It is kind of silly when people try to claim something that they will never actually be able to possess.
I say let them 'claim' the moon, mars, whatever they want. Maybe it will motivate someone to actually go there and check out their claims. And, if the don't go, why does it matter if the claimed it?
Personally, I prefer having a physical book in my hand to page through rather then trying to read something on a screen. An actual book just feels more "solid" and "real" to me.
But, there are some advantages to ebooks, especially when used as a reference document. The good old ctrl-F makes finding specific information much faster then looking in an index or table of contents. Also, If you forget your ebook somewhere, it is just a matter of connecting to your home computer to download it wherever you may happen to be.
Yeah, I do the same thing. I usually don't even care what's in the directory, but you gotta give it the old 'ls' anyway. Well, I guess there are probably worse habits one could have.
From what I can tell, no that I've looked into very carefully or anything, but this Picasa seems to be a program you download and keep you on your hard drive. I'm not sure if its something that will be searchable via a google internet search, probably only locally.
But, i'm just making shit up, of course.
I guess the new default them released with.9 was pretty unpopular if they are changing it already with.9.1. I, personally, thought it was sleeker then there old default theme. I haven't looked at the new one in.9.1 yet though, but it doesn't really matter since it is so easy to change your theme anyway.
you store you files on a remote server owned by the government? How much storage space do you get? What kind of privacy can you expect? Does every resident automatically get an account?
Whether or not compatibility should be a reason when choosing software is irrelavent. The fact is compatibility is the reason 90 percent of people choose software. All they want to know is "Will my favorite game work?" or "Will I be able to open the files my friends send me on MSN messenger?" And, since most people run MS operating systems, most people choose (or just use because its pre-packaged) MS software. But everyone knows that already anyway, I suppose...
To be fair, not all MS software sucks ass. I, for one, prefer Word over any of the open source alternatives for its quick load times, functionality, and compatibility. Yes, the compatibility is only an issue because of MS's shady business practices, but we have to accept the fact that if everyone uses a format, we have to be compatible with it.
So, does this mean if I want to watch a movie on my computer I have to use the VGA output on my video card? Damn, I shouldn't have wasted all that money on my monitor with a DVI in.
Base 12? Who needs base 12? I say we ditch both the imperical and metric system and derive and new system of measurement based on base 2. Then, we switch our number system to base 2 and create an amry of binary warriors! Just think of the advantages such a system would have. A young child would only need to remember two different characters to write! And, well, i'm sure there are many others as well....
Cosmic rays are rare? I remember seeing a cosmic ray detector at CERN (a large particle collider in Switzerland/France) and that thing went off very rapidily. My point, we are constanly be bombarded by cosmic rays, that is why neutrino detectors are only built deep underground or inside of mountains.
I'm sorry, but lisp is not a good language to use. Although i have never programming, my first college leve CSCI class used SCHEME (a direct descendant of Lisp if i remember correctly) as the language. This language is structed very difficult for a new computer science student to easily understand. The endless parenthesis does not help either. And, on top of this, the language is completely dead! I much rather would have learned an assembly language. This would have given students a better feel for the hardware and would have had useful applications.
Yes, I agree. The reason that these games seem creepy is not because they are too realistic, it is because they are not realistic enough. Look at any high quality CG movie. This are not creepy as the characters have life like expressions and there facial expressions, movements etc are in sync with what is going on.
video games just need to become more lifelike, not less, to get beyond the creepiness...
There are many imacs placed around my campus that function as kiosks. They have very limited functionality (only web browser, i belive) but they perform this function well. I'm sure the configuration can be modified to include other applications as well.

yeah, it looks pretty good, but is it as good as the Virtual Boy?

Seems like just another reason for these students not to use Windows

Come on, Open Office takes over 30 seconds (well, i've never timed it but it has to be near there) to load on my machine where word takes less than 2.

IE has secuirty holes? Since when?
Yes, but in all seriosness, if the security holes were there for everyone to see maybe MS would be more apt to fix them...

I'm not sure what kind of church this is for, but hopefully they won't be needing too much porn...
