Back in college between 1994-1998 my MUD of choice was Kingdoms http://www.kingdoms.se/. But, what really held my interest was programming TinyFugue http://tinyfugue.sourceforge.net/. I had macros and autoresponders for everything. No one could touch me without some good autoretribution. I even created some remote controllable semi-AI bots such as Locutus of Borg who went around trying to assimilate people and one linked to an outside lisa/eliza type program that just went around chatting with people just to watch the hilarious conversations:-)
You wield the Annihilator.
Annihilator says: Let's kick some butt!
I second this comment. I love my Sager NP2090 and even though it is almost a year old it would kick all of the budget laptops and keep up with most of the performance ones in this review.
I just finished my first play through of Supreme Commander at 1680x1050 and it never had a hiccup whereas it was sputtering all over the place on my fiance's new Dell Studio 15 at 1440x900.
I have been reading lots of things about Spore and SecuROM and yes, I agree DRM is evil and only 3 activations sucks, but I want more technical information. What does the version of SecuROM in Spore REALLY do to your computer? Does it leave a continuously running process or service? How much CPU does it use? How much RAM does it use? Does it affect other DVD burning or copying in any way? What other definite technical information about the SecuROM in Spore can the/. community provide other than just anti-DRM messages and hear-say?
Yes, I love my ABIT IC7-MAX3. Still my main desktop computer at home, although I primarily use my laptop for most things these days, it still makes a great file and print server. Plus, it's got a lot of funky lights: http://bis.midco.net/black/
Somebody mod this up. Never have points when I need them. SL is full of awesome possibilities (and yes, there are some freaks as well). The point is that you will find what you are looking for there. If you go looking for freaks you will find them. But, if you really go to explore the creative potential that SL offers you will find that as well. There are some beautiful builds, inventive AI, and lots of fun scripting/building possibilities available in SL.
I have a very similar chair that I purchased from Office Depot over 5 years ago for $199 and I love it. It is still in great shape. It is all black with a padded fabric seat and a mesh high back with a head rest and lumbar support. I found one fairly close online, but the price is currently a bit higher at 372.60. The Alera Eon Series: http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/529506/Eon-Series-Fabric-Chair-53-x/
I decided early on I wanted at 1680x1050 display on my new 15.4" laptop to resolution match my 22" 1680x1050 that I use for work. I looked at Dells and other big brands, but I ended up getting a Sager NP2092 with a 1680x1050 screen that they only offer in matte and I love it. With such high resolution on only a 15.4" screen it is just beautiful, "liquid" was the first word that popped into my mind when I seen it.
You can check it out here http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np2092-custom-laptop-built-compal-jfl92-p-2347.html.
My 5.1 sound card has 3 1/8" stereo output jacks. These are usually used for Front L & R, Rear L & R, Center & Sub. So, if the Center & Sub channels can be soft hacked to produce a 3rd stereo channel, I think it would be very possible hardware wise. And, all 6 channels are rated at 108dB at 2V according to the specs, so there output should be about the same.
I was not calling LAME crappy, particularly the current VBR implementations. The key phrase was "at that time". And, at that time, Fraunhofer was better.
My first "Video Game" was the "RCA Studio II". Has ANYONE else ever heard of it? It came out in 1977. It had the same black and white blocky graphics as Pong, but it had 5 built in games and a cartridge slot. It had 2 numerical keypads for controls that could be used for both number based games and as directional arrows. I spent hours playing bowling, racing, or drawing complicated pictures that could not be saved, lol. Then, finally, I found some carts for it at a rummage sale that included an early 1 or 2 player Spacewar type game. Think I played the thing until I wore out the keypads.
I have an SL Avatar, and I know several other people who do as well. All of us are 30+, married, and have 1st Lives. It is a fun place to explore and create things. I am a Linux sysadmin and Java programmer and I enjoy applying my skills in SL for fun and a little profit (made about $800 so far with 0 investment). I do not like to call it a game myself. I think of it more like a 3D web browser with thousands of things you can do inside of it.
I have also heard of this game called World Of Warcraft, but have never actually met anyone who plays it. So, by your logic, I guess it is not very popular either.
I still have never seen a definitive answer to the AAC vs. MP3 debate other than that, for me, my 5 "Digital Audio Players" all play mp3's and none play AAC. AAC may be a better format, but is it in Apple's implementation in iTunes? I know you can pay more for higher bitrate songs now, but when iTunes first opened I went out and bought 20 songs. Just out of curiosity I bought a few I already owned on CD. I then burned them to a CD and ripped them back as WAVs. Then, I ripped the songs off of my CDs and encoded them to MP3 at 128kb with a good Fraunhofer MP3 encoder (not LAME or MusicMatch or some of the other crappy encoders most people used at that time, there is a big difference), and then converted them back to WAVs. And, to be honest, I couldn't really hear any difference. So, I played both WAVs (from AAC and MP3) through a spectrum analyzer, and the visual difference was obvious. The Apple AAC sourced WAVs were extremely clipped on the high end compared to the ones from the MP3s that I had encoded. Therefore, I have never bothered to try iTunes again. Things may be better now, but with all of the DRM free MP3 stores popping up, I will be going to them first.
Punching no, but a former coworker of mine did take a good chip out of the center of the 17" monitor I was given when I started working here by jabbing it with a ballpoint pen!
But, the difference is that you can turn Lindens back into real money. Through making and selling things in game I have earned about $800 real US dollars worth of Lindens while never investing a single dime into the game. If any of that money had disappeared before I transferred it out I would be pretty P.O.ed. Therefore, I think I should reasonably be able to expect the same security I would expect from an online bank.
For whatever reason (unslashdoting perhaps) the actual link is one off from the link in the story.
Here is http://www.robotworldnews.com/100195.htm the working link.
I have both OOO and Word 2003 mainly for compatibility. I pretty much save everything in plain old txt or html. At least I thought I was compatible with anything until I got a.docx file emailed to our whole charity organization that I belong to and Word 2003 couldn't open it, 2003 isn't THAT old. So, I searched around a bit and found the free MS docx converters for Word 2003, as well as a dozen sites offering to convert docx to doc for a price. Doc was bad enough, but at least it has become a standard. Why the heck did they need to come up with another dumb format that isn't even compatible with their previous version without a special download that you have to go hunting for?
So, after all of that I replied to the person who sent it to me and told her she should at least save in.doc format because most people don't have Word 2007 yet. She replied back that she was sorry and that she only had Word 2007. I was going to go into how to save to other formats, but I decided it wasn't worth the effort.
Speaking as one who has played the Battletech boardgame and all of the Mechwarrior videogames as well as read many of the books in the series I have been wating for this franchise to be made into a movie for years. There is ample source material, lots of cool robots, and some very good story lines. I think it could make some great movies if handled right.
My variation on the same:

More like one of my favorite books "The World Inside".

My favorite laptop seller still offers XP as a standard option on some of its laptops. Granted I haven't tried to purchase one since the deadline, but the option to do so is still there:

FYI: both of my 15.4" laptops, an ASUS and a Sager, have grounded plugs on their power supplies. I thought that was more the rule than the exception.
