If a computer connected to the web one day, was then disconnected from the web and had a website in its cache, would that somehow be DMCA violations because the cache'd website was taken down by the owner.
From the Ars article, it would seem that one of the arguments from Healthcare Advocates was that looking at a cached version of an out-dated website was a violation of the DMCA.
That's just crazy.

I have this guilty pleasure watching this show. I don't really know why.
and Cheaters is just another guilty pleasure. The episode where the dude confronts his girlfriend/wife and his best friend (who she'd been fucking) as they came out of the Planned Parenthood was just priceless. She lost the baby too. Fucking Hilarious!
We can put it into alarm clocks too! then we won't be able to blame a power outage for oversleeping and skipping work. "No sir, I hadn't thought about putting my alarm clock on an UPS system."
I am looking forward to the PS3, but the Cell processor has another major problem in terms of being a gen-purpose chip.
IBM slashed the powerpc design and removed double precision from the cell. That may be fine for games and such, but for heavy duty computing, that is a huge limitation for the cell going beyond a 'dumb' component processor.
The Justice Department has proposed a mandatory labeling system for sites bearing sexually explicit content and higher penalties for Internet service providers that don't report child pornography on their networks to the appropriate authorities.
but we oppose the.XXX top-level domain.... how convenient.
Starr Long is a really interesting personality. I spoke with him at length about MMOs, specifically about instancing design ideas.
The site with the interview is down, else I'd link to it.
One thing that we talked about, I think I brought it up was the fact that there are 1000s of players playing counter-strike every day, for hours on end. Why would such a repetitive game have such a huge playerbase, if the repetitive actions in MMOs are a turn-off.
The resulting conversation focused on the player, and their sense of accomplishment personally, not necessarily their character's accomplishments. Being able to aim and shoot faster, being able to learn the maps intuitively increase the players capabilities, even though the characters don't really change.
I mentioned that there were already mods out for CS that incorporate the Warcraft character archtypes (this was pre-WOW), and that independent servers hosting the game would track a player's avatar, award XP, award skills, etc. This seemed to be interesting news to them.
It was soon after that I heard about the huge reboot of the TR process.
If you're a student and want to learn how to program, don't use VB. That's about the only statement that I'll make that is negative towards VB.
I had to do a whole bunch of coding in VB6 and VBA for companies that I worked for. Companies that didn't have additional programmer resources to work on these needs. VBA and VB6 are nearly identical and they are horrible horrible languages to learn programming in, because of the bad habits you take for granted.
However, now that I've made the jump to VB.NET 2005, I just don't see those bad habits still being present.
There is no more of the non-declared variables, which is one of the biggest ones. There's a vastly improved warning/error system. It's just quite a bit better.
I learned Pascal, I learned Fortran-77, command-line old-school can i get a woop woop, so maybe I had already had some proper programming fundamentals in me when I took up the task for VB coding 9+ years later.
As a worker, if you're tasked to do something that requires programming, and you're relatively intelligent and computer savvy, but don't know any programming language, VB.NET 2005 is probably going to be the easiest, best first step, to at least get a mock-up/prototype program completed. All without having to take any classes at your local university extension.
What I don't understand is how the government can make a distinction between hand-copying and other forms of copying.
What if I have a hand-held scanner (as was posted the other day on/. and have existed for years)? Is that hand-copying? What if I use a whole candy-machine full of silly puddy? Can I use carbon paper too?
I mean I realize that the government can legislatively make a distinction between a 3lb carrot and a 5lb carrot, but do they think they are being clever with this? Is this security through frustration/writers-cramp? Is there some time limit placed on the copier?
Does the government employ 1000s of workers to hand-compile the list initially?
The matter of time has been over a decade. It's not like the AMD HQ and fabs haven't been located in Austin. Dell just has a pole up his ass about Intel's sweetened processor price deal
Slashdot, in a move heralded by the sounding of trumpets has decided that along with more cowbell, many of their headlines must include the phrase "sets their* sights"
"their" will be replaced by the appropriate descriptive pronoun
I'm surprised to see that episode mentioned in the interview. I don't claim to know all that goes on behind the scenes at Discovery channel, but in all the reruns of episodes (is anyone tired of the Son of a Gun myth yet?) I almost never see the poppyseed bagel episode.
I'd bet that showing potential drug-abusers a valid method of obfuscating the results of a drug screening got some uppity types angry, and we'll likely (almost) never see that episode again.
The "you can't beat the breathalizer" episode gets shown alot too, but the poppy seed bagel one is never re-aired.
also F Kari, and give me more Scottie!
I am not involved with the research, but I read a report about the submission in Science and this issue of duplicated photos of the cell colonies a few weeks ago. The issue was that Science had asked for better high-res photos at the last minute and a mistake was made on what got sent to them.
They (Science) had already had the submission paper with lower res photos that were (supposedly) clearly different from each other. So while the version of the paper that was printed in Science clearly had duplicate photos representing different colonies, the original version of the paper/photos that Science had was not that way.
I think this is just more sensationalizm to further smear an already hurting scientist.
I've been using MetrO since 2000 and it was the most amazing tool when I was backpacking Europe in 2001.
If you have a palm device or a smart phone and you travel alot you should definitely check this software out!
I'm waiting for that awesome looking Jumprope controller. I mean shit you don't even see the TeeVee or the XBOX or anything. That wireless jumprope must be like WiMAX or some shit.
JumpJack Revolution Extreme!!!
I've seen good pranks, but the arrogance of the dude (in his writings on his blogsite) just makes this not as funny.
I should have known when there was early mention of things posted on to Livejournhell

maybe we shouldn't put them into alarm clocks.

How can you replace a tired old DVR with another tired old DVR?
I just received my new 40gb PVR-700 and now I can go anywhere and have DVR functions.
I can copy the files I DVR onto my hard drive via the USB cable and do all my editing there.
I can bring my PVR to my friend's house and show off the cool ass viral video I downloaded.
I can plug it into my video card's s-video output and use it to record those hard to convert MKV and other wrapper video files.
You wanna get un-tired, you should check this device out.
sorry to be so fucking commercial about it, but seriously, it rocks.

so you can blame me if it sucks
p.s. his office is too fucking cool

The energy must come from locomotion! http://www.true-ringtone.co.uk/locomotion-kylie-mi nogue-ringtone-40827.htm
The editors converted it from British Emails into American e-mails. Thus 5 million becomes 3 million.
Oh wait that's still backwards. *shakes fist* damn editors!
But i've learned to prefer the 'from behind' view
Ok so maybe I don't know how to spell her name, but that Scottie on Mythbusters is hot.
Like Greek goddess hot.
If she was on the boat, it would have caught fire. Causing all of her clothing to be burned off.
Leaving her naked, tattooed goddess body bare to all, blinding the eyes of the MIT students who have no conception of what she could be.
I want to see more Myths about Scottie not being my one day loverslave.

sorry. I don't know what came over me there.
