Hmm...why shouldn't this section be about general rights? If it was only about the "online" universe, wouldn't it be called "your online rights"? Rather, put the emphasis in a different spot: "your rights -- online".
However, I do agree with your assessment that not all of the stories posted here are specifically about individuals' rights. Perhaps instead this section should be called "The Law".
The point of the law is to prohibit retailers from selling/renting such material directly to minors. If parents want to buy or rent a mature-rated game for their child, they have every legal right to do so.
It's a similar situation to that of R-rated movies in the theater. Children under 17 are not permitted, unless they're accompanied by an adult.
1. Pink Floyd - "Money" 2. The Beatles - "Can't Buy Me Love" 3. Dire Straits - "Money for Nothing" 4. The Beatles - "Money (That's What I Want)" 5. Eddie Money - "Two Tickets to Paradise"
But I'm not going to tell you. Go read Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series. It's more satisfying to read all seven in order, but the last one, And Eternity, addresses the Evolution vs. Creationism "debate".
Hence the downside of the fully autonomous robot: it will have to use sewage or excrement to attract the flies and is bound to smell appalling.
It seems The Register dug a little deeper. The point of the sewage is not only to attract the flies but also to host the bacteria that break down the insects' chitin into sugars, which in turn power the bot.
Why do you hope the editors are getting something from his prolific submissions? Do they deserve to profit in any way, if the readers (or, as it seems, a large number of them) are unhappy?
Slashdot should be all about us, the readers. If we weren't here, there would be no reason for it to exist. So if you're sick of it, do something about it -- send angry emails, go away and post on a different board, burn down your neighbor's garage in protest -- whatever will get the editors' attention. But don't hope that at least they might profit just because you feel you're getting f*cked over. If you don't like what they're doing, put 'em against the wall, and put Roland up there too if you want.
It's not just the money. Lucas wants to hang out with Bill Gates some more, and the best way for him to do that is to churn out a flick so he can set up a private screening for Bill and his buddies.
It's not just legitimate use that saved the developers of those programs, it's also the fact that their software and P2P networks are decentralized. I imagine the court would have had a somewhat different ruling if there were a central server for the software and a sharing repository.
'At present, P2P software has too many times been hijacked by those who use it for illegal purposes to which the vast majority of our consumers do not wish to be exposed.'
What a coincidence, I feel the same way about guns. Why can't these people try to curb something dangerous?
I know this is OT, but I gotta say it:
1) Your sig quote actually belongs to Yoda, not Spock.
2) Spock (of Star Trek fame) is not a doctor of anything.
He got held up in a status meeting. He'll be here in a minute.
Sporting a new ergonomic design, the device comes with a transparent flip cover everyone is sure to love.
This statement is not news. It's an advertisement. Editors, please edit.

Now my Sim can piss his pants and pass out on the floor in German or Spanish!
Nothing wrong with CuntOS. It's got decent security...there's only one hole, but it's a biggie.
Yes, congratulations Mr. Molyneux!
Now, can you put in a good word for John Carmack?
Soon I'll be able to clean up by selling my stash of 5.25" floppies! Sweet!
...will welcome our new asteroid overlords.

"Have a Cigar" would be another appropriate one...

2. The Beatles - "Can't Buy Me Love"
3. Dire Straits - "Money for Nothing"
4. The Beatles - "Money (That's What I Want)"

From Cyberdyne, a name you know and trust...
The new T-1000 mobile munitions...er, communications...device combines the latest technology with ergonomic design.
Try the T-1000...it'll blow you away!
Two bad things that go worse together!
Crap, I shouldn't have said that...Henny Youngman's estate is gonna sue me for using a one-liner (TM).
Comic Book Guy on the next episode of The Simpsons:
"Worst...President...ever!"
Better yet, watch Bush's speeches with a few of your friends and make wisecracks a la MST3K.
Record yourselves doing it, then send the tapes to America's Funniest Videos.
Just remember to get Best Brains' permission first.
...Roland the Headless Slashdot Poster?
Ouch, that almost hurt to say. If Warren Zevon were alive right now, he'd be spinning in his grave.
You better not misunderestimate him, or he'll launch a nucular missile at you!
