Yeah, I thought of that too, but isn't it possible to install iTunes in your home directory or something like that (I don't have a mac so I wouldn't know)
Just out of curiostiy, if you give them limited rights to install certain software, then why not give them limited right to install some activeX controls (apart from the fact they're "evil"). The activeX control should only have as much rights as your user right?
HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
* Windows 98 SE, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
* Internet Explorer 5.01 (or later), which supports 128-bit encryption
* Windows Media Player 7.1 (or later), we recommend the latest version
* A 233 megahertz (MHz) processor (such as an Intel Pentium II or Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) processor) or faster
* 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM or more
* Speakers and sound capability
* Payment with a valid credit card with a U.S. billing address
* To enjoy high-quality audio as a Radio Plus subscriber, you will need Windows Media Player 9 Series (or later)

Enable cookies[...] You must be an administrator on the computer in order for the ActiveX control to install properly. You need not be an admin to use the service once the control has been installed.
(All scripting options need to be enabled too)
So why would I need to enable cookies to download music, or have administrator rights, just to visit a site...
After a quick read, I can only see that the polymer needs a lot of time to get magnetic properties, as opposed to metal. This might come in handy with hard disks, however, another usage I had in mind (Lego bricks and other children's toys) falls of the boat. Since I think this will be a little to expensive.
I might be wrong though, I'm not a rocket scientist (or polymer scientist if you want)
While the numbers are impressive, this just looks like a filter that does combined wordsearches?
Even with training, isn't this just some regexp and searchting after particular strings.
And what about short messages, that don't use as much words, is the spamscore relative or absolute? The article is a little low on details, anybody who can point to some more informative articles?
Sorry if this is a strange comparison, it was the first one that came to my mind. I just wanted to point out that it's not the (entirely) the fault of the lawyers.
And a chef might as well poison me and then regret it afterwards. but let's not go there:)
Yeah, and my chef doesn't cook to keep me alive, he just cooks for his wallet.
I agree that lawyers do some crazy stuff, but if you're interested in the law, are smart enough and you want to make a living, why not become a lawyer. It's as good as a profession as any other. It might be the patent system that's a bit strange
But at least they'll be flying relatively safe airplanes. Before, those dangerous people would build their own airplane (or something like that) and fly with it.
Now, you can at least count on the plane not to do stupid stuff, you can't change the pilot.
I'll probably get modded offtopic, but post anyway.
This oughtta be cool if you want to add a little more fun to wardriving. Easy medical tests should allow every geek to get a license like this, grab a fellow geek, and start flying around the city, just surfing the web:)
The blurb specifically mentions that more people should be buying planes now instead of creating/modding them.
However, this being slashdot, I like your idea:)
Look at the countries where the jobs are going. There's a good reason why these workers are more 'productive' than workers in developed counties... because they're getting paid slave wages while working twice the hours that we do.
While I agree, I would argue that this is a normal way of advancing economies. We've been in this situation (slave wages, people are nothing more than labour) here in Belgium too. But, as time went by, revolutions came, people stood up for their rights, unions formed, and the people became stronger.
Surpressing people and paying low wages is not a good thing, but forcing them to follow our rules isn't a good thing either (look at what happened in some African countries where we wanted to dictate our right way of doing things). We should give them a chance, let them fight for their rights (one way or another, I don't like dead people too, but I hope you can see where I'm going with this) and let them develop their own solution. Who knows, maybe a new market form might come out of all this. There are multiple solutions/approaches to a problem. Our solution is not the one (otherwise the free market economy would have stayed as it is since it's conception. And we all know it has since been adapted to the public needs et al.)
About the sweat shop thing, closing the shop might be quite an unethical way of doing things, but the shop brought welfare to the region, allowing people to get educated and collect know-how. They are schooled, so if there are only some people who would take initiative, schooled workers are already there. As opposed to people staying uneducated and not "advancing". An educated person is, to me, better of than an uneducated one.
It's not a black and white world, and there is a reason that ethics is a course thought in economics courses at the universities here in Belgium
Yes but that way, google could be blamed for being biased. If they put more weight to a right wing paper than some left-wing paper. Or they forget some obscure paper.
Or what if they index more left wing than right wing sources.
The pictures are here. Thanks to all that helped out. I will be submitting the images to SIGGRAPH 2005 and a paper. (P.S. Never post your email address on slashdot. I got 900 emails! ouch.)"
Within 2 months:
"The paper got a prize and I would like to thank everyone who participated
PS: Never post pictures of photo's on slashdot, my webserver is nothing but photons now"
Well if I'm correct then you don't need a key anymore now to decss, so I don't think leaving that key in the open was really necesarry, it just gave the circumventionprocess a (little) boost.
While this might be a good idea, I don't totally agree.
If you were to get to know people then you would really want to know more about them who, what, where, when, why and how.
When you want to "know" your data (searching in every possible way) you might want to know more stuff about it. That's why the xml syntax used is so extensible.
But since this is slashdot, getting to know people might be a bad analogy.

I think they mean bugs with features. Cheers, Bert
I think you mean Mozilla Thunderbird?

If it's smaller and lighter, it still surves a purpose, albeit in another sense than that of iPod killer
That said, I think the slow transfer rate could really get people annoyed with the device, leading to bad mouth to mouth advertisement

That's why I run emacs on my cellphone :D
Or what if they index more left wing than right wing sources.
This ain't as easy as it would seem, imho
He's right, we all know 64K ought to be enough for anybody. How dare you challenge Bill G.!!
A beofwulf cluster of these...
I think you need a hug ma'te
Well, the server might burn with such a high heat that there's nothing left but protons, anywayz, it was a joke, but you got me there :D

That'd better start searching ;) for a fix then. Or patch, or ...
