopters (pre jdk1.3). Swing has come a long way in providing presentation rich apps--much more that Window Forms. Also, have swing issues? Then use SWT.

    It's not that /. has been around longer, or has a moderation system, but that the users understand what the site is for--informative news & intelligent discussion of those items.

    What we saw on digg was a childish name calling revolt, nothing new, please move along, and nothing intelligent nor enlightening. The revolt-postings made me sick from the cool kitten pics I usually see on that site.

    In retrospect, did we see a overload-splattering of the key on /. ? No... I only saw a few posts (mainly as result of spill over from the one article yesterday about digg?) and it was on to the next subject. People understand this site vs. a site made so for people to voice their attitudes.. and not their opinions.
