That very much depends on where you live. Over here in Europe all you need is PlayTV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayTV) to record live TV and do all the usual stuff you'd expect from a DVR. True, it doesn't let you run your own applications, but then again I'm struggling to come up with anything I'd want to run on a media centre other than - well - media players.

Why isn't anyone mentioning the consoles? Both the 360 and PS3 offer Netflix streaming... The PS3 is a rather capable media player overall... DVD/BluRay, MPEG via DLNA, Netflix, PSN video store, recognises external USB storage so you can play your movies off it etc.

I use one of these at home and while it's not the best pick for moving large amounts of data between machines, it's a good solution for sharing an internet connection without having to run wires all the way around the flat. I tried WiFi, but it's an old victorian house in central London and something seems to cause massive interference. Not persistently, but every odd minute I'd lose the connection to the router. The bottom line being: I don't think anyone is trying to argue that these things are going to replace wires or WiFi for the common case. There are situations - like mine - though where they're a very convenient solution.

Working 2 minutes from Apples Regent Street (London) store and having had a few problems with my MacBook I can say that Apple is no better than any of the other retailers if not worse.
You'll need to get yourself an appointment first. No problem if you paid the extra 200 pounds for pro care; you can book up to 14 days in advance. If you're sane however, you can only make bookings for the same day on their website. I stayed awake til midnight a couple of times before I got fed up and realized that there's absolutely no point in trying.
I thought the idea was at some point: Walk into the store, make an appointment, come back later; but that's definitely not the case.

I used to have a dreadful Dell notebook, and while the thing itself was rubbish, the service was a lot better than what I experienced with Apple.

  8. So who do we hate again? on Microsoft Sides With Nintendo Against Sony · · Score: 1

I really cant help myself on this one: I dont want Microsoft extending their monopoly to the living room, I hate Sony for the way they treat their customers and just seem to copy innovation the way Microsoft does, and I'm really getting sick of Mario Kart, Metroid, Zelda, Super Smash Brothers, Pokémon, ....
Nintendo does a lot of innovation in the hardware sector, which I _really_ enjoy, but the software side of things just seems to do the same stuff over and over again. If you look at Mario Kart especially: the gameplay has hardly changed a bit since its first incarnation. Also, when it comes to Nintendo being the poor underdog, just look at what they did with Sega by forcing developers to release their games on the NES/SNES only.

Bottom line seems to be that I really dont want any of this companies to gain market dominance. I want them to constantly challenge each other.

I think the actual reason for him being such a threat is his ability to dodge censorship. Seeing how much media attention the videos he (supposedly) spreads recieve, you can kind of guess of what importance he is. This will, of course, again be used to push forward with laws cutting down on internet anonymity. Cause why would you want to be anonymous if you're not a commie/terrorist?

Firstly: Sony DADC and Sony Computer Entertainment have barely anything to do with each other apart from the similarity in the name; so that alone is just rediculous.
Apart from that: Do you really think Microsoft is any better than Sony in this respect? Both the PS3 and the XBox360 will rely heavily on their internet connection, meaning that both companies will spy on you just as badly as Valve is doing with PC gamers right now.

Especially because of all the different codecs supported by default (Pixlet, H264, Animation/Lossless). It's the only format I know of that supports such a wide range of ecoding methods and where you can be absolutely sure that when another person has this package installed, it WILL work.

"The argument I hear most in support of x86 over PPC is the price - the cheapest PC is a few hundred bucks cheaper than the cheapest Mac."

If you compare prices then compare value as well.
And in this case this not only aplies to the hardware but to the OS as well, because in order to get the same amout of functionality you get with your latest OSX release you'd have to buy quite a bit of extra Software to your WindowsXP Home edition.

And even if you were to just compare the hardware itself, you'd see that the g5 powermac is hardly any more expansive than a comparable PC (to the extend you can compare the two).

Macs aren't really so expansive, it's just that they don't offer the same half-assed systems a lot of other companies *cough* Dell *cough* do. This was btw. written on a Dell Inspiron8200 with broken USB Ports and a rich history of fucking itself up.
