Seriouisly though, I lived in New Orleans for 4 years (91-95) and it didn't really hit me as a tech receptive culture, though there's a party every night (that no one got the note to clean up after) and avg 100% Humidity. An excellent place to party, not so much to live.
I started off building internal apps with full knowledge that I had some control over what browser they were going to be used with, but over time sibling aplications extended to the outside world and I didn't code down to standards. That was my mistake. I don't think any browser should be criticized for it's extra features (which is different from deviating from standards *cough* IE *cough*)
The responsibility of universally accessible web based applications lies with the developer, not the tools (s)he uses.
No. Teach mom how to harden her computer, and how to maintain it. If she can't do that, she has no business using the Internet.
Nice thought, but you obviously haven't been in this situation. I once made the mistake of building my parents a system and realized the HELL that is tech support x100.
Will you also teach her to ignore the fear of new and different things? Will you teach her that it's okay to make mistakes and "break" things as long as she learns?
Been there, tried that, still haven't fully recovered.
Half-Life 2 was used as an example of a content provider managing distriution of their own product, not of something available on bittorent.
The only way I will be buying/playing HL2 is through Steam. I have a method of supporting Valve I believe is fair, so I will.
But this has little to do with right and wrong and much more to do with balance of power. Those with money and infrastructure (MPAA is only an example) will do everything in their power to maintain control over profitable media. Are content producers being hurt by torrents? Marginally. I think a balance will be struck in the distant future where content providers and consumers interact directly, with publishers taking diminished (not eliminated) role. Half-Life 2 is an early example.
Abuses will diminish when the proper channels are available.
The lone coder died of neglect because (s)he wasn't appreciated, encouraged, kept trained, kept excited. The lone coder, drunk on his/her own absolute power over the life, death, and shape of his/her projects failed to see that no one was even paying attention and that once the hard work was done, there would be no one to really see what went into what (s)he build because by the nature of a good project the final product makes the process looks effortless.
I'm a Lone Coder and I'm Dead Inside.

Better look away from any orgs auditing SOX audits, that'll Really piss you off.
Seriously, I respect your right to your opinion and if you get enough people together, it could be criminal (if it isn't already). But then people like me that take advantage of the opportunity to advance at an accelerated rate would be legally cut off. It's my opinion that that is unfair. Althoug in no way insurmountable.
I work for myself while working for someone else. I learn and grow on someone else's dollar, while providing productivity (not counting posts like this) that turns the company a profit. I work for my educaton. When I choose, the library is open 24 hours a day. If a company were to "require" 80 hours a week, I could leave. If I don't want the job, there's someone that will and I'm okay with that (as long as they know it's their choice).
So what is up with this? Why is it that thousands of intelligent and motivated professionals are allowing themselves to be exploited and treated so poorly?
I think everything is happening (in reaction to the situation/environment) as it should. There are people who can deal with the environment and those that can't. Every company I've worked for has as a salaried employee has taken advantage of unpaid overtime, because I allowed them to (I was having fun). When I no longer enjoyed the enviromnment I left. At will employment.
I don't think that means that employees can't or shouldn't complain, but painting EA (for example) as a villan degrades their argument to whining. By making practices public knowledge, there's a better chance that EA and companies like it will consider change, unless they have an endless stream of potential employees ready to deal with the status quo.
Moore pointed out the dominant position achieved by Nintendo in handheld gaming devices and said Sony's decision to enter the space would be "like developing your own little operating system and saying, 'Well, I'm going to challenge Windows.' "
Nintendo better work to maintain what they've built instead of resting on their laurels, lest they give away the top spot, all while arrogantly berating the competition...
What kind of Evil Genius can survive without a Harem O' Hos?!? Where's he suposed to get his inspiration for World Domination? Automatic -5 to whatever rating it's given. Even GTA knew the importance of hos...

Sounds like an excellent motorcycle tire to me ^_^

I had a Packard Bell in college
...that I have immediate flashes of this game

Don't blame the browser, blame the coder.

Is Microsoft's Single Sign-On vision edging towards oblivion?
It's been dead for a while, people are still cleaning up the carcus.

I LOVE this man!
I respect Ben Browder as an actor and I Loved the show, but to say I love him is a bit more than I can muster...
I LOVE Claudia Black! I mean, I also respect Claudia Black as... nah I F***in LOVE Claudia Black!
I didn't watch Pitch Black until right before the CoR because I heard her character didn't fare well...

By posting a link (thanks) to it do you not hasten it's demise?
Yup, only a matter of time.

When urge and wallet/budget can reach mutual satisfaction, purchases should be made.

Is it just me or are there enough high profile distros available now to keep them all pushing a little harder to stay current. I like it.

I think it's important that we use words in a manner consistant with their meaning
I agree and appreciate your insight.
Fine. Then google has to change their motto from don't be evil to "dont be relatively evil."
I'd vote for that change ^_^
Thanks for the link. I'll be digging into that for a while.
even though I think they only have to last until MS comes out with Longhorn
ROFLMAO Sweet, then they're as good as dead.
I'd do it in a second, for free (the first time ;)
