The problem with the ethernet adaptor was that the games had to be reprogrammed to use it! Nobody wanted to buy a new version of their games to use the broadband adaptor. That and sega made it impossiable to find.

If they finish morrowind and Shenmue 2 is really good, then I might get an X-Box. But as of right now all the cool games are ps2/GC. RE4 on GC, now I have to get a GC, well that and Zelda.

How many really awesome games come out for the PC every year? 2? 3? Let's face a simple fact, the PC has crappy games compared to most consoles. The thing that makes PC games good is that the really good ones have almost infinite replay value (Quake FPS, Sim games, Civ, SC, Diablo, Sports) and the ones that don't usually have some underground group that does a conversion for it. PC games are released with more bugs then they should be. You may be able to blame this on crappy hardware, but the quality games ( Quake, all blizzard games) have a tenth of the bugs of 99% of the PC games on the shelves today. PC game developers need to spend more time in the QA department, and become perfectionists rather then letting crap get on the shelves.

They are not selling you a computer. They are selling you a 'limited' development kit. The whole point of this product is to get people to develop hobbist games for it (and not the XBOX). If you're not into throwing your time away making video games, then this is not for you.

It might be interisting to see if you could use this to build your home entertainment intregration device, but why would this be any better then just a normal PC? PCs can do more and cost less! This is just another toy to play with unless you are really looking for a way to break into the console games industry, for which this could be great. Assuming that you want to spend the time to learn the tools.

They've had this since the PS2 was invented, doesn't anyone remember the PS2 TOOL? It was a dev station that ran linux. Probably had more RAM and whatnot, but it was for debugging. I saw one at the GDC last year, they were neat but again, they are just for developing games.

This will run web browsers like crap and generally be slow compared to a NORMAL PC, but if you actually learn how to use the CPU and do some assembly work, it might be worth it. (maybe)

    --end quote

Actually, hydrogen that you can buy in a canister today, doesn't just come from the air. It's not like you can just suck hydrogen out of the air easily. You can, but you have to seperate out the other gasses (N2 , O2 CO2 etc.. ) Most hydrogen comes from electrolysis, taking water (H2O) and using electricity to break the chemical bonds, creating hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. Guess what, this electricity comes from (gasp!) burning something, nuke plants , wind or solar power.
Since most of our power come from burning stuff, most hydrogen is created by creating the polutants that you say that we should avoid.
I think that 'green' people should focus on not using power in the first place. As anyone who's ever been on a diet knows, the way to lose weight is to not eat the food in the first place. In the same way, just don't use as much power, then we won't have to generate as much power and less polution as a result.

Basically, every intel chip since the pentuim has had more then one 'execution' unit. The original pentuim had 2, but the second one was crippled.

The Pentium 2 was the first full superscalar intel chip. Now they throw all the 486 away though, as they take the instructions and turn them into many micro instructions, then have another internal execution engine that executes the new instructions, then reassembles them at the end. Why? because the x86 instruction set is too complex to build a processor that can handle all instructions in HW alone. So they turn the large instruction into many small ones. Then they have a core that is very superscalar and can execute the micro instructions very fast.

However, if you want to know the maximum amount of DATA that a G4 processor can handle at a time, then yeah, 128 bits is correct. Because the G4 has the 'amazing' altivec unit that can process 128bits of data at one time. The lengths of the data can vary (8,16 or 32 bits), to fill the 128bits of processing.

Civ style games for example (b4 you say anything, where's the ps2 port of SMAC?) or to a lesser degree, FPSes. When the PS2 and XBOX get their heads out of their asses and join the DC online, then you'll be able to play lots of games online.

What will make linux a viable game creation platform are things like SDL, WorldForge and other open source projects that are also games. If people continue to develop open source gaming engines and the tools needed to create content for them, then maybe in a few years we will see more games popping up on linux first. If there are better tools on linux, then the games will come. Right now the best tools available for creating games all run on WINDOWS. Everything from 3dstudiomax to directX. Yes, directX is a good tool because it supports so many features.

SDL is a good tool, but there needs to be a larger pool of people using and developing it before it will spawn great games on a regular basis.
