  1. Re:Problems aside... on A Peek at AT&T's New Browser, Pogo · · Score: 1

My thoughts exactly, isn't AT&T the ones with a special back room for the NSA to tap whatever they want?

On the other hand, why shouldn't applications take advantage of modern computer hardware. Who says a web browser has to be simple. I am not saying Pogo is the way to go, but if a browser came up with great new innovative 3D way to browse, I'd consider it.

I invested in a great computer and wish there was better support for x64 and quad or even dual processors.

  8. Re:How do the acid-test creators test the acid tes on Acid3 Test Released · · Score: 1

I also wondered this, I assume they took the time to meticulously "render" it by hand, perhaps multiple times by different people (or groups of people).

In response to the other replies, I am not sure how you got from the parent that they thought the test was biased against IE. IE could have passed flawlessly and other browsers all fail but the test wouldn't have changed because it test the next generation web specs. The creators of ACID3 don't care how any browser does (well they want them all to pass of course, but they don't write the test for or against any particular browser).

  12. Microsoft is doing this all backwards on IE8 May Not Pass the Acid2 Test After All · · Score: 1

While I don't think it should have taken this long, I applaud Microsoft for finally supporting standards and passing the ACID2 test. Regardless of the proprietary tag, they've made a rendering engine that follows standards. At the same time, because they have a strong majority of the browser market, they can't all of a sudden break thousands of pages. I strongly oppose implementing new, non-standard tags; especially to make your standards-compliant site render correctly. Why does Microsoft punish the good developers? They would get a lot more respect if the owned up and said:

"We messed up, from now on we're going to create a standard compliant browser exactly to spec. We know this means a lot of sites will need to be updated, but it's in the best interest of the web development community and consumers. During the transition, you can add <some proprietary tag> to force IE8 to render in IE6 or IE7 mode."

Make the non standards developers work for it.

  19. Carmack on Is id Abandoning Linux? · · Score: 1

Carmack has always been open and honest about what he thinks about current technology, but he is a professional game developer and I have no doubt that he'll support many platforms. Like all software (inc viruses) developers target the biggest platform first. In this case, Windows. Since it's DirectX, I would guess XBox is around the corner. Past games have supported OpenGL and DirectX so I am sure Carmack has designed the engine with future support in mind.

Remember Carmack was part of the original (and probably 360) XBox advisory group. Here he says the XBox 360 is the best development platform even though the PS3 may be more powerful. http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2005/10/18/1556

I remember a few generations ago of video cards. Carmack said that ATI's new 9800 gpu is amazing but their drivers sucked so he preferred NVidia's. It doesn't mean his games weren't supported by ATI hardware.

PS- XBox was NVidia based while the XBox 360 is ATI

  20. Re:Oh boo hoo on The Morality of Web Advertisement Blocking · · Score: 1

Not exactly. When walking in to a retail store you are there to buy stuff, or at least look if there is anything you want to buy. You could compare this to browsing newegg.com; not NEEDING anything, but checking on the latest deals to see if there is anything you'd like. When I go to to my favorite webcomics or blogs, I am there for the entertainment of the site. Even if I don't buy anything, I get some entertainment value out of it and the owners do deserve some money for it. Nobody goes to the circus then leaves thinking, I didn't buy any food or souvenirs so I shouldn't of had to pay.

My only problem was with the analogy. That being said, I completely disapprove of popup, plugin installing, personal info stealing ads and have no problem blocking those. If I like the site though, I don't mind text or tastefully displayed image ads, especially if they are related to the site.

There will always be people out there that want Firefox to have x feature so give it to them, but as an extension. For that matter, make everything an extension. Mozilla should concentrate on making a really efficient browser platform with the bare minimum built in; then have all features be extensions. Don't like how bookmarks work? Use a third party one! Want more control over caching? Write it! Etc etc. I am all for having a feature rich browser, but I don't want clutter and wasted resources on features I don't use. I should be able to turn off or replace anything I want.
