The Spaceball is an example. Still around today, and in use in 3D CAD and animation. I want one, but man are they expensive, even on eBay.

Except...that requires the phone lines to distribute Ethernet to your house. The thing about DSL is that it uses the currently installed lines from the CO to your house, thus not requiring infrastructure upgrades.

Unless of course you meant power the VoIP gateways off of the analog phone line, which is something I've been watching for. And it seems pretty cool.

Maybe it's the lake effect (at least I think that's what it's called). Basically, the lake freezes from the top down. But ice expands when it freezes, so there comes a point where the ice at the top of the lake is too thick, so the water at the bottom can't form into ice as it can't expand.

Or so I recall from a distant high school class...

Ok, I'm a little less than impressed by how it walks. Essentially it's waddling, putting it's center of gravity over one "pad" (or foot), moving the other, and then moving the COG to the other pad. Admittedly, this is a decent hack, and it does work. Since it's clear that this thing likely its tethered to it's controller (be it computer, etc), I wonder if it would be possible to put more servos in controlling the angle of the pad. Then the pad comes down, and the unit senses if it's tipping, and corrects. Kind of like a segway in two dimensions (back-front & left-right). In theory this should produce less waddling, and more realistic walking, right?

  7. Almost what you want... on Sony, Walkmans And The iPod · · Score: 2, Informative
Have you checked out the iRiver H series? They are slightly larger than the iPod, have about 16 hours battery life and can load songs via USB mass-storage. Songs loaded this way can only be played via filename until you update the database. I use a program called iHPtool. I leave it on my player's hard drive itself, and after I dump new files, no matter what computer I'm at, I can quickly update my database.

And, it has a built in FM tuner, comes with LCD remote, optical and analog ins and outs, records direct to MP3 or WAV, has Ogg Vorbis support. You can record via analog in, optical in, or built in microphone.

There are a few quirks with some firmware, and navigation isn't as easy as with the iPod. Also, iRiver is super busy writing firmware for a few of their upcoming units, so a firmware update hasn't been released for these units for a little while. You should check out the hilarious disgruntled 14 year olds on the iRiver community forum.

Anyway, I made my choice, and I'm happy with it.
